September 2019 Monthly Minutes
A Message from Child Care Aware of NH
Hello September,

Wow, the summer has flown by, and it is time for the "new" year. We have already started to roll out some of our opportunities coming for you this fall. Over the next couple of months, we have many great special events, conferences and professional development opportunities coming your way. Read through this e-newsletter and future ones to stay tuned in to what is happening with Child Care Aware of NH powered by Southern New Hampshire Services.

Child Care Resource and Referral Outreach Specialists have spent the month of August providing referrals to families, visiting District Offices, working with Workplace Success and doing community outreach. The Child Care Resource and Referral Outreach Specialists are already starting to think about the fall Provider Update. This update is smaller than the one we do in the spring but no less important. We thank you in advance for your help.

The Training and TA Specialists are ready to go. The 2019-2020 Annual Training Calendar was recently released. The Registration Window has been opened, and there is a fantastic line up of trainings coming all over the State. In addition this fall, we will provide two conferences and multiple special events. The Caring for Our Children Conference Brochure for Nashua has already been released, check it out below. Be on the lookout for more flyers and conference brochures.

In addition to our training season, Training and TA Specialists are ready to start back up with the 2019-2020 Early Childhood Leadership Collaboratives. Registration for all Collaboratives is now open. Please remember that pre-registration is required but note that you can attend any Early Childhood Leadership Collaborative in the State. New this year, we are adding an additional half hour of optional networking time to every Early Childhood Leadership Collaborative. Look below for more details on Collaboratives.

The Progressive Training and TA Programs and Early Childhood Cohorts for Emergency Planning and Strengthening Families are accepting applications. Look below for more details on both programs.

This year, CCAoNH is collaborating with the University of New Hampshire in partnership with the Bureau of Child Development and Head Start Collaboration on a new project, the “Best Practices in Action” Initiative through funds provided by the  Preschool Development Grant Birth through Five Initiative (PDG B5). This grant, from the Office of Child Care, Administration for Children and Families, US Department of Health and Human Services, aims to understand the State’s early childhood system and to create a plan to improve the outcomes for children, families, schools and communities throughout New Hampshire. Look for a special announcement soon on the  “Best Practices in Action” Initiative and what it will bring to the State to support the PDG B5's mission.

CCAoNH is expanding our services for the Best Practices in Action Initiative, and we have four NEW open positions: two  Kindergarten Play-Based Instructional Coach and two Environment Rating Scale Anchor. If you are interested in joining a dynamic team and making an impact on the early childhood world visit  https://www.snhs.org/jobs for more information.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for every thing you do for families and children. We hope that you enjoy this month's edition of Monthly Minutes.

All About the ITERS-3: A Training with An Author
On August 22nd and 23rd, providers came together to learn about the Infant/Toddler Environment Rating Scales. Participants became more familiar with the format and content of the ITERS-3, as they discussed how the scale requirements can be interpreted and scored. They also discussed how to conduct observations.
Website Redesign!
CCAoNH is redesigning the website. This site is the  Consumer Education Website for the Bureau of Child Development and Head Start Collaboration. With that in mind, the redesign for the new site will make it 508 compliant, which means it will more accessible to people with disabilities.

Here is what's new on our current site.
  • The Annual Training Calendar has been updated throughout the site.
  • We information and moved our Technical Assistance page to make it easier for you to find out more about the work that we do. Applications and flyers for the Progressive Training and TA Program, as well as the Early Childhood Cohorts are also on that page. You can now find it by hovering over the Provider tab, then clicking on the Professional Development tab. The Technical Assistance page will be the last button on the drop down menu.
  • Don't forget to check out the home page picture slides. We post current news there as well as hot topics. Make sure to scroll through the slides next time you are at the site.
Putting Training into Action
World Academy has successfully completed the Progressive Training and TA Program: NH Early Learning Standards. World Academy has taken what they learned from the Progressive and will be using the NH ELS as they observe children's learning and plan for the next stages of growth and development. The Standards will also be used as a guide to assist teachers as they create their student portfolios.
Sunrise Children’s Center has successfully completed the Progressive Training and TA Program: Infant and Toddler Team Initiative as well as the Early Learning Standards Initiative. The program has worked hard at implementing the Early Learning Standards into their planning and assessment of children. They have also gone above and beyond what is required in order to provide high quality care and learning opportunities. Way to go!!
Have you or someone you work with been inspired by a training? Have you implemented an idea, thought or concept you learned in a professional development opportunity? If you answered yes, share your stories with us. We would love to hear how CCAoNH trainings and TA have inspired your work. Send your story to outreach2ccrr@snhs.org and we will share your anecdote in our new Monthly Minutes section, Putting Training Into Action.

A Message from the Child Care Licensing Unit
We are excited to collaborate with Child Care Aware of NH to bring news from the Child Care Licensing Unit to the child care community on a regular basis through their e-newsletter, Monthly Minutes. Every month, we will strive to bring you information to increase your understanding of the NH Child Care Licensing Rules, and to share other resources to assist you in your work with and on behalf of children and their families. We will also use this space to share any important announcements as they relate to Child Care Licensing Unit (CCLU).
Here are the topics in the September CCLU message.
Click here or on the button below for the full message.

  • EXCITING NEWS! CCLU was fortunate to have an intern who created a video on how to complete the background check process.
  • The next phase of the criminal background check process will be to incorporate a CRIMINAL registry check in each state an individual resided in the previous 5 years.
  • To be fully compliant with federal requirements, by January 1, 2020, CCLU needs to include in the Child Care Licensing rules that staff may not begin working in child care until at least their state and FBI fingerprint checks have cleared. If the individual also needs background checks in other states, then they can work under the supervision of someone whose checks have cleared until all their checks have been completed.

Stay Ahead of Pertussis

The fall feel is in the air! Cool morning temps and leaves starting to change. The kids are back at school and so is Pertussis.

Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, is an extremely contagious respiratory infection caused by the bacteria, Bordetella pertussis. It can be especially serious and even fatal for infants. Unfortunately, many people who spread it may not know they have it. Infection can occur throughout the year, but in North America, its activity peaks in summer and fall. The classic sign of pertussis is a "whooping" sound made at the end of an episode of violent coughing, giving the common name of "whooping cough." The Chinese name for pertussis is "the 100-day cough," which describes the duration of illness, since it often lasts up to 10 weeks or more.
Key Facts about Pertussis (Whooping Cough)
  • Most commonly occurs in preschool/school-age children, though it can infect any age group.
  • Most serious and potentially fatal in infants.
  • Usually starts with cold-like symptoms followed by persistent harsh cough, fits of coughing and a whooping sound.
  • Gradually resolves over several weeks to 3 months or more, regardless of therapy.
  • Pertussis is preventable by vaccination. Routine childhood vaccinations greatly reduce the chance of infection in infants and children.
  • Immunity decreases with age. It is recommended that all persons age 10 and above get at least one "booster" vaccination.
  • Pregnant women should receive a dose with each pregnancy to provide protection to her baby.

So make sure that you and the children you care for are properly vaccinated against Pertussis. For more information about Pertussis and the vaccine that prevents it, please visit our website at https://www.dhhs.nh.gov/dphs/immunization/index.htm
