Happy Spring ELITEAMers!

Back when I was racing, the end of the ski season was always a big relief, sprinkled with a little disappointment from missed opportunities, but also included a big helping of happiness for things that went well during training and race season. It was a time for reflection, but also a time for dreaming and goal setting. Before mtn biking and other sports took my attention away, I would make a commitment to making big physical and mental gains over the summer so I would be prepared and ready to rip come November.

Even though I am not racing anymore, I still set personal goals. This Summer my goals are to train smart and fully for my 100 mile ultra running race in September, to work on my flexibility and mobility so I can reach 4 inches past my toes, and to focus on high intensity interval training so I will be ready to ski non-stops my first day of skiing in the Fall!

We hope all of the ELITEAMers had a great season and take the time to set some goals now for this Summer. Coming to ELITEAM is the perfect way to commit to those goals! We have some great challenges, workouts, and a ton of fun lined up for this July. We still have a few spots available in the camps so spread the word to your friends and teammates before we sell out!

Lastly, we have just added a new camp to the schedule this summer! In August we'll be partnering with Park City Ski and Snowboard to offer a five day camp at the Utah Olympic Park. (More info below.)

Congrats to all on your efforts this ski season and let's look forward to our favorite Spring sports, warmer temps and lots of sunshine!

Spring Fitness Goals
Spring is the time to build a solid foundation for your fitness. That means "aerobic" workouts that build up your endurance should be on your list, along with some general strength training.

Aerobic workouts might include 30+ minutes of hiking, biking, running or rollerblading. (Longer duration and lower intensity is the goal.)

In-line Skating is a really fun way to mix up your aerobic workouts. Not only is it great cardio training, but it's ski specific and improves your coordination, balance and agility too.

If you're interested in purchasing Rollerblades, we have an exclusive deal for you! Rollerblade is offering a discount of 40% off the retail price of any pair of skates to ELITEAM athletes who are registered for the 2019 camps. This is a great deal!!!

Gratitude
It's time to say "Thank you"
Last month was a time to reflect on your ski racing season. Hopefully you took a few minutes to look back at your training and races, and picked out some things that went well and also wrote down a few things that you can work on next season. If you did that, congratulations, you're already ahead of the game!

This month, you have one more task to wrap up the season. It's time to say "Thank You". You would not have been able to accomplish everything this Winter without the help of a lot of people. Your parents helped keep you organized, purchased all of your equipment, got you to all of your training and races, and overall supported you in every way possible. Your coaches set a lot of training courses, helped you improve your technical skills and worked with you to keep a positive attitude. You may have had to miss some time in school too, so your teachers probably helped you stay on track with your classwork. And I'm sure many of your teammates cheered you on at races and cheered you up when you had a tough day.

Your assignment is to write a thank you note to someone who helped you this winter. It could be a parent, friend, coach, teacher, etc. The note doesn't have to be long, but it's important to write one. Take a moment and think about what this person did for you. Write that down and thank them for it! Not only is it important to thank this person, but it's important for you to remember that it was because of other people's kindness and generosity that you were able to pursue your ski racing goals this winter, and that's an amazing gift! Be grateful for that privilege. Now go write that letter!

Brain Food

Boost your Brain Power!
Studies have shown that dietary factors can have a significant impact on your overall brain health.
Brain-boosting foods are high in antioxidants and fiber, rich in healthy fats, contain gut-healthy probiotics, and have powerful anti-inflammatory properties.

Everyone, everywhere can benefit from a brain healthy diet, but don't forget that, as athletes, the mental side of sports plays a HUGE role in your performance. If you want to be the very best athlete and competitor you can possibly be, you need to fuel your body AND your brain!!! So fill up your plate with the foods below to optimize your brain health. Your focus and mental skills will be razor sharp out on the mountain, field and court!

  1. Plant Based Oils- extra virgin olive oil & coconut oil
  2. Nuts- organic walnuts and almonds
  3. Wild Caught Fish- oily fish is best, especially salmon (also trout, herring, sardines)
  4. Berries- they deliver a mega-dose of anti-oxidants
  5. Fermented Foods- probiotics (ex. pickled fruits/veggies) and prebiotics (ex. garlic, onions)
  6. Above Ground Leafy Vegetables- ex. spinach, kale, broccoli, asparagus, dandelion greens
  7. Avocado- consume on it's own, add it to a salad, or use avocado oil for cooking
  8. Tumeric- an antioxidant powerhouse! This spice will add flavor and reduce inflammation.
  9. Eggs- contrary to popular belief, cholesterol is actually very healthy. It comprises part of the membrane of brain cells and functions as a key antioxidant to protect them from damage caused by oxidation. So, breakfast, lunch or dinner... eggs are a thumbs up!

ELITEAM Out & About
Doug's Trip East
Doug flew back East for a quick four day trip earlier this month. His first stop was to Crossfit TT (Threshold Training) in Burlington Vermont run by ELITEAM Alum Meghan Barnes and her husband Tyler. Meghan was also a coach at ELITEAM for many years and runs a great gym for both adults and young athletes. Doug showed up for the 6AM workout and was excited to see ELITEAMer Kate there sweating it out and pushing her limits as well! If you live near Burlington, VT stop by Crossfit TT, say hi to Meghan and learn about their great training opportunities. We highly recommend them! You can check them out at CrossfitTT.com.

With some sore muscles, Doug then caught up with Coach Zack for some early ELITEAM prep. They inspected the Ropes Course, organized all the equipment and brainstormed on fun and new ways to challenge the campers this Summer!

The last stop was Boston to Emcee the YES (Youth Enrichment Services) banquet. The YES organization gives underprivileged Boston youth incredible athletic opportunities like skiing, rock climbing and leadership challenges. At the event, Doug caught up with three YES Ambassadors from the US Ski Team- Jessie Diggins, Tricia Mangan and Nina O'Brien (photo above). While at the banquet Doug also ran into many ELITEAM families, including Mark and Wendi McKenna whose five kids all went through ELITEAM for 6 years each. We believe the McKenna's are the longest standing family in the history of ELITEAM, joining us for a total of 17 years!!!

YES is an amazing non-profit organization.
