James Richman joins Boyne Chamber board of directors
James Richman
James Richman
James Richman, a financial advisor with the Boyne City office of Edward Jones, has joined the board of directors of the Boyne Area Chamber. Richman was appointed to fill a board position previously held by Chris Bandy. Chamber Executive Director Kim Akin said, "We are happy to have James join our board, and we extend our thanks to Chris Bandy, who served on the board for nearly three years, including one year as board president."
Richman said, "I'm excited for the opportunity to work with the people on the chamber board. It's a good, diverse group of people. I enjoy what I call the Boyne City attitude. People really want to work together - rich or poor, Democrat or Republican, it doesn't matter. People come together and accomplish things here."
Richman grew up in Harbor Springs, earned a bachelor's degree from Olivet College and went on to receive an Executive MBA from the University of Missouri in Kansas City in 2010. He moved away from Northern Michigan for 14 years, teaching sixth grade in Florida, and working as a realtor in Kansas City, but then "I wanted to come home."
James and his wife Anastasia just celebrated their first wedding anniversary after getting married under the Gazebo in Old City Park with a reception at the Veterans Park Pavilion. They now live in the Harborage Park area of Boyne City. James is an active member of the Boyne Valley Lions Club.

Irish Consul General visits Boyne City and Lions Club
An official from the Irish government visited Boyne City Wednesday. Consul General Brian O'Brien came to town as part of the newly-established sister city relationship with Ireland's Boyne Valley.
On the consul general's visit here, he spoke to the luncheon meeting of the Boyne Valley Lions Club at the Boyne District Library.
O'Brien is traveling with his parents, who he said "are ready to move here." After the Lions meeting, he was greeted by leaders at Boyne City Hall, which was flying the Irish flag in honor of the new "twinning" relationship. Thursday, he plans to visit Beaver Island for their new Irish Festival.
The Boyne twinning relationship was finalized on July 18th, when Boyne Valley officials came to Boyne City.  Boyne City owes its name to Boyne Valley, which settler John Miller thought the Boyne City area resembled when he first settled here in 1856.

Create accepting applications for Artist in Residency Program
Create: Community Arts Studio (CCAS) is now accepting applications for its fall Artist in Residency Program. CCAS believes studio space is critical for artists and understands the importance of having dedicated space to work in. The Artist in Residence (AIR) program at Create is an intensive day program offered to emerging high school artists that forms a positive network of artists to expand one's existing practice, work collaboratively, discuss art critically and inspire one another.
Each year, CCAS attracts 10 aspiring artists into the AIR program, offering an unparalleled studio experience. The program is a four-month residency in the fall and spring semesters with five new artists chosen each residency. Students who are enrolled in high school by the fall of 2019 and reside in Charlevoix and Emmet County are eligible to apply.
Recipients are awarded dedicated studio space, a stipend for art materials and transportation, and the opportunity to exhibit work in Gallery 151. Through a series of group lectures, visiting artists and studio tours, students will gain exposure within their communities and throughout Northern Michigan.
To apply artists must complete an online application and attend Portfolio Review Day. The studio will determine recipients based upon the creativity and integrity of the individual, the ability to collaborate with other artists, and a strong desire to expand one's artistic practice. Applications must be electronically submitted before midnight on September 27th.

Jackie Wollenberg: "Painting pushes me to learn"
Jackie Wollenberg
Jackie Wollenberg
Jackie Wollenberg is the featured artist at the Boyne Arts Collective Gallery. After retiring, she started painting "to fill the creative void left after teaching for 40 years," she said. "I've always had a desire to paint and brought this to fruition with the help of June Storm, a wonderful instructor of watercolor. Painting has been a source of great joy and contentment - a wonderful "go to" when creative urges show up on a given day. Painting also continually presents mindful challenges and pushes me to learn."
Jackie grew up in Birmingham, Michigan. After marrying Bob in 1973, they settled in Boyne City and were the teachers who created the Boyne City Drama Department. Jacqueline has always been involved in art from a young age and became an active artist and curator of the Boyne Arts Gallery. She enjoys running, gardening, reading and visiting art galleries during her travels. Her passion is creating and she always says: "My greatest creation is my daughter Zachera!"

October 4 - Where are the babies?  Twenty years ago, there were two births in our community for every death. Today, deaths outnumber births.  Many other major changes are taking place locally and statewide. If our community's destiny is tied to our demographics, we need to understand these changes and what they will mean for our future and our families. Eric Guthrie, state demographer in Michigan's Bureau of Labor Market Information & Strategic Initiatives in the Department of Technology, Management & Budget, comes from Lansing with the numbers to show us how Michigan has changed and where we are likely headed.

September 7: Suzie Vinnick -
A Saskatoon native transplanted to the Niagara Region of Ontario, Roots and Blues singer Suzie Vinnick is a three-time Juno Nominee, CFMA Award winner, and a 10-time winner of the Maple Blues Award for songwriting, female vocalist, acoustic act and more. Singer-songwriter doesn't begin to describe her. She picked up her first guitar at the age of 9 and went on to learn bass, saxophone, mandolin, lap steel, piano, and more. Suzie has a voice you've heard a thousand times and one you'll never forget. It soars, it growls, it whispers and it shouts from a deep, deep well of emotion. The pure joy she exudes when she picks up that guitar is so worth the show.  www.suzievinnick.com
