Hurricane Dorian Data Collection Update
September 4, 2018
NC Natural Disaster/Storm Questions are updated in HMIS@NCCEH
Hello,

Everyone in North Carolina is preparing for Hurricane Dorian. Stay informed about the storm and how to prepare at www.ncdps.gov/dorian2019.

After the storm passes, we also need your help to connect clients to eligible services and show the impact of natural disasters on our homeless system. We updated the data collection tools to allow you to track services for clients displaced by the storm as soon as impacted clients present to you. These questions are grouped together as the NC Natural Disaster section in HMIS.
How to collect NC Natural Disaster responses
NC Natural Disaster/Storm Sub-Assessment collects the location, timing, and housing-specific needs. Like other sub-assessments, it begins with a gateway question to identify if the client is experiencing homelessness because of a natural disaster. Then the client is led through a series of questions, including:

  1. The client giving verbal consent or not to coordinate disaster relief assistance
  2. Which natural disaster or storm contributed to the client's current experience of homelessness
  3. Where the client stayed immediately before evacuation or displacement
  4. When the client left the area impacted by the storm
  5. Details about the client's housing/property damage

Remember to get contact information for clients so follow-up is possible. Thank you for your help to get folks the resources they need!
If a client has been impacted by multiple storms
Collect information from the client about their experience with previous storms like Hurricane Florence or Matthew.

Click on the example (right) to see how a client impacted by multiple storms may look in HMIS. A new record of homelessness due to a natural disaster is added for each storm.
Stay Safe and Thank You!
Make sure that you visit www.ncdps/dorian2019 to prepare for Hurricane Dorian!

We appreciate all of your hard work day in and day out to keep our communities safe. As we prepare for another slow-moving hurricane headed towards our coast, we are grateful for all of the community partners who helped NC respond to Hurricane Florence and helped us learn how to apply our system's strengths towards disaster response.

Please let us know if you have any questions!
