Missing Identity, or Identification?
by
 Dr. CarolMarie

I love getting the waiters to sing to me at restaurants!  It really works well in Nashville where many of those working towards fame also wait tables during the day!  It is around the ones with outgoing personalities I tend to see musical notes and encourage them to sing to me.  It's always done in fun and in a way in which it honors their gift!

Recently in an outside patio in Jerusalem, a good looking young man emerged while I was having breakfast.  I could see personality all over him as he sported a polo shirt with the name of the hotel/restaurant near the lapel.  "Would you sing to me?" I asked him.  He shook his head like many others have done before, but I persisted knowing  it usually takes extra encouragement.  "I see music all over you" I said.  "Please sing to me!"

With that he said with a smile, "I am maintenance, not a singer!"  We all laughed!  There may have been a song within him, but he was not ready to pull on that gift.  At the moment he was "maintenance"!

We are in the Hebrew month of Kislev on God's calendar.  I enjoy aligning with God's timetable for it helps me sync with His timing and purposes in a greater way!

Did you know that it was in the month of Kislev that Nehemiah interceded for Israel's identity? (Neh 1)  In the book of Ruth, Ruth was asked "Who are you?" both by Boaz and Naomi.  This is a month to ask your Redeemer and mentors, "Who am I?"  It's rediscovery time!

Israel's walls were down, and they did not know who they were.  It was time for needed restoration and identification to take place.  God is sending a wakeup call to His people all over the world for it is our time too!  The Nehemiah spirit has been on the intercessors because our walls have been down, and we have been vulnerable to the enemy's lies. Nehemiah repented for himself and his people, making fresh covenant with God as he cried out for restoration.  God answered his prayer and gave direction.  It was a process and had to be walked out step by step, but restoration came!  We must be willing to go through the steps also for restoration of our identity!

Maybe your individuality got lost in identifying with your spouse, raising children, making your job or ministry who you were.  For all of us there have been changes!  We may not be married now or have small children to raise.  Let's not just transfer the need for identity to a job, ministry or person.  Beware of vulnerable places where your wall needs to be rebuilt!  The Lord is calling us to be who He created! That only comes through spending time with Him!

When Ruth lay at Boaz feet he asked her "Who are you?"  She replied, "I am your handmaid", for that was how Ruth saw herself.  Boaz did not see her as a slave, but called her "daughter" offering "relationship". Boaz committed to redeem Ruth and Naomi that night, but first Ruth humbled herself and lay in submission at his feet. When Ruth went home Naomi immediately asked her also "Who are you?".  Naomi, her mentor wanted to know if Ruth had made the transition with the Redeemer (Ruth 3:8-10,16).  Do you know there were four months between chapter one when Nehemiah began interceding and chapter two when the plan started unfolding?  I don't know about you, but God is having me stop busyness and spend more time with Him to find my identity and what's needed for this next season!

There's an extra grace I feel, especially this month, to humble ourselves and to identify with our Redeemer!  Listen also to your spiritual mentors that can see what may be hindering this new identification. Replace the past concept of who you thought you were with the truth of how God sees you, a special part of Him!  (For it's about Him, not us anyway!)

It's time to move from maintenance into singing our song of identity!
