Breaking News...Health Canada Extends Sunscreen Pilot!
On December 21, Health Canada released
DEL Bulletin LEPP No. 18
informing stakeholders of upcoming changes to the one-year sunscreen pilot. The Sunscreen Pilot was implemented in February 2017 and due to expire on February 27, 2018. The Pilot provides the opportunity for companies importing sunscreens from the U.S. to apply modified options for identification testing in Canada of finished sunscreen products. CA Holds Annual Fall Bi-lateral Meeting with Health Canada
Cosmetics Alliance was in Ottawa on December 14th for our industry's annual fall bi-lateral meeting with Health Canada. CA received a presentation on the most updated thinking on the self-care framework and had further opportunity to offer our industry's views on this important reform. We again stressed the importance that any legislative changes that are required be made before the next federal election. Other items discussed included cost recovery and extending and expanding the Sunscreen Pilot, and other regulatory issues important to our industry. A direct outcome of this meeting was Health Canada’s announcement on December 21st of the extension of the Sunscreen Pilot.

, CA hosted an Executive Briefing on the NAFTA negotiations currently underway that included presentations from Jeff Weiss, a trade lawyer based in Washington, D.C.; Dennis Darby, President and CEO of Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters and Chair of the Canadian Manufacturing Coalition; and Bob Carberry, 37 year veteran of the Canadian public service including former Assistant Secretary at the Privy Council with a key role in developing the Regulatory Cooperation Council with the U.S. These three expert panelists offered their respective insights

Annual Fall Board Meeting
CA's Board of Directors held their annual fall meeting on Nov. 10 in conjunction with the Foundation's 2017 Mirror Ball. The Board reviewed and approved CA's 2018 annual operating plan and budget. Highlights of the plan include a balanced operational budget and continuing to protect and enhance the ability of members to do business by advancing our industry's interests on such issues as Health Canada's Self-Care Framework and NAFTA negotiations among many.
Board Chair Steve Blanchet welcomed new member Eric Douilhet, GM of the Estee Lauder Companies Canada, while extending a big "thank you" to Vice Chair Nadia Petrolito of L'Oreal who has stepped down from the CA Board as part of a reorganization of association responsibilities within her company. Nadia will be continuing as a member of the Foundation's Board.

More than $1 Million Raised for Women with Cancer
Members from Canada's beauty industry and beyond gathered at the Westin Harbour Castle Hotel on Nov. 10 to raise an impressive $1 million in support of Canadian women and teens with cancer.
The money was raised at the 26
th Mirror Ball in support of Look Good Feel Better, Canada’s only charity helping women and teens manage the appearance-related effects of cancer and its treatment. These crucial funds will help provide hundreds of Look Good Feel Better workshops across the country.
Look Good Feel Better is forever grateful to its Mirror Ball sponsors, donors, guests and volunteers for their commitment to helping Canadian women with cancer feel like themselves again.

2017 COSA Awards a Big Hit!
The 2017 COSA Awards held last November was another incredible success. Over 450 beauty industry players attended the Gala event in Toronto where 19 COSA Award winners received their award. For those that missed the event, it can still be viewed on Cosmetics website.

Cosmetics Alliance Outreach
Never missing an opportunity to advance the issues important to our industry, or to build relationships with influencers and decision-makers, CA has been proactively engaging with a variety of stakeholders as well as member companies. Here are just a few highlights!

CA President Darren Praznik was a guest at the Liberal Christmas Party in Ottawa. Prime Minister Trudeau and his spouse Sophie Gregoire address the large crowd in attendance.

CA was invited to join in a Canada 2020 session with U.S. political author and commentator John Heliemann who offered insights into the Trump administration and what to expect in U.S. politics in 2018.

Cosmetics Alliance's Myles Robinson and Darren Praznik share a moment with Ontario Finance Minister Charles Sousa at the Minister's address to the Mississauga Board of Trade. The importance of NAFTA was an important topic of discussion.

Darren joined fellow CEO's from the alliance of consumer products associations to meet with Treasury Board Minister Scott Brison in Ottawa. The group called for improvements in the regulatory development process (which Brison oversees) and raised concerns with the lack of transparency and accountability with Health Canada's new cost recovery initiative.

Darren was in on Ottawa in December to meet with the new Health Minister's staff in advance of a planned meeting with the Minister early in the new year. Items discussed included the Self-Care Framework, renewal and expansion of the Sunscreen Pilot, NAFTA negotiations and HC's calculations on cost-recovery.

Darren and his partner Marti Pehar attended the UAE reception hosted by the UAE Consel-General in Toronto. Here they chat with Don Valley West MP Rob Oliphant who represented the Federal Government. The UAE is a destination for many Canadian-manufactured cosmetics and CA works closely with their Consulate on export certificates.

Myles and Darren attended a lunch with new Conservative Party Leader Andrew Scheer on January in Mississauga. Scheer, who was hosted by the local Board of Trade, was in Mississauga to discuss his vision for the Canadian economy and briefly touch on some of the issues of the day.

New Service...Translating English Certificates into Spanish
We are pleased to announce that Cosmetics Alliance now offers the additional service of translating your English Certificates into Spanish by a certified Spanish translator. The fee for this service is $175 and your certificate will be translated, certified and notarized.

Passing of Ray Patrick
It is with great sadness that we share with you the news that Ray Patrick, former General Manager of Mary Kay Cosmetics Ltd., passed away January 10
th after a lengthy illness.
Ray was an active and well respected member of our industry, and beloved by his fellow employees and sales associates who worked with him for 34 years at Mary Kay.

LGFB Workshop Addition: Breast Care & Cancer Treatment
Look Good Feel Better surveyed women with cancer and found that more than 60% weren’t recommended or aware of appropriate bras and garments for post-surgery, treatment, or recovery.
LGFB wants to change this with its new workshop addition, Breast Care & Cancer Treatment, being launched in select workshops across the GTA. It’s open to all women, facing all cancers to provide education and resources on every day bra essentials during treatment and recovery, while also providing detailed information for women with breast cancer.

Membership Recruitment Breakfast - Montreal Jan 23rd
CA President Darren Praznik was invited by PME-Montréal to give a breakfast presentation about our industry and Cosmetics Alliance Canada on January 23rd. In addition to discussing the work of CA Canada, Darren will also be providing an overview of Health Canada’s Self-Care Framework and the opportunities it can bring to our industry, as well as an update on the NAFTA negotiations and its implications.
Darren will also be in Montreal that week for meetings with member companies and to attend the
Montreal round of the NAFTA negotiations which run from January 24-28

The Canadian Beauty Awards nomination forms are out now and are due back Friday, January 19. This year’s awards feature new categories in makeup, skincare, body care, sun care, haircare and men’s products. This year’s awards will be held on May 17 at the Carlu Event Theatre in Toronto. Make sure your nominations are returned by January 19 and good luck to all the nominees!
