Weathering COVID-19:
Fundraising Lessons Learned from the Past
Tuesday, April 21 | 1 PM ET | 12 PM CT | 10 AM PT

These are unusual times we are living in. Right? It’s no longer fundraising as usual.

History is an excellent teacher and there are fundraising lessons we can learn from the Great Recession of 2008-9, the  dot.com  bubble burst, the 1987 Stock Market Crash, and even the Great Depression in the 1930s.
Join Barbara O’Reilly, CFRE, Principal, Windmill Hill Consulting, for a discussion on how you can strengthen your fundraising in the midst of chaos.
You will learn how to:

- Re-calibrate your fundraising strategy based on lessons learned from organizations that weathered the past economic emergencies
- Use this time to assess the short-term and long-term financial impact of COVID-19
- Redefine your case for support in the context of this current pandemic

Interim Inc. Sets Up ‘Warm Line’ for Clients Who Need to Talk to a Peer or Need Food or Provisions

SALINAS, CA. (April 10, 2020) — Interim Inc.’s OMNI Resource Center may be closed, but it has established a Warm Line for clients who need to talk, need support or need resources such as food.

OMNI closed on March 12 and by March 17, its staff was making calls to clients to check on their welfare. Three staff members, Susan Brier, Elizabeth Hodges, and Jessica Sanchez, after brief training from Kontrena McPheter, Interim Peer Outreach and Advocacy Coordinator, made 73 calls in a span of 3½ days.

In the second week of the program, Sarah Chandler and Audra Bonsey joined OMNI staff and were trained by McPheter to work the Warm Line (while Sanchez was moved to Bridge House). There were 85 incoming and outgoing calls for the Warm Line and several care packages of food were provided to clients.

“The majority of people we connected with in the first week were experiencing anxiety and needed more coping skills and help with relaxation, while 11 people were saying that they did not have enough food to eat,” said OMNI Administrator Lisa Corpuz. “In the second week, people were still needing coping skills and relaxation techniques, as well as toilet paper and care packages.”

Spanish language speaker Cyndi Sparkman was assigned to OMNI in the third week, allowing OMNI to resume outgoing calls to Spanish-speaking clients. Even on a part-time basis (from 10 to 20 hours a week) the staff made or answered 388 calls. There were 104 requests for coping skills, 34 for relaxation techniques, and a few more for toilet paper and care packages.

A second Spanish speaker, Veronica Sanchez was assigned to OMNI in the fourth week of the program. Corpuz said having a second Spanish speaker has “been a blessing because while one of them is on a call, the other can take an incoming call in Spanish.”

Clients can call, text, or email a support worker through the Warm Line if they need to talk to someone or need food or supplies. The Warm Line is staffed on a non-emergency basis Monday through Friday from 10 a.m.–4 p.m. at (831) 800-7660; text at (831) 998-7916; by email at  Omni@interiminc.org .

“The Warm Line was our response to supporting our community with emotional preparedness, connection to something or someone and the ability to meet needs one call at a time,” said McPheter. “If you would like to help in this effort, we are accepting non-perishable food donations to help our clients during this difficult time.”

Drop-off sites are available in Monterey and Salinas. Call (831) 649-4522 for locations. If you would like to offer financial support, please call (831) 649-4522 X 205, or you can donate online at  https://donatenow.networkforgood.org/interiminc .

The OMNI Resource Center offers peer-led programs promoting wellness and recovery, as well as recreational and social opportunities. Wellness programs are free and open to anyone with mental health challenges. Programs are also offered off-site at other community locations. No referral is necessary.
LOCAL COMMERCIAL LAUNDRY BEGINS SANITIZED EMPLOYEE MASK PROGRAM
MASKS ALLOW BUSINESSES AND ORGANIZATIONS TO OPERATE IN A SAFER ENVIRONMENT

Marina, Calif., April 14, 2020 — Monterey Bay Laundry, a commercial and retail laundry service company located in Marina, California, is launching a Sanitized Employee Mask Program to provide sanitized facemasks to essential businesses like restaurants, agricultural growers and shippers, supermarkets, delivery companies and non-surgical service organizations. The masks are designed to replace the need for homemade options and provide a consistent and clean product to help protect employees and the public.
“In these challenging times, every essential business is looking for ways to help mitigate the effects of the COVID-19 virus,” said Tom McMahon, General Manager of Monterey Bay Laundry. “We didn’t want to take medical grade units out of the hands of the people who really needed them, but we wanted to make sure we were protecting our employees with something more than a homemade mask or a bandana. To meet our own internal needs, we began utilizing our existing linen supply to create launderable masks for our employees. As we visited other local essential service providers like grocers and restaurants, we noticed a wide variety of facemasks, some with and some without. We thought that this program could solve a lot of problems.”

The one size fits all facemasks are created from 100% two-ply spun polyester and come in a variety of colors. Masks are delivered in sealed packs of 10. The masks are designed to be worn for a single shift and eliminate the need for the mask to be removed during the day, possibly contaminating other surfaces.  At the end of the day the masks are placed into a special bag which is then scheduled for pick up. The masks are immediately sanitized upon arrival at the laundry facility. The sanitization component of the program consists of a bleach-based wash cycle in 160-degree water and a dry cycle at 190-degrees, effectively eliminating bacteria and viruses. Finally, the masks are packaged and then delivered as scheduled allowing for all employees to have a clean, sanitized mask each time they work.

“This program offers a consistently sanitized product that allows organizations to further demonstrate their commitment to enhanced public health processes,” continued McMahon. “From a health and safety standpoint, employees and customers can feel safe knowing that the business is taking extra steps to protect them. Business owners are confident they are doing what they can to provide a sanitary experience.”
Additionally, for each mask put into regular inventory, Monterey Bay Laundry will donate $1 to Meals on Wheels of the Monterey Peninsula. “Our success is dependent on community support,” stated Christine Winge, Executive Director of Meals on Wheels of the Monterey Peninsula. “The Sanitized Employee Mask Program will help our entire community tackle this new challenge. We’re proud to be involved”

Ultimately, the masks are expected to help to provide compliance with the state and county’s public health directives regarding essential businesses and their workers.
