September 2019
Greetings!

It's hard to believe, but fall is here! It's a busy season at Liberty and a great time to re-commit to your fitness goals and possibly switch up your exercise routine with our many options.

Fall programming is underway and that includes the return of our kids' complimentary classes, fall camps and exciting new additions to our adult schedule. Many families take advantage of our Parent's Nights Out which begin on September 20th.

Together we can make this autumn the best ever!

Tomatoes
From the desk of Susan Cutshaw, M.S. Nutritionist

There is nothing better than fresh, perfectly ripe tomatoes and this seems to be a banner year for them.

Plenty of varieties, sizes, colors and flavors can be found at our local farmers markets, roadside stand and grocery stores as well as friends' vegetable gardens. (My own are taking over the kitchen!) Now is the perfect time to enjoy them as summer slowly draws to a close (sigh…)

Tomatoes are a fruit originating from South America, although we typically think of them as a vegetable. Colors vary from red, purple, yellow, orange and green. (Remember the movie Fried Green Tomatoes?)

Here are a few more interesting tomato tidbits:

  • Tomatoes are mostly water (95%)
  • One medium tomato is about 18 calories
  • They are a good source of vitamin C and K, folate, and potassium
  • Tomatoes contain the carotenoids alpha and beta carotene, lutein, and lycopene (carotenoids have antioxidant properties that protects our cells from damage)
  • Lycopene is a red pigment shown to have several health benefits (it’s also the most abundant compound in tomatoes)
  • Eating tomatoes with healthy fats like avocados or olive oil can increase the absorption of their antioxidant compounds like lycopene, up to 15 times
  • Processed tomato products like stewing and tomato paste contain more lycopene than fresh tomatoes
  • Commercially grown tomatoes are harvested while still green and sprayed with ethylene gas to give them the red color
  • To speed up the process of ripening unripe tomatoes, wrap them in newspaper and leave them on your counter for a few days until ready

Directions

Step 1
Make pesto: Place 1 tablespoon of the oil and garlic in a small skillet over low heat. When mixture begins to sizzle, let cook for 30 seconds, then transfer to a food processor. Add remaining 3 tablespoons oil, spinach, parsley, capers, hempseed, lemon zest, lemon juice, salt, and pepper; blend. (Makes 3/4 cup)

Step 2
Make zoodles: With a spiralizer or julienne peeler, slice zucchini into noodles. Warm 1 tablespoon of the oil in a large skillet. Add zucchini and sprinkle with 1/2 teaspoon salt; sauté until tender, about 1 minute. Transfer to a large bowl. Add a few tablespoons pesto; gently toss. (Cover and refrigerate leftover pesto for another use)

Step 3
Warm remaining 1 tablespoon oil in same skillet over medium heat. Add tomatoes; season with salt and pepper. Cook, shaking pan often, until the tomatoes soften and begin to burst, 5 to 10 minutes. Add 3 to 4 tablespoons water partway through to incorporate browned bits from bottom of pan.

Step 4
Top zoodles with tomatoes and Parmesan, if desired.
Guide to Yoga Styles at Liberty

Core & Power
A yoga-based workout.   Familiar poses will be used in this physical class with transitions focused on the co re . The use of light weights and physical phrase repetition may be used to increase intensity. Participants should be prepared to perform various styles of plank and pushups. Yoga skills or background knowledge is helpful, but not required.

Hatha
The lighter side of flow yoga. Hatha, the word, simply means the physical practice of yoga. Hatha, the class, commonly refers to a style that has less of a flow and is not as “tough” as Vinyasa. There are seldom arm balances, inversions or complicated binds in Hatha, but poses may be held for a longer period. Ideal for those looking to develop mental clarity while working on balance, stretch and strength or athletes seeking a practice easier on the shoulder. The slower pace may be used as an introduction to Vinyasa.

Reset and Restore
Undo all that you do. Restorative yoga is all about healing the mind and body through simple poses with the help of props such as blocks, blankets, and straps. Focus on relaxing and releasing to restore balance to our bodies. A great style that anyone can enjoy.

Vinyasa
Quick flowing transitions with a strength focus.   Teachers lead classes that flow from one pose to another to create the feeling of a more intense workout. Breath and flow are linked together, and you may find more challenging progressions such as binds, arm balances or inversions. Knowledge of basic poses is desired, but not required. Ideal as a method of cross training for all types of athletes.

Yin
No flow. Stretch.   Yin yoga focuses on passive, seated or fully reclined postures that target the connective tissues in the hips, pelvis and lower spine. Poses are held for anywhere between one and 10 minutes. Yin can also be a bridge to basic meditation for those hoping to achieve stillness and is ideal for athletic types who need to release tension in overworked joints.

Yogalatte
Yoga with a side of Pilates. If you like to mix it up a little, this is a yoga class mixed with mat Pilates
This fall Liberty is launching a new way to teach youth tennis which incorporates USTA’s Net Generation program. For only the fifth time in the history of tennis, the official rules of tennis have changed. Kids will now compete on courts scaled to their size and with equipment that suit their needs and abilities. Net Generation uses red, orange and green dot lower compression balls, providing slower moving and lower bouncing balls to cultivate a successful learning environment. The rules of tennis now take into account the unique physical and physiological attributes of children.
