Weekly Update
April 29, 2020
From the President's Office

Dear Families,

As we transition into May, we move into a month when we honor our Blessed Mother, Mary, in a special way. During our time away from each other these past six weeks, I've found myself recalling memories of our campus and its beautiful spaces. What comes to mind with May Day this Friday, is the grotto in our quad - with the Blessed Mother looking out over our school.

This image is a physical reminder of the love, care and protection the Blessed Mother provided for her son, Jesus - and that she does the same for us and for our Brave Community. I pray we can use this month of May to draw closer to this loving care of Mother Mary and her Son.

In the life of BBHS, May is a month also filled with special milestones and traditions for all students, but especially our seniors. We are hard at work re-imaging these experiences, given the current circumstances. Thanks for your patience and understanding as we confirm important details and plans. We will share plans with seniors and their families this week.

Sincerely,

Tony DeSapio
President

COLLEGE DECISIONS
Traditionally, May 1 is the deadline for seniors to commit to the college of their choice. While many colleges have pushed this deadline back this year, we still want to honor your students and their commitment to higher education on this date.

If your senior would like to be featured on our social media accounts over the next few days, please have them (or you) DM the BBHS Instagram account @bishopblanchet their picture in their college gear...sweatshirts, t-shirts, pennants, hats! Please include the name of their college and also their preferred name for this shout out. This request was also emailed to students yesterday.

If your student has not yet decided where they are going, no worries! Just send in a pic of them sporting the gear of one of their choices.

BRAVES HELPING BRAVES - COLLEGE RESOURCE
Our Alumni network has come together virtually to support our current BBHS Juniors and Seniors navigating the college search and decision process, by making themselves available to answer questions about their college and university choices, majors and post BBHS experiences. BBHS Juniors and Seniors can access this database and reach out directly to alums. Many of the alums have written encouraging messages to the Class of 2020 and 2021; encourage your student to check it out. Do you have a recent Brave grad in your family that hasn't joined the database yet? They can click here to complete the short survey form. Thank you Brave Alums!

COUNSELING OFFICE DISTANCE LEARNING BULLETIN
Please check out the  BBHS Counseling Department's resources and updates for students and families. Our counselors are available via email and Zoom (video conferencing) if students have questions, concerns or just need a little help.

TESTING UPDATES
ACT
The testing scheduled for April 4, 2020 was rescheduled for June 13, 2020 by state mandate. There is also a July 18 date scheduled.

SAT
College Board update on April 23, 2020, regarding the SAT:
"We've added a new SAT administration for Saturday, September 26, 2020. This date will be for the SAT only, with no SAT Subject Testsâ„¢ available.

"Registration for the 2020-21 SAT administrations will open the week of May 26. At that point, June registrants will be able to transfer their seat to a 2020-21 administration. All other students in the high school class of 2021 who don't have SAT scores will also have early access to register for the August, September, and October administrations. This includes students who had registered for March or May and had their registrations canceled and refunded. For each administration this year, we're also preparing to significantly expand our capacity."

JUNIORS - COLLEGE CONFERENCES
Despite distance learning, college conferences for Juniors and their parents will still take place between March and May via Zoom video conferencing. Juniors received signup instructions soon from their counselor.

Parents and guardians are invited to these meetings: please speak with your juniors and have your student sign up for a time that works for your family. The goal of this meeting is to discuss the student's plan for their college search and application process, regardless of where they may be along this journey.  In the meeting, please be ready to discuss some of these topics:
  • possible majors or career interest areas
  • priorities for the college search (locations, majors, cost, size, etc.)
  • standardized testing plans and results
  • potential list of colleges
  • using Naviance in the college search process
  • one or two possibilities for teacher recommendations
