I don’t recall ever making a decision on the matter. I don’t remember not singing. Before I started elementary school, Mrs. Walker, my Sunday School teacher and the preacher’s wife, asked me to sing in the Christmas program. At the designated time, I stepped up onto the platform. I locked my gaze on my toes. I sang Frosty the Snowman. I don’t remember much else about it.
When I started elementary school, I joined the school choir as soon as I could, third grade, as I recall. Then I was in choir in Jr. High School, High School, and, College. My church growing up didn’t have a children’s choir. I started singing in the church chancel choir while I was in Jr. High. There was then a period I didn’t sing in an organized choir. While on active duty in the service, I didn’t attend church.
Back in Texas a few years later, a beautiful daughter came into our lives. I felt she had to be raised in a church family. When Grannie Fry heard we were going back to church, she scolded me, “God gave you a gift, you have to share it.” So going back to church meant singing in the church choir. I’ve sung in church choirs and community choirs since.

So, I sing because it is very satisfying to be part of a meaningful worship service. I know my singing doesn’t touch anyone in the congregation individually. But I also know most in the congregation are touched by our entire choral effort.
And, I sing because Grannie Fry told me to.

For the remainder of the semester, there will be no Wednesday evening childcare on the first and fourth Wednesdays of the month. Childcare will be provided from 5:15 - 9:30 p.m. on the second and third Wednesdays through December 2017.
To make a special request for childcare on a Wednesday not scheduled, please email
Pastor John Leedy one week in advance.

By Their Fruits, Ye Shall Know Them
|
Once again, UPC, in cooperation with the Northwest Austin Rotary Club, will be selling oranges and grapefruit to benefit Micah 6 of Austin. Fred Morgan will be in the courtyard on Sundays after worship beginning October 29, November 5, 12, 15, 19 and 26 to take your orders. If you don’t want a personal box of fruit, you may order fruit boxes to be donated directly to the Micah 6 Food Pantry. Those who order can pick up your box of fruit on Sunday, December 10. Micah 6 receives $10 per fruit box ordered.

Anniversary Celebration Courtyard Donor Pavers
|
As part of our 125
th
anniversary celebration, the Heritage Ministry Team invites you to add to the church’s history by placing in the UPC courtyard a paver in memory or honor of a person/family who has participated in the life of our church community. A list of each donor courtyard paver currently in place by name and location is available in the church office. The new Courtyard Donor Pavers sale will go live Sunday, November 5.
The mission of the Heritage Ministry is to honor and preserve the past, present and future history of UPC
. In 2017, blessed by an anonymous donor, we contracted with HISTORY IT, a digital innovator company, to create a plan to help preserve our archives and digitize selected parts. In early November, materials from each twenty-five year era, 1892-2017, will launch in a digital portal created by HISTORY IT. The portal page will be linked on the UPC website for easy access.

Funds raised from courtyard paver sales will go toward UPC’s continued effort to preserve, archive, digitize and make accessible our stories for future generations.

It's Almost Tamale Time!

Beginning in early November, you can order delicious Manos de Cristo tamales for the holidays. You may order tamales in one of two ways:
- If you prefer to order and pay on-line, go to manosdecristo/tamales
- Look for Karen Grice in the courtyard after worship Sundays through December 3.
To pick up online orders at the church, be sure to scroll down and choose University Presbyterian Church.
Tamales come in 5 flavors: pork, jalapeño pork, chicken, bean, and vegetarian. The cost is $15 per dozen and $8 of each dozen goes to Manos de Cristo to support their many programs.

Fresh tamales can be picked up at UPC after 3:00 p.m. Friday, December 8. The reset will be available cold or frozen on Sunday, December 10. Order lots, they are delicious and help raise money for Manos de Cristo!

There are some other good parenting books that I've been reading lately that I could present on. While a lot of these books are for parenting with teens (which is older than most of our P&F members) I find to have good relationship/communication with your teens really helps if you've already established a good foundation when they are younger, and if you haven't, then trying to develop good communication with your teens is much harder."

During November, the Faith & Life Class will be discussing community.
Our first speaker is Sharyn Reynolds, MDiv, Fellow, American Association of Pastoral Counselors. Sharyn will speak on "The Importance of the Community (Past, Present, and Future) in Maintaining Hope."
The Faith & Life class meets in Room 201, upper level. Join us at 9:15 a.m. for coffee & conversation, 9:30 a.m. for class.

Chris VanderSlice, who died last Saturday. Joyce Inman, Chris' aunt, Joyce Inman, shared this note of thanks:
"Thank you for your nearly 4 years of prayerful support for my nephew-in-law, Chris VanderSlice. His battle with acute lymphoblastic leukemia ended Saturday, October 29

. Please continue to pray for my niece Tonya and her two daughters, Hannah and Elizabeth, and the extended VanderSlice family. Their faith throughout his journey has been inspiring.
