May 2019 Newsletter
Hello ELITEAM Friends,

Snow in May!?!?!?

Winter doesn't want to let go as we have seen snow falling on spring flowers! Although we're cruising into Spring now, many of you will continue to chase that snow to Mt. Hood for training in June. When you're there, say hello to Fuxi and ask about our new Fuxi-ELITEAM Race Suit!

In the meantime, we challenge you to work your core everyday and try a new sport! (How about Rollerblading? We've got a great deal for you! See below.) Both are excellent ways to improve your athleticism. No matter what workout or sport you choose to do, be sure to fuel your body for performance beforehand with the delicious and nutritious Springtime Smoothies below.

The ELITEAM staff are in heavy prep-mode planning for our camps that start in just 6 weeks! Doug is designing the 2019 Camper T-shirt, which is almost complete and will be revealed on July 13th. Coach Zack has been in the Ropes Courses in VT making sure all is safe and ready. Coach Molly is devising new and fun ways to train on our Rollerblades. Coach Chauncey is dreaming up new Sufferfest options. And finally, Coach Kelley is experimenting with recipes for this Summer to make sure they are tasty as well as healthy.

We've added a Park City camp to the schedule this summer. We're excited to team up the Park City Ski and Snowboard to offer a day camp in August. Plus, there are still spots available in our VT summer camps, so it's not too late to join the FUN. Spread the word to your friends and teammates! (See below for more details on openings and wait lists.)

We are getting super excited for this Summer and can't wait to see meet all the new ELITEAMers and welcome back our returning athletes! Get ready for challenges, craziness, learning and FUN!

Try Something New!
Try a new Sport or Activity this Spring

No matter what your age, trying a new sport or activity is a great way to take a mental break from the rigors of your daily training and also a great way to teach your body new agility moves. Springtime is the perfect time to change it up! After a long season on the slopes, and pushing yourself mentally and physically, signing up for a new sport or taking on a new challenge is both refreshing and fun!

There are so many interesting and cool sports out there to try. Think about what you would like to learn. Things like juggling, uni-cycling and skateboarding are fun activities that you can learn on your own. Or, maybe you want to join a team and learn volleyball, fencing, tae kwon do, or hockey. No matter what the sport, you will benefit in two ways.

First, learning new agility movements needed for your new sport will help you in your primary sport. Think of it as learning, perfecting and storing new movement patterns in your "Library of Movements". Your brain and body will now have more movements to choose from when you need to hop over a huge rut in a SL or absorb a knoll during a GS. You will be a more agile, quick and creative athlete in the end.

Second, it's fun to be a beginner and the freedom that brings. Who cares if you crash? Who cares if you are not very good? This is a chance to enjoy a new sport with no expectations and no pressure. Now is the time to just go out and enjoy something new.

The Importance of Core
First of all, what is core? Most people think of the core as a nice six-pack, but the truth is that the abdominal muscles are a very small part of the core. What experts refer to as the "core" actually consists of more that 15 different muscles that stabilize the spine and pelvis, and run the entire length of the torso.

Because the core muscles stabilize the spine from the pelvis to the shoulder, they allow the transfer of power to the arms and legs. All powerful movements originate from the center of the body out, and never from the limbs alone. Before any powerful, rapid muscle contractions can occur in the extremities, the spine must be solid and stable. The more stable your core, the more powerfully your legs and arms can contract.

For dynamic sports like alpine skiing, soccer or lacrosse, the benefits of a strong core are:
  • better transfer of power during each turn or while stopping/shooting and changing direction
  • quicker reaction to changes in terrain and opposing players
  • increased resistance to the forces trying to move us out of a balanced position

There are a ton of core exercises out there. It's not just about sit-ups anymore! Below are a few ideas to get you started. Add in your own favorites, and keep growing that list. Final Note: You can do core EVERY DAY - you don't need to give your abs a rest!

CORE: Reverse Crunches, Planks, Side Planks, Bicycles, Hollow Body Hold (keep your lower back on the floor), Russian Twists (with or w/out weight), Dead Bugs (slow & controlled), Hanging Leg Raises (if you have a bar), Oblique V-ups, Supermans.

  • Bee pollen contains more protein than any animal source and more amino acids than equal weight of eggs or beef!

  • Bee pollen is great for natural allergy relief and is responsible for the many health benefits of raw honey. It’s rich in vitamins, minerals, proteins, lipids and fatty acids, enzymes, carotenoids and bioflavonoids — making it an antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral agent that strengthens the capillaries, reduces inflammation, stimulates the immune system and lowers cholesterol levels naturally.
