Clay Wilkie was awarded the 2019 CTEI Post-Secondary Teacher of the Year award. CTEI (Career and Technical Educators of Idaho) is an association which supports CTE educators at the State (CTEI), Regional ACTE (Association of Career and Technical Educators), and National ACTE level. Clay, as the Idaho State Post-Secondary Teacher of the Year winner will be forwarded to the ACTE Region V level to compete with other state award winners from the Northwest Region. Winners from the Region V will then be forwarded to the ACTE National Level.

I'm very proud of the achievements of our CSI Idaho INBRE Interns and Scholars in the past year. Alvin Sihipanya and Kalynn Cotten conducted two research projects about composting and human impacts on the local bumblebee population under the direction of CSI Professors Jan Simpkin and Randy Smith. They won first prize in the Scholars category at the State-wide research conference for their work. Jan and Randy have spent the last 10 years helping students to have successful and meaningful research experiences here on campus and these last projects were no exception. Their contributions have been invaluable and will be missed as they move on to other projects in the future.
We also had five students working as Industry Interns in local laboratories this summer, each climbing a steep learning curve to complete a research project in only 10 weeks of work. Cooper Moon won first place in the Intern category for his work on water softening for Amalgamated Research Inc. Jessica Perron won third place in the Intern category for her work testing for suspended solids at Jacobs Labs in the Twin Falls waste water treatment plant. Our other interns also did excellent work! Cora Carpenter studied sugar beet genetics at the USDA ARS in Kimberly. Marissa Steiner studied sugar beet root maggot populations at the University of Idaho extension office in Kimberly. Antonio Granados learned to identify and control disease carrying mosquitos at the Twin Falls Pest Abatement district. We're very grateful to all of these laboratories for hosting our interns this summer! These really are life-changing educational experiences for our students. I also want to thank Dr. Amy Rice Doetsch who has been the Program Manager for CSI's Idaho INBRE Program for the last 15 years. She's done an amazing job establishing this program and the relationships with these labs across the Magic Valley. She's left me with some big shoes to fill and has been incredibly supportive in the last year and a half to help me make a smooth transition into this role.
Congratulations to everyone involved with CSI's Idaho INBRE program! We had a very successful summer.

CSI Performing Arts Announces Auditions for Legally Blonde the Musical

This performance is a collaboration between the CSI Theater, Dance, and Music departments.

Auditions will be held from 3 - 6 p.m., on August 27, 28, 29, in the CSI Fine Arts Theater.
All students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to audition.
Requirements:
- Participate in a 90 minute movement/dance workshop
- Come dressed to move around comfortably
- Present a PREPARED musical selection no more than 32 bars/one minute in length
- Be prepared to do a cold reading from the play (text will be provided)
- Performers are STRONGLY encouraged to attend auditions on August 27 AND 28
Call backs will be August 29.

Open Auditions!!!
The Eugene Ballet- Toni Pimble, artistic director will be coming to Twin Falls to perform the holiday classic The Nutcracker on December 6 and 7. We need your help to fill the roles of Baby Mice, Angels, Bon Bons, Party Guests, and Flowers. This is a chance to dance on stage with a professional ballet company!
Auditions will take place on Thursday, September 12 between 4 and 8:30 p.m. in the CSI Fine Arts Auditorium on the CSI Campus.
The Eugene Ballet requests that all participants arrive at the audition at least 15 minutes prior to the audition time and be ready to dance (dressed and stretched). Because of how the auditions are ran, late-comers will not be allowed to audition. Rehearsals will fall on Saturday afternoons in October and November.
There will be a $10 audition fee. Checks payable to Eugene Ballet.
Nutcracker audition times are as follows:
4:00 Baby Mice Ages 5-7 no height requirement 1 yr ballet pref.
4:30 Angels Ages 7-9 must be under 4'6" 1 yr. ballet min.
5:00 Bonbons Ages 9-11 must be under 5' 2 yr. ballet min.
6:15 Party Children Ages 11-15 must be under 5'2" 3 yr. ballet min.
8:00 Waltz of the Flowers Ages 12-18 5'2" and over 3 yr. pointe min.
Other Notes:
* Please make sure that children audition for the proper roles.
* Students auditioning must be the appropriate age at the time of the audition, not the time of the performance.
* Boys and girls are welcome to audition for all parts except "Waltz of the Flowers", which is only open to advanced female students.
* Girls should wear class uniform, or a solid colored leotard, pink tights and pink ballet shoes, and hair should be secured in a bun.
* Boys should wear white t-shirt, black tights and black ballet shoes.
* All students audition in flat technique shoes EXCEPT "Waltz of the Flowers", who audition on pointe.
* Students should arrive at least 15 minutes prior to audition time to fill out registration forms.
STUDENTS MUST BE AVAILABLE FOR ALL REHEARSALS AND THE PERFORMANCES.
Rehearsals will fall on Saturdays October - December with Rayni Capps.

