To Serve All People Following the Example of Jesus

The Faith Practices Initiative of the ELCA urges members of this church to "put their faith into practice" by living out the promises contained in the liturgy for the Affirmation of Baptism. In that promise, we pledge as members of the body of Christ through baptism to:  
  • live among God's faithful people
  • h ear the word of God and share in the Lord's supper
  • proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed
  • serve all people following the example of Jesus  
  • strive for justice and peace in all the earth                                   
(Evangelical Lutheran Worship, p. 236)
 
Serve all people. What an overwhelming thought. Serve all people following the example of Jesus. It may seem impossible. Yet following the example of Jesus is precisely what it means to live out our baptism.

An Overview from

For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many." (Mark 10:45 NRSV)

Serving is at the heart of Jesus' ministry. Making the connection between Jesus feeding the five thousand and setting up a food pantry is easy. God serves others through us. Jesus calls us to be more than good waitstaff. The ministry of feeding is commendable, but there is more to serving.

This article details an amazing youth group activity from First Presbyterian Church in Kilgore, Texas. It pairs middle school youth with adults. Together, they make monthly visits to senior adults in the church.

The youth are given conversation starters and a devotional to offer during the visits. Skills are developed, faith is shared, multiple relationships are built.
