GREETINGS FROM THE BHS WOLVERINE GUARD CHAIRS

We hope that all BHS families are staying well and safe!

We are happy to report that 82 BHS students have earned Wolverine Guard for 2019-2020!

For those who aren't aware, Wolverine Guard (WG) is a Bellevue High PTSA sponsored award that recognizes students who perform 100+ hours of community service in the 12-month period from May 1st to April 30th. Due to the restrictions imposed by Covid-19, this year the necessary number of hours needed to earn WG was reduced to 80. In general, WG recognizes community service as the giving of time, talents, energy and/or expertise without compensation to benefit at least one other unrelated person.

This year's 80 WG recipients performed a total of 8429.8 hours of community service for the year. That is an impressive number!

Additionally, we especially want to recognize the six seniors who have completed Wolverine Guard for all four years of high school! They are noted below.

Thank you to all who participated in WG for 2019-20. You have each given back to the community in significant ways and have helped to make the world a better place! We appreciate your service and your example!

Best regards,

Ady Chan and Annie Roth
BHS WG co-chairs 2019-2020

PS Wolverine Guard recipients, in recognition of your accomplishment, you will be receiving a printed certificate. Bellevue School District needs to reopen in order for printing of the certificates to occur. We will make arrangements for underclassmen to pick up your certificates at BHS in the fall once school re-opens. For current seniors, we will mail (as in via the US Postal Service) your certificates to you once they are ready. Seniors, please help us to prepare for this by sending us your mailing address at [email protected]. Thank you!

2019-2020 YEAR BOOK DELAYED TO SEPTEMBER 2020
DON'T BE LEFT OUT

Hello BHS Students and Staff.

I would like to update you on the status of the 2019-2020 yearbook.

With respect to the delivery of the yearbook: Due to Covid 19 and all the associated restrictions the yearbook will not be delivered to BHS until September 2020. The delay is beyond our control and mainly due to the limit capacity of the manufacturing facility that produces our yearbook.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the entire Beacon Staff for their dedication and efforts during this challenging time. It has been a pleasure to work with such an amazing group of students.

I will update you as the situation becomes more clear but at this time expect the 2019-2020 yearbook in September 2020.

Thank you and stay safe BHS.

SPRING FOR SCHOOLS LUNCHEON RESULTS

I am proud to announce that our Spring for Schools campaign has raised $870,000 on a goal of $875,000. When we canceled our event, we never dreamed this goal would be in reach. We at the Foundation are humbled by the efforts of our volunteers and donors. Bellevue has faced a barrage of challenges in these past weeks and months, and remained steadfast. We are proud to serve this community and this District. Thank you.

Where Donations are Going
Our Board voted in April to allow the District the flexibility to use funding to support students most impacted by COVID. Here are some of the areas where funds have been directed:

In partnership with Bellevue LifeSpring, we are continuing to buy food for needy students. BSD has provided over 68,000 meals to students in need since the crisis began. The need was for 4,600 meals the first week. The District provided 14,600 meals two weeks ago. Demand continues to grow.
Redirected funds continue to support childcare at Stevenson. We are supporting the care of 66 children of first responders, health care workers, essential workers, and students experiencing homelessness.
The District is monitoring student well-being with a survey approximately every three weeks. Counselors funded in part by the Foundation are providing help for students at the secondary level. 131 students have been identified for assistance since March, including 58 new students.
BSD has now distributed over 442 hotspots. The Foundation is helping to cover the $30 monthly cost for these.
The K-5 Computer Science (CS) Specialists, funded in part by BSF, are providing weekly computer science activities by grade level that can be accessed by any BSD elementary student. The CS Specialist team is also developing a series of training videos so that the teachers providing care for the 66 children mentioned above can learn how to provide CS activities for the students in the program.

Your efforts to help us publicize our campaign made this possible. Thank you again for all of your support. Stay safe and healthy!

Thank you,

Carmen Brenner

SENIOR SHOUT OUTS

Comments and thoughts shared by Head Coach Nick Welton and his staff

Nate Podolsky - BHS Boys Lacrosse

Every team we face has a game plan for 2020 Team Captain, Nate Podolsky. If they don't, Nate is good for at least a hat-trick. If they do, Nate is good for at least a hat-trick... you get the point. He has a cannon. He rips a frozen rope! And if that isn't enough, clearing defenseman turn the ball over in an attempt to avoid hitting the Podolsky brick wall. When he hits someone, ooph, you can hear the wind desert their lungs. The offensive stats speak for themselves, he led the 2019 Bellevue team in goals scored. But what is most remarkable about Nate is his level of lacrosse self-efficacy. He has internalized a fiery passion for the game and has developed an incredible capacity for adversity and hard work. He's battled through injury. Every step of his journey, he's battled for the team: the culture and each individual. In the final moments, Nate always wants the ball and will pick corners above, below, and around, might even attempt to shoot through, anyone in front of him. Nate, you're one of the guys who will go on to play lacrosse next year and we are excited to watch that next journey. We are so proud of the way you have kept your head up and pushed through any obstacle thrown in your way. Your capacity to overcome will undoubtedly prove invaluable as you grow into your next team leadership position. YEE!

