The Michigan State University television station, WKAR, presented a screening and panel discussion of the film- The Feminine Touch: The Struggle for Equality in Medicine. The film is an original documentary by WEDU in Tampa Bay Florida and the Public Broadcasting Service. Using interviews and historical photographs, the film focuses on the history of osteopathic medicine and how the unconventional A.T. Still was brazen enough to accept women applicants when he founded A.T. Still University.
With a variety of insight from various DO's and historians, the film chronicles the challenges osteopathic medicine faced in gaining acceptance. At the same time, the film shows the parallel struggle of women becoming physicians and being accepted in the healthcare community. The story is well presented with a wealth of historic photos and comments from a number of female leaders.
The evening included questions and conversation as panelists commented on the film and their personal experiences.
The panelists for the event included: Shirley A Harding, DO,; Stephanie Chavez-Yenter, MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine student; Emily K. Hurst, DO, FACOI; Rachel Young, DO. The panel was moderated by Kirsten Waarala, DO, assistant dean at the MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine's Macomb University Center site.
Each of the panelists explained their motivation for becoming a DO and the resistance they faced, both institutionally and from family and friends. The common thread that connected the panelists and the women highlighted in the film was while osteopathic medicine accepted female students on equal footing as males, there were still resistance that could only be overcome with hard work.

Now Accepting Resolutions for House of Delegates
The 2018 Michigan Osteopathic Association House of Delegates will meet on Thursday, May 17 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Westin Southfield Detroit. If you have resolutions you wish to submit to the 2018 House of Delegates, you can now do so via the MOA website.

Any MOA member in good standing may author a resolution; however, introduction of resolutions to the House of Delegates is limited to delegates, alternate-seated delegates, component associations, MOA Departments, Councils, or Board of Trustees. Non-delegate status members in good standing should contact their component association for assistance in identifying an appropriate channel for resolution introduction.

Work with your component society if you are interested in submitting a resolution or serving as a delegate. The deadline for submitting resolutions, and delegate names, is March 18, 2018.

Improving CME Sessions: Audience Participation Tool Survey

Tree of Peace Fundraiser

The Advocates for the Michigan Osteopathic Association (AMOA) are once again presenting a very special opportunity to remember that special person while supporting the programs of the Advocates. The Tree of Peace is a fundraising program held annually where donors can honor their loved ones through ornaments and lights.
The Tree of Peace will be displayed in the lobby of the offices of the Michigan Osteopathic Association for the month of December in Okemos.
All proceeds of this fundraiser will benefit our ongoing projects in support of the Osteopathic Profession. One such project, the Distracted Driving Simulator, continues to gain attention, and we are to reaching out across the state to interested hospitals, service organizations and schools.
There are three ways to give:
* A Shining Light : For a $10.00 minimum donation, a Light is dedicated in Memory of Honor of your loved one.
* A Keepsake Ornament : For a $40.00 minimum donation, a Keepsake Ornament will be placed on the Tree.
* A Tree of Peace Sponsorship : For a $100.00 minimum donation, a Keepsake Ornament will be placed on the tree plus you will receive that Keepsake Ornament when the tree is taken down in January.

The MHA Keystone Center Speak-up Award
Launched in March 2016, the MHA Keystone Center Speak-up! Award is designed to acknowledge the efforts of individuals or teams within MHA Keystone Center Patient Safety Organization hospitals who speak-up to prevent potential harm to patients or other staff members. The award not only represents a volitional voicing of concerns by one or more people, but is a tool through which one may eliminate preventable harm caused by miscommunication and non-communication.
