Conference Take-Home Tips
Use these four key questions to hone your craft all year long.
By Allison Armstrong Rehnborg
As journalists, the hunt for knowledge always starts with questions. At the High Desert Media Roundup, I discovered plenty of great answers, but I also came away with four key questions. These questions don’t have simple answers. You can’t put them to bed with interviews or research. Finding the answers to these questions is like a treasure hunt that shapes us into better versions of ourselves.
1. What can I find out?
In “Survival Tips for Successful Event Coverage,” Jennifer Bryant inspired us to take our research skills to another level. Whether you end up using the information in a story or not, research is all about learning–and we never stop learning.
2. How do I make this better?
Shelley Paulson’s session on “Photography Composition for Better Storytelling” reminded us that there’s always room for improvement. Even when we think we’re at our best, we can do better and look at things a little differently.
3. How can I be a “win” for my editor?
In “Secrets Editors Want Writers to Know,” Christine Hamilton influenced us to think smart. Be a win for yourself, your editor, your colleagues and your family–be a win for everybody!
4. What are you most afraid to ask?
In her session on conducting interviews,
USA Today
reporter Erin Richards challenged us to ask “that question you’re afraid to ask?”
During my continuing journey as a freelancer, I’ve decided to keep asking myself these four questions on a regular basis, and I challenge you to do the same. See you in Lexington!