Conor Quinlan - BHS Boys Lacrosse

While he's quiet on the field, his play is anything but understated. Conor is a true take-away defender with one of the best wrap checks that Bellevue has seen since Jack Albrecht ( Fortunately Conor's foot positioning is better than Jack's, so we didn't have to see so many trail checks). In one-on-one matchups, there are very few times that anyone would get the best of Conor. A tough player, Conor has steadily improved each year, contributing to his teams as a long pole, but also taking faceoffs and running midfield. Each year Conor has continued to step up his game. While we are happy that we have another Quinlan still in the Bellevue Lax Family, we will certainly miss Conor in the years to come. Conor, keep that competitive edge sharp and keep pursuing your passions. We know you will be great at whatever you set your mind to!

Alex Reid - BHS Boys Lacrosse

When Alex steps on the field, we know he is going to give anyone out there a run for their money, on offense OR defense. As one of the best athletes on the field, we've asked a lot of him throughout any given season. One of his best game performances of 2019 came from him picking up a long pole for the week. His sneaky left hand has been responsible for some highlight goals against some of the best teams in the country. Not to mention, he's made of steel! Even point blank shots can't keep him down for long! Alex is the classic example of actions speak louder than words. He isn't out on the field running his mouth, he's out there doing work. Alex, you've been great to coach. Stay coachable in all that you do, even when you reach the highest levels of performance (as we know you will). The sky is the limit for you!

2020 SENIOR ATHLETICS - IN THEIR OWN WORDS! - 2019-20 CHEER

Comments and thoughts shared by Head Coach Nick Welton and his staff

For the 2019-2020 Cheer season, we had 6 amazing seniors on our team, Emily Hinton, Gabi Wolf, Kelly Knudson, Liz Jewell, Madison Gribble, and Tian Jiu Zheng. Below are highlights from 3 of the 6, all 4 year cheerleaders and captains of the team. They cheered football games, basketball games, competed both locally and nationally, organized community philanthropy events and left a lasting impact on the Bellevue Cheer program. We will miss them next year, but are excited for what the future hold for these amazing athletes. - Comments and thoughts shared by Head Coach Amanda Pardee.

KELLY KNUDSON

I will truly never forget my experience on Bellevue Cheer. My time on Bellevue Cheer has helped me learn and grow into the person I am today, and I will forever be grateful. It has taught me how to be confident, kind, and spirited and most of all has taught me be how to be a leader. I have met so many new people that I hope to call my best friends for the rest of my life because they all helped to make my experience great. I strongly believe being a part of Bellevue Cheer is what created such a fun and exciting high school experience and I have had so much fun being a part of such a loving group of people. I have been able to create such great memories and will always be grateful for all of the happy, sad, and exciting moments. I know I will always be able to share the fun memories with my closest cheer friends. I have learned how to push through obstacles in life that come my way because of Bellevue Cheer, and I know I will use what I've learned as I move on throughout my life. After high school, I plan on going to college in California to study and become a marine biologist. I am excited to move on to a new chapter in my life, but I will always remember the fun I had on Bellevue Cheer.

MADISON GRIBBLE

While he's quiet on the field, his play is anything but understated. Conor is a true take-away defender with one of the best wrap checks that Bellevue has seen since Jack Albrecht ( Fortunately Conor's foot positioning is better than Jack's, so we didn't have to see so many trail checks). In one-on-one matchups, there are very few times that anyone would get the best of Conor. Conor, keep that competitive edge sharp and keep pursuing your passions. We know you will be great at whatever you set your mind to!

GABI WOLF

I am so grateful for my time on Bellevue cheer. I was able to make some of the closest friendships I have, and be on a team that is closer than any other one I have been on. I was able to grow as an athlete and as a leader, and couldn't think of a better way to have spent the last 4 years.

Thank you Kelly, Madison and Gabi for sharing what it meant to you to be a Wolverine Cheerleader. Your dedication, commitment and leadership is a model for all of your teammates!