Turning Apprenticeship Experience into College Credit

As a regional manager at Idaho Power, Angelique Rood is frustrated that her employees are unable to earn college credit in Idaho for course work completed during apprenticeships. "We are the only state that doesn't have that option for our apprentices," Rood said.
That distinction is about to change.
"Idaho Power pretty much pointed at us, rightfully so, and asked us to try to make something happen because it was happening in other states," said Barry Pate, Dean of Technical Education at the College of Southern Idaho. "What we are trying to do for companies that value post-secondary credentials is to create alignment between their apprenticeship programs and state requirements for degrees and certificates."
CSI's new Applied Technology Program creates pathways for workers earning journeyman licenses through federally registered apprenticeships to apply what they've learned toward college credit. "We'll work with them to translate those skills and competencies into College of Southern Idaho credits and that puts them on the pathway to earn additional credits that could result in an Associate in Applied Science Degree," Pate said.
The U.S. Department of Labor reviews and approves the registered apprenticeships to ensure there is adequate instruction occurring in the field and in the classroom to qualify the apprentice as a journeyman in their field. "There is a tremendous amount of rigor involved in a full-fledged apprenticeship program," Rood said. "Most of those programs are going to be at least 6,000 hours in length and often times the classroom instruction is conducted by a college or university in an area where the employer operates."
CSI will launch its Applied Technology program this fall with 40 students. "It has potential to be a game changer and to open doors for those adult learners that we have struggled to find ways to serve," CSI Executive Vice President/Chief Academic Officer Todd Schwarz said.
In addition to her duties at Idaho Power, Rood also serves on the Governor's Workforce Development Council and says several of Idaho's major employers are looking for ways to prepare employees for promotional opportunities that often require college degrees. "We're really grateful to CSI for undertaking this effort," she said. "It doesn't fit within the traditional mindset of what higher education looks like but it is something we believe - both at the Workforce Development Council and at Idaho Power, our apprentices and journeymen deserve."
Rood believes this approach has potential to go beyond CSI. "We've met with the deans of the other community and technical colleges in Idaho and there is great interest in providing programs like this to all employers who have registered apprenticeship programs. CSI has created the framework that we hope will be replicated throughout our state," she said.
"It really will help Idaho's 'go-on' rate. We believe this is incredibly low-hanging fruit to help get to that 60 percent goal."

HEARINGS SET STATEWIDE ON EDUCATION RULES
The Idaho State Board of Education will hold public hearings later this month around the state on education-related rules including the Idaho content standards.
In 2009, Idaho worked with the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers and other states around developing common core content standards in English language arts and mathematics. In 2010, after a series of hearings held around the state, the Board adopted the Idaho content standards, which were approved by the Idaho Legislature the following year.
Content standards are re-evaluated on a rotating basis (in alignment with the curricular materials five-year review cycle). As part of the rolling evaluation process and lawmaker interest, the mathematics and English language arts content standards were opened up for a comprehensive statewide review in 2015-16. Based on that process and feedback received, the Board adopted amended standards in 2016, which were approved by the Legislature in 2017.
"The hearings will provide an opportunity for the public to share comments and specific suggestions they may have about administrative rules," State Board Chief Planning and Policy Officer, Tracie Bent said. "The purpose of the content standards is to set minimum levels for student progress by grade at the primary and secondary level. These minimum content standards are necessary to meet the constitutional requirement to maintain a "uniform and thorough system" of public schools. The method for meeting the standards is the curriculum that is chosen by each school district and charter school. Curriculum is set at the local level by each school district."
Idaho has content standards in 13 categories, eight of them are identified as "core" content areas (IDAPA 08.02.03.105).
