As the holiday season and New Year approaches, it is a natural time to take stock of 2018's highlights and take pride in our excellent care.

As I close out my first month as the hospital's new President and CEO, I remain impressed every day by the tremendous skill, passion and compassion of our staff, physicians, volunteers and learners.

Beat the post-holiday blues

The holidays can be a joyful time but they are often paradoxically very stressful.
The holiday season just whirled through your home and then left, leaving you with a pile of dishes and leftovers. And, while it's nice to put your feet up and return to normality, there may be a feeling of emptiness tinged with exhaustion that's hard to shake.

"The holidays can be a joyful time, but they are often paradoxically very stressful," says Dr. David Koczerginski, Chief of Psychiatry and Medical Program Director of Mental Health. 


Making each birth a unique story

The birth of a baby is an exciting and memorable time.
Each year there are more than 5,000 births at North York General Hospital. "There's something so unique about every single birth story; the experience for a woman and her family is theirs, and no two can ever be duplicated," says Sabrina Ashmead, a Registered Nurse on the Labour and Delivery Unit.

Volunteer Jackie Griffin has been playing the piano since she was six years old. By sharing her talent, she helps brighten the days of patients on the Reactive Unit and provides enjoyment to everyone in the Torokvei Atrium. 


Toronto clinicians identify global primary care priorities

New research led by Toronto clinicians has identified global priorities in primary care, which could lead to more strategic resource allocation in efforts to solve the world's most pressing and most common health care challenges.

The research, published in the October issue of PLOS | ONE, tracked the preferences of primary care stakeholders in 13 countries to pinpoint the top ten research priorities. The study is the first of its kind to involve front-line clinicians and patients as well as researchers from across the world. "We know countries around the world face similar challenges when caring for their populations," says lead author Dr. Braden O'Neill, Family Physician at North York General Hospital and Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto, Department of Family and Community Medicine.
