"It is with great love and joy that we welcome a new member to our community, Rylan Audrey Lawson. Rylan was born earlier this week to parents, Elizabeth and Justin Lawson. She joins her older siblings, Celia in Sweet Pea Nursery and Holden in Friday's older Morning Glory class. Please join me in saying 'Congratulations to the whole family and welcome sweet Rylan! "

May Day
Dear Community,
Spring is in the air, this winter gave us bountiful buckets of rain so the earth is rejoicing in flowers and greens in all shades. In lieu of our beloved Spring Celebration/ May Day, please send a little photo or video of something that is growing in your home, your yard, or your inner world (that one you might have to write about instead of a photo). OR.....send something related to spring that you have been assigned by one of your teachers like a haiku about an acorn or a pea sprout. OR....share the ways in which you celebrate spring. Remember our offerings last year ranging from Mexico to India?

Send us these submissions by next Friday, May 8th so that we may enjoy what you share with wreaths atop our heads, lemonade in our glasses and love in our hearts for our incredible community!

Please send submissions to varnnold@waldorfsandiego.org

"The Waldorf curriculum is fundamentally an artistic curriculum. It seeks to engage the developing child as his or her capacities for thinking, feeling and creating unfold. Teachers strive to imbue the rich and varied curriculum, which addresses these predictable stages of child development, with art and music, movement, and a true connection to what it means to be a human being living responsibly and actively on the earth."

~ Marcia Seymour, Eugene Waldorf School
Recreate a masterpiece Getty Museum challenge!
Family fun opportunity! This is not an assignment. It is an opportunity to have fun, get creative and enjoy art! Valter in Grade 7 already completed his!!

Do you have any art books at home of famous paintings or sculptures? If not, you can look up paintings and sculptures from your favorite artists. If you need suggestions try looking up "artwork by"... Monet, Manet, Matisse, Van Gogh Degas, Kahlo, Picasso, Cassat, Rivera, Cheri Samba, the choices are many!

Following the guidelines and the suggestions from the Getty Museum link (guidelines located at the bottom of the article), using only what you have around the house, recreate an art masterpiece and take a photo to upload. Please upload a photo of the original piece, and the artist's name, also. You may use family members and pets too! Have fun getting creative.

Send your works to varnold@waldorfsandiego.org, we will feature some in next months newsletter and on our social media pages!

Our friend Raphe (EC) has been enjoying time outdoors!

April showers bring May flowers, cucumbers, tomatoes, beans, corn, peppers...

Waldorf Education values environmental education and gardening.

Rudolf Steiner felt that "garden work should be an obligatory addition to the lessons.”
We checked in with Ms Soco to see what she's been up to at home.

Well, the answer is A LOT! She's an inspiration to us all.

  • Infusing oils with flowers and plants to make salves
  • Crocheting mittens
  • Farming - Preparing soil, composting and planting rare varieties of corn, beans and tomatoes
  • Infusing vinegar with citrus peels to make house cleaner
  • Building a table with reclaimed wood we found on a sidewalk
  • Making cards and origami to send to my students

"Things we stopped doing: Watching news."
We want to hear from you!!
Our "balm" for these times lies in our personal connections and our community. We are all exploring ways to stay connected with those outside of our inner "within the home" circle, while we are looking at ways to create a more harmonious existence within our constant inner circle!

We invite you to find ways to bring laughter and joy into your weeks and days.  Suggestions include: sharing puns and "knock-knock" jokes; having a weekly family "talent show";and sharing your talent show with neighbors (they at their doorstep - you at the sidewalk or driveway). Be sure to share your ideas for bringing joy and laughter into your days by "tagging" us @waldorfsandiego and #beyondtheclassroomwssd.
Social "Snacks"... from the Social Health Group

On April 16th, Jewel (the singer/songwriter) hosted an online event called "Live from San Quarantine". Her guests were Brad Paisley (country music artist) and Kim John Payne (author of Simplicity Parenting and our school's social health "mentor"). We encourage you to craft some time to listen to the wisdom and music shared. The recordings can be found on Kim's website:  www.simplicityparenting.com . You will discover great words of wisdom that feed the soul - as a person and as a parent, regardless of the age of your children.

As Kim John Payne shares, during this time it is our relationships that are most important - and academics are second. When we are past this time, and as we reflect and look back, what is the picture that we want to remember of this time? Before the industrial revolution, families spent most of their days together; the advent of factories and more urban lifestyles created a separation between parents and their children. As with any "advance" or new unfolding, there is something lost. Perhaps this is a time that we can reconnect within our families; (re)establish our own family values and recognize, in the words of Jewel, "that we were made for this". Just breathe...

Peace and Warmth to All,
The Social Health Group
WSSD High School Math teacher, Mr Johnson (originally from Iowa), shared this link for the Eagle Sky Cam in Decorah, IA.

"This bald eagle nest is located near a trout hatchery in Decorah, Iowa. After two of this pair's nests were destroyed, the Raptor Resource Project team began constructing this nest with the hopes that the eagles would take it over and build upon it--and they have! Watch as they come back each year to raise another brood."

Part II: Book Recommendations for Young Children from Julie Joinson and Milan Joinson-Szekerka
When Milan was young we loved to cuddle up and read books together, and we found particular delight in books with really fun use of language. Stories that rhymed, stories with invented languages, or words that were just plain fun to say out loud.....crickelly, crackelly, snippelly, snappelly.....you get the idea. We also loved books with engaging illustrations, and revisited books from my own childhood. Here are a few of our favorites....Part II....

News from the Snake & Lily!
Greetings from us to you! The good news is that the small crew that has been doing the restoration work at the school is moving along and repairs should be completed soon. The unknown is that we are still not sure when the store will be fully "refurbished". We will be keeping the community posted and will let you know when we are back in our space. Although, initially, it will likely not be "business as usual", we will come up with a plan of serving that is in keeping with the current guidelines from our school leadership and the local and statewide requirements.

As we mentioned in the previous newsletter, we do have access to some of our backstock. If there is an item, especially school or art supplies that you need, feel free to reach out to us. We can be reached at 619-280-8016 x202 or at snakeandlily@waldorfsandiego.org.

We are looking to the future with great anticipation!
