Fry up some chicken this weekend, crank up the polka music, and pretend you're at a church picnic!...until we can all polka on!

Coming in May: Social distancing means no social dancing. Our cover story looks at how the COVID-19 pandemic is affecting the Texas music scene. Gary E. McKee concludes his feature on Lawrence Welk and proves the bandleader was a pretty cool guy. Justin Everett reviews music of Darrel Appelt, who also happens to be the subject of his DJ profile. Of course, we have your May calendar of dances, festivals, and live music events. Please check venue and organization websites and Facebook pages to see if events are still on. Also check the calendar on polkabeat.com, which is updated daily. Publisher Theresa Parker also announced that Texas Polka News will go to an every-other-month publishing schedule due to lost ad revenue from canceled events. There will be no June issue. The July issue will be published the week of June 22.

WEEKLY LAUGH
More stay-at-home humor:

Just saw a burgler kicking his own door in.
I asked him what are you doing?
He said "working from home."

I know I've been eating too much, so this morning I weighed myself. The scale notice read, tell the other guy on the scale with you to get off the scale. Don't you know there is social distancing?

Got up this morning and ran around the block 5 times.
Then I got tired so I picked up the block and put it back in the toy box.
