What's Happening at TRCS
A MESSAGE FROM NIC CHAPIN
|
Opening the school year is such an exciting time! Watching everyone proudly come to school this week has been an inspiring experience. Our staff welcomes you and has been anxiously awaiting the start of the year. It has been a great first week! Our eighth-grade leaders have been fantastic helping get our new students acclimated to TRCS! Our beginning of the year PE unit has been baseball/softball-themed through the great game of Wiffle Ball. I have been amazed at the participation and sportsmanship and there’s nothing like hearing the crack of the bat hitting the ball! We finished up the hot week with a visit from the ice cream truck! Students enjoyed a cool treat to end a hot week that was packed with activities.
I have also been impressed with how focused students have been working on their pre-assessments. It can be challenging for students to go through these during the first week, but they have been determined to do their best. These pre-assessments provide valuable information and insight for our teachers as they continue to plan out the year.
A reminder that our new dismissal time is 3:15 this year. I want to thank our parents for their patience as we continue to fine-tune the end of our daily schedule and as our students get used to the dismissal process.
The theme for the 2019-2020 school year is compassion. Our students did a great job learning about compassion and modeling it throughout the week! I hope everybody has a wonderful holiday weekend! Have fun and be safe. We will see everybody on Tuesday!
Compassion quote of the week: “Let us be those creative dissenters who will call our beloved nation to a higher destiny. To a new plateau of compassion, to a more noble expression of humanness.” -Martin Luther King Jr

We strive to keep the dismissal line of cars moving smoothly and efficiently, with safety always at the forefront of our minds. We appreciate the patience of all drivers as we establish the routine of daily student pick ups. Here are some tips to help keep things moving quickly:
- Stagger your arrival! While we begin to put students in cars promptly at 3:15 pm, we are outside until 3:30. Consider arriving at 3:20-3:25 to miss the early rush!
- Picking up three or more students? Please park down in the gravel. A teacher will dismiss carpool groups to your car and you can use the outside lane to exit the driveway.
- Picking up one or two students? Please use the inside lane and pull as far forward as you can when you get to the door area where students are waiting.
- At the driveway entrance if you are picking up at the front door stick to the inside lane just to the parking lot. This will keep the outside lane open for carpool drivers to make it to the gravel lot and help prevent a back up on Ek Road.

We hope you have marked your calendar for this Thursday September 5th to join us for our Back to School Gathering and/or New Parent Q & A. All parents are welcome to join us at 3:30-4:15 for a brief welcome to the school year, introduction of our TRCS staff, and meet other parents. If you are a new parent, please plan stay from 4:15-5:00 pm for a brief meeting to learn about TRCS culture, what to expect this year and get all of your questions answered! Students are welcome to stay after school and wait in the library until the meetings are completed.

We have two opportunities for conferences this fall:
NEW STUDENTS
On September 20th, we invite parents of students new to TRCS for 19-20 to attend a conference with a teacher. We will release the sign ups on this Thursday in conjunction with our New Parent Q & A session. These sign ups will be via Sangha, so please make sure you sign up (see below).
RETURNING STUDENTS
On October 17th and 18th, we invite parents of all returning students to conference with a teacher. Sign ups will be coming soon via Sangha, so be watching the Wave for announcements!

|
All TRCS parents are invited to sign up for Sangha. This is the best way to stay on top of events, signups and messages. Along with this newsletter, we use Sangha for much of our communications from school to home. You have the option of downloading the Sangha app to your smartphone and be able to get alerts and announcements as they are posted. We are also using Sangha for conference sign-ups, so if you haven't already, you will need to accept the email invitation that has been emailed to you. Please contact
[email protected]
if you need assistance!

There are no advance orders, but please we watching for the announcement for the window of dates that pictures will be available to order. Nancy will announce a window of a week or so that pictures will be available for purchase. Don't miss that deadline! We have had Nancy taking our school photos for many years and we love collaborating with local businesses like

Our
after school care program
will begin on Tuesday, September 6th. In 2019-20, we will offer after school supervision for students on Tuesdays and Thursdays until 5:00 pm if school is in session. Teachers are
not
available during this time for tutoring. It is a quiet work time for students to catch up on homework or read a book. Please contact
the office
for more information on this program, especially if you are planning on your student staying after school!

All students will begin MAP assessment testing in Language Arts and Math on Wednesday and Friday next week. These fall assessments help us get a baseline for the school year and provide the data necessary to meet the academic needs of individual students. The results will be shared during our fall conferences. Thank you in advance for getting your kids to school on time, have them get a good nights sleep and a healthy breakfast before testing on Wednesday and Friday!

Students that were enrolled at TRCS last year completed all required state testing in May 2019. Our office has been waiting for notification from the Oregon Department of Education that testing results are finalized so we can send them on to parents. We appreciate your patience while we wait for the official word, then we will mail all results to your homes. Thank you!

Next week, Wednesday and Friday are PE days. Please make sure all students are prepared with appropriate shoes, comfortable clothing, and water bottles. We also suggest sunscreen and hats for sun protection! As a reminder. PE units are a required part of our curriculum and for a student to be excused from any PE activity, we need to have a doctor's note.
