Rector's Ramblings

What's in a grocery cart? These days, it's a lot for some folks. If you have been limiting the frequency of your shopping trips it's probably true that your cart is more full than usual each time you check out. Grocery carts can illustrate something else about us, too. What we do with them when we're done might reveal something about us. What does it say about us when we return our carts? When we don't return our carts? Potentially, a lot.

Youth and Children's Activities

Mtr. Katie continues to minister to our children and youth in a wide variety of ways, including newsletters, emails to parents, check-ins, the Christ Church Families Facebook page and last, but not least, weekly Kidurgy worship. If you haven't had the opportunity to experience Kidurgy, click here, or on the caption above, to see the message from the past Sunday. Whether you're a child or a child at heart, you'll enjoy this rewarding presentation of God's Holy Word.

Mtr. Katie's suggested devotions for youth can be found at  d365.org . These  daily devotions are geared towards teenagers - put together by youth ministers. You can even sign up to have the devotion emailed to you daily.

Youth & Children's Summer Programs Update
We wanted to let you know that our summer plans for Vacation Bible School and Serving Our Neighbors, are up in the air. We will definitely NOT be hosting VBS the first week of June, as we know we cannot conduct the program safely at this time.

We are not giving up though! We are monitoring conditions and looking at a few options. One might be that we could host Vacation Bible School in July. Another idea is looking at a virtual VBS that our children and families could tune into from home. As for Serving Our Neighbors, if we can pull it off safely, we will look towards doing something in July. As time unfolds, we will be making these decisions. At this time, we know we cannot conduct these events in June, judging by the data we currently have.  We welcome any feedback or ideas! Just get in touch with Mother Katie at [email protected].

The Backpack Buddies - It's A Team Effort
Volunteer packers from the St. Simons Community Church and First Baptist in Brunswick/Glynn County Farm Bureau joined CCF packers Barbara Abbate and Susan Shipman on the assembly line last week.  Betty Daher is on the left and Debra Orr is on the right.

The Backpack Buddies could not do the enormous job of feeding 850 local children and homeless teens every weekend, without the help of a large, committed group of volunteers. "We're fortunate and blessed that we have people from other denominations, and I've had all kinds of people contact me, to jump in and help," remarked Backpack Buddy leader, Susan Shipman.  And, of course, our thanks continue for our ever-faithful Christ Church set-up crews, packers, drivers and delivery volunteers. Everyone who helps, in any way, is crucial to the operation! THANK YOU!

"The kids are so well-mannered and wonderful about saying thank you. It at least makes you feel like you're doing something in the middle of this to try to help somebody."

This week's Backpack Buddies wish list includes:

* Vienna Sausages
* Beanee Weenees
* Paper Grocery Bags
* Plastic Grocery Bags
* Disinfectant Spray (99% bacteria killed)

If you can pick up any of these items the next time you're in the grocery store, we would be very grateful. All items may be dropped off on the front porch at the Christ Church Parish House.

If you would like to help the Backpack Buddies ministry with a monetary donation, it would be greatly appreciated. You can donate by check (just mail it to Christ Church, at 6329 Frederica Road St. Simons Island, GA 31522 - check memo, Backpack Buddies) or give online here (choose Backpack Program). We are now feeding nearly 300 additional children per week, so every cent will be put to good use!

For more information about the Backpack Buddies program, please contact Susan Shipman at [email protected]
2020 Street Beat Graduates: And Now There Are Four! Let's Show Them Some Support!
Street Beat is a Safe Harbor program that supports homeless teens in Glynn County. Christ Church ministers to these youth through our hunger outreach program.

We are now collecting cards and donations for gift cards for four Street Beat graduates, Shakiya, Isreal, Taliyah and Jacquees, who are graduating from high school. Two of the young ladies will be joining the military and the other will be going to college. Jacquees will be joining the Navy.

Please help us congratulate these young people by dropping off signed graduation cards and contributions towards gift cards in the basket on the front porch of the Christ Church Parish House, by May 25. Please contact Tony Kreimborg at [email protected] if you have any questions.

We Need Your Photos (Again)!
null

We will be celebrating Pentecost, the day that commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and other followers of Jesus Christ in Jerusalem, on Sunday, May 31, 2020. As we will still be worshipping via Livestream that week, we invite you to participate in the service by sending us photos and videos of yourself and your family celebrating Pentecost, by wearing red, holding a candle or another source of light, or even standing in the wind. Perhaps you'd like to create a piece of art that illustrates the movement of the Holy Spirit. Do whatever the "Spirit" moves you to do!

If you have photos you'd like to share for Pentecost Sunday, please send them to Julie Hancock at [email protected], by Friday, May 22. If you have videos to share, please send them to Fr. Tom at [email protected] by Friday, May 22.

We're Still Missing You and Wondering What You're Up To!

We so miss seeing all your great smiles and would love to see how you're faring, while you've been social distancing for the last 10 weeks. If you've got photos of yourself or your family members that you'd be willing to share, please send them to Julie at [email protected] . We will, in turn, share them with all of the congregation, so that we can all "see" each other again!

Farewell to Bishop Benhase
When you're a retiring bishop in the middle of a global pandemic, your farewell celebrations are anything but ordinary. The Savannah Convocation clergy, diocesan staff, and others in the Savannah area came together to provide Bishop Benhase with his very own parade, in front of his home, with some participants going so far as to blast the Bishop's beloved John Prine. Farewell, Bishop Benhase! God bless you and keep you!
New Canon of the Ordinary Appointed

Bishop-Elect Frank Logue is pleased to announce the Rev. Canon Loren Lasch has accepted the call to serve the Diocese of Georgia as Canon to the Ordinary.

Logue states, "The process was not an easy one as we considered excellent candidates who could have served well in this role. Each priest considered was someone who I respected highly as the Canon to the Ordinary is the bishop's deputy, acting on behalf of the bishop in many situations.

Loren brings a deep love of the Diocese of Georgia together with the fresh perspective of having worked in two other dioceses since she last served here. Loren and I worked together 15 years ago when she interned at King of Peace, Kingsland. I discovered then that she has a heart for serving Jesus matched with an array of gifts that have made her a fine priest. In the years since, she has added experiences that make her perfect  to serve as my chief counselor and the number two person in leading our Diocese."
