PINKK: KINDNESS WILL WIN
It is a difficult time. It's hard to make sense of the senseless. I have paused so many times before endeavoring to write this. Words did not come easily.
We are living in times where it seems kindness and empathy are hard to find. There is so much anger. So much pain. Yes, we should be angry, outraged. Yet my hope is still that we can find inspiration in one another if we open our eyes and hearts we can catch a glimpse of kindness in one another.

I am reminded of Viktor Frankl. Frankl was a Holocaust survivor whose parents, brother and pregnant wife all perished in the camps. What he took away from that unimaginable horror became the basis for his timeless book,  Man’s Search for Meaning . As he was completing that masterpiece, he also published a collection of his lectures in Germany. Now, these have been published in English at a time when Frankl’s message is particularly needed, in the book Yes to Life: In Spite of Everything.
Yes to Life: In Spite of Everything — contains remarkable reflections on what it
means to be human in a world disillusioned by the Holocaust. As Maria Popova  writes in Brainpickings , Frankl “cautions against the defeatist ‘end-of-the-world’ mindset with which many responded to this disillusionment, but cautions equally against the ‘blithe optimism’ of previous, more naïve eras that had not yet faced this gruesome civilizational mirror reflecting what human beings are capable of doing to one another.”

"Everything can be taken from a man but one thing:
the last of the human freedoms -- to choose one's attitude
in any given set of circumstances,
to choose one's own way."
Viktor Frankl

What attitude will YOU choose?
What is one simple kind thing YOU can do to make things better?
Today is a great day to amplify the voices and work of the peaceful protesters and otherwise stay out of the way. Here are five ideas on how you can support
and contribute to making the world a better place right now.
  1. Fill up your feeds. Are there a lot of people of color on your Twitter and Instagram and Facebook feeds? If not, visit the social media pages of your favorite black thinkers, artists, politicians, athletes, and public figures, and see who they follow. Follow ’em. Here is a list of anti racism resources: https://medium.com/wake-up-call/a-detailed-list-of-anti-racism-resources-a34b259a3eea
  2. Donate. Truth: Some nonprofits are better run than others. Here’s a list of 25 well-regarded nonprofits  that work to protect civil and legal rights and promote tolerance. You can’t go wrong by picking three and donating.
  3. Buy from black-owned businesses. Google “black-owned business in [my city]” or “black-owned restaurants in [my city]” to find a local roundup. (Nationwide directories are still spotty, unfortunately.) Many black businesses are struggling with the pandemic. We like these delightful book, homeware, and fashion options. Today and every day.
  4. Read or watch. Read Tressie McMillan’s totally brilliant collection Thick. Here is list of black owned book stores in the U.S. https://lnkd.in/euK-Na4 and curated national directory https://lnkd.in/eqHsj4k and for Chicago area a local black owned store: https://bookshop.org/shop/Semicolonchi Watch the excellent documentary Accidental Courtesy. For kids: a YouTube read aloud: Something Happened in Our Town
  5. Vote. Primaries are in many states still, many which were previously postponed due to the pandemic. Either get your ballot in, or text your friends to make sure they vote. Nothing changes without the right people in office.

How can PINKK support you? Let's all try and be there for others in whatever way we can. We do not know what others are experiencing right now as we are feeling so much pain. Let's be good to one another. Reach out to me with ideas you want to share.
I will wrap with this quote:

"It's natural to wish for life to just: 'get back to normal' as a pandemic and economic crisis upend everything around us. But we have to remember that for millions of Americans, being treated differently on account of race is tragically, painfully, maddeningly 'normal' - whether it's while dealing with the health care system, or interacting with the criminal justice system, or jogging down the street or just watching birds in a park. This shouldn't be 'normal' in 2020 America. It can't be 'normal.' If we want our children to grow up in a nation that lives up to its highest ideals, we can and must be better."
Former President Barack Obama

Kindness will win. It must.
Violence only begets violence.
Protesting peacefully can be kind.
BE KIND. Love one another.

Have you wondered how your personal story can affect and inspire others? Flying by the Seats of Their Skirts i s a collection of stories from real women that do just that.

Flying by the Seats of Their Skirts includes…

  •  A captivating story in each chapter, written by a woman using one word that currently defines how she is showing up in the world.
  • Stories with a foundation in kindness via topics like resilience, gratitude, bravery, perseverance, giving, hunger, passion, positivity and more.
  • Empowering you with the knowledge that the same challenges we all face will continue when good capable women do nothing. These stories break that mold.
