GROW Starts with Setting Goals
The start of a new season brings with it a renewed sense of anticipation and excitement about what lies ahead. As coaches, preparing to head into your first practice or competition is a great time to assess where your team stands and what you hope to achieve during the new season. As a Champion coach, each season should start with goal setting. This should include coaches, athletes and the team as a whole. Watch the short video above to see what Play Like a Champion Program Director Kristin Sheehan and veteran coach Rich Hoyt have to say about goal setting, then consider how you will help your team to set goals in the upcoming (or current) season.

Remember to set physical , mental and character (moral) goals for the coming year as well as both individual athlete and team goals. Consider setting SMART goals by using this simple worksheet . Give the athletes ownership by involving them in the process, then emphasize effort and persistence while athletes strive to reach their goals. Remember that the Cardinal Virtue that goes with goal setting is Fortitude !
Continue to GROW Throughout the Year
Champion coaches continue to learn every day, so Play Like a Champion works to provide continuing education and resources to support you and your teams throughout the year. One of the ways we provide resources and interact is through our social media channels. Follow us on Facebook , Twitter and Instagram to get daily news, notes and resources you can use to develop yourself and your team. Then interact with our staff and the national Play Like a Champion community to ask questions, learn from others and gain valuable insights from coaches, administrators and experts across the country.
A Prayer for Teams
This is the beginning of a new day. God has given me this day to use as I will. I can waste it or use it for good. But what I do today is important because I’m exchanging a day of my life for it. When tomorrow comes this day will be gone forever, leaving in its place that which I have traded. I want it to be gain not loss, good not evil, success not failure. I know I shall not regret the price I have paid for it because the future is just a whole string of now’s! Lord, help me to live this day according to your will. Amen.

A Prayer by Lou Holtz, Hall of Fame College Football Coach
