Timber–Strong Design Build Competition
Is your SEA looking for an opportunity to engage with the next generation of structural engineers?
Does your SEA support a student group that is looking to challenge itself and excel at designing structures? NCSEA is excited to be one of the sponsors of the first-ever
National Timber Strong Design Build Competition
being hosted at the
NCSEA Summit
this November in Anaheim, California. NCSEA is looking for help from our SEAs to reach out to local universities to bring together student teams to participate in this event.
NCSEA, American Wood Council (AWC), Simpson Strong-Tie Company Inc. (SST) and APA – The Engineered Wood Association (APA) have developed this student competition based on creating a two-story light-framed children’s playhouse. As a result, NCSEA, AWC, SST and APA are seeking student teams to design and build a playhouse that is sustainable, structurally durable, and efficient.
There is a limited number of open slots in this competition.
If your SEA is interested in supporting a team,

SEAOI's Thoughts on Volunteer Leadership Training?
AWESOME ENGAGEMENT
|
|
SEAOI recently participated in a Volunteer Leadership Training program led by our very own Leo Baran. The event took up a minimal amount of time (both in planning and in execution), but proved to be well worth every second. The active audience consisted of 23 board members, committee chairs and committee members.
"It was phenomenal.
I've never seen such engagement and enthusiasm from our group before–both during the session and even after." said SEAOI Executive Director, Stephanie Crain.
Leo worked with SEAOI's planning committee before the event took place to ensure it was tailored to their needs and concerns. Discussions covered global trends in membership/associations, why members belong, how to keep them engaged, how to be an effective Chair, best practices and more. This short training session has helped get everyone on the same page regarding SEAOI's organizational goals and has created a sense of collective enthusiasm and re-invigoration.
"We received extremely positive feedback from the participants. In the three weeks since we had the training, four committee chairs have implemented new engagement tactics with their groups, we've gotten the Membership Committee re-engaged and focused, and we're in the process of implementing quarterly check-ins to keep the momentum going and ensuring these great ideas don't fall through the cracks. If you have the opportunity, I highly encourage you to offer this training to your leadership. I am still a little flabbergasted by how well our leadership responded to it, and I suspect we will include this training as a regular (bi-annual) offering to new leadership."
– Stephanie Crain, SEAOI Executive Director

NCSEA Grant Partially Funds SEAOCC Snow Load Mapping Project
The Structural Engineers Association of Central California (SEAOCC) was awarded an NCSEA Grant as a part of the
2018 SEA Grant Program
. SEAOCC used this grant to help fund the California Snow Load Mapping Project, which includes a better developed online system and a review of the existing state of case study ground snow loads. Evaluation of this data’s origin will improve the SEAOCC Snow Load Committee's understanding of the current state of snow design practice, and also provide for the establishment of uniform and publicly available ground snow load data. They believe this approach will improve the snow design engineering and building practices in the state of California.
Drawing on the experience of those who developed the SEAOCC online seismic design maps, the committee plans to create an online map of snow loads enforced by local jurisdictions. They began this portion by gathering enforced snow loads from case specific areas, which were then digitally mapped. The next step will be recommending adjustments to those snow loads and commissioning a comprehensive snow load study (much like the Structural Engineers Association of Utah did with their grant from 2017.) Once complete, the committee aims for their website to be a complete snow design tool, offering maps including elevation contours, and printable reports.

2019 IABSE Congress–The Evolving Metropolis
The IABSE Congress
, celebrating the 90th Anniversary of IABSE,
will take place in the great metropolis of
New York City on September 4-6, 2019.
‘The Evolving Metropolis’ will address the social and economic needs of the world. Presentations covering all aspects of structural engineering in the Metropolis will challenge engineers to identify issues, develop sustainable solutions, and execute innovative designs. Through podium, roundtable, panel, and poster presentations, participants will have an opportunity to share their knowledge with others. Those choosing to participate in one of the two special sessions ‘The 200-year Bridge ‘ and ‘Tomorrow’s Affordable Housing’ will become contributors to a state-of-the-practice white paper on each subject to be published by IABSE.

Secure Training to Become a Second Respsonder
Wednesday, October 23, 2019 10:00 am – 4:00 pm
(Central Time)
The California Office of Emergency Services (CalOES) Safety Assessment Program (SAP), hosted by NCSEA, is highly regarded as a standard throughout the country for engineer emergency responders. It is one of only two post-disaster assessment programs that will be compliant with the requirements of the Federal Resource Typing Standards for engineer emergency responders and has been reviewed and approved by FEMA's Office of Domestic Preparedness. Based on ATC-20/45 methodologies and forms, the SAP training course provides engineers, architects, and code-enforcement professionals with the basic skills required to perform safety assessments of structures following disasters.

Guide to the Design of Building Systems for Serviceability
in Accordance with the 2012 IBC and ASCE/SEI 7-10
The guide provides detailed explanations and examples of application of code provisions and standards for a broad scope or materials, building systems, and building components and includes information and examples covering the vast majority of limit states encountered in the structural design of buildings. The discussion and examples are based in the buildings code provisions and include commentary as well as code referenced standards, and publications.
In addition to being an essential resource for practicing design professionals, this guide can be used by educators teaching upper level structural engineering classes. The Guide to the Design of Building Systems for Serviceability is an excellent reference for the architectural or engineering design office, legal firm or other construction professionals who must be familiar with code requirements related to the serviceability performance of buildings.
