Assistant Principal's Message                                                       8/23/2019

My name is Mrs. Barrie Muzbeck Pinto and I am thrilled to join FHHS as your Assistant Principal. I grew up in Michigan and obtained my Bachelor's degree in Education from the Ohio State University and a Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction from George Mason University. In addition, I obtained my Certificate of International School Leadership while living in Brazil. I was a middle school English teacher and an Elementary Principal at schools in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and Phoenix, Arizona. Prior to my career in education, I was a USA National Women's Gymnastics Team Member and Pan American Games gold medalist while in high school and won several Big Ten titles as a scholarship athlete at the Ohio State University. 

My first month on campus has been both positive and productive. I feel truly blessed to be surrounded by so many highly skilled and professional educators! Falcon community members have been extremely welcoming which has made my transition to FHUSD smooth and seamless. 

Last Wednesday Dr. Jagodzinski and I met with all grade levels to introduce ourselves and outline our expectations for the school year. The bulk of my presentation was focused on the new communication and support systems put into place to promote student success academically, socially and emotionally. I briefly touched upon the restorative practices I will use to help students reflect upon the choices they make, learn from their mistakes and restore relationships between teachers, students and staff when necessary. The "Falcon Way Expectations" of accountability, discipline, excellence, integrity, professionalism, respect and responsibility are woven into the varied tools I will use when working with students and asking them to reflect upon their actions. Posters and banners of these expectations are all around our campus and I challenged each individual to identify specific behaviors and actions they will use to demonstrate these expectations on a daily basis.

Please help me encourage your students to participate in as many activities, clubs and sports as their schedules allow. Numerous studies have connected participation in student activities to higher grades, improved homework completion, better performance on tests, and an increased likelihood of applying to college. In addition, being part of a team or club gives students a sense of belonging and they develop a personal relationship and ownership to the school. 

High school is a time where students are faced with many changes, challenges and choices and I am ready and prepared to partner with students and families to ensure high school is as positive and productive as possible. In the near future, I will begin offering a series of informational sessions, called "Tuesday Talks," for parents and community members and will cover topics such as Beyond Textbooks, AP Capstone, AVID, AZ M2 test (formerly the AZMerit test), 16 Habits of Mind, Restorative Justice and any other topics pertinent to student success. The purpose of these sessions is to educate parents so that they can help students make informed choices, problem solve and celebrate successes. Dates and times for the "Tuesday Talks" will be communicated here.

Meet Frank, The English Bulldog

This year we will be introducing a therapy dog as needed on our campus. Research shows that therapy dogs offer significant benefits to students in the educational environment. Many students today are dealing with a variety of social and emotional issues, and the ability to share a moment with a loving dog can make quite a difference in their lives. In fact,  New York Public Schools has led the way in this area and are now expanding the program. 

Since Frank is in training, I have asked all the students to just say "hi" to him at this point. In time, they will be able to pet him and interact with him. Currently Frank visits the school a couple times a week for very short visits. He walks the halls while students are in class to get used to the sounds and senses of the campus. Once he is fully trained and certified, Frank will be available to students for a variety of services. He can comfort an upset student, bring a smile to those who need one, and even help students with reading literacy.
