CLEANTECH POINT OF VIEW
North Carolina's Cleantech Industry is Growing Fast
By Elisabeth Greenbaum Kasson, Dice.com
Clean technology companies (also known as “cleantech”) have become such significant economic drivers in North Carolina that the industry added 8,000 full-time jobs across the state last year. In fact, the rate of hiring for cleantech, which includes everything from renewables such as solar to efficient energy-grid upgrades, grew 31 percent between 2015 and 2016.
Triangle Tech Could Help Rebuild Puerto Rico
By Matt Abele, Research Triangle Cleantech Cluster
It’s been nearly three weeks since Hurricane Maria devastated much of the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico and things still don’t appear to be getting much better. U.S. citizens across the island still do not have access to some of life’s most basic necessities: food, clean water and power. By some estimates, nearly 90 percent of the island is still in the dark with little more than a glimmer of hope that power will be restored any time in the near future. How is this possible and what will it take to prevent a crisis like this from occurring again?
Disruption Ahead
By Stephen Wood, Itron
Thomas Edison would have no trouble recognizing most of the component parts in any electrical generation and distribution network today. The technology that made the electrical utility cutting edge in the late 1800s is still an optimal solution. But, that is changing quickly. Electrical utilities are on the cusp of a disruptive redesign. When this is done, what emerges will have more in common with the Jetsons than with filament light bulbs.
