A chill is in the air ... finally!

This Fidra hat (designer: Gudrun Johnston), a new shop sample, was a quick and satisfying knit with Quince and Co.'s Osprey. We're ready for fall knits!

The Breton Cowl by Antonia Shankland, Cheryl tells us. In her words:

The calendar page said SEPTEMBER. That means fall with winter following close behind. My husband and I were getting ready to leave for our vacation and I needed an easy project, but my knitting mojo had waned a bit so I hoped for something fun too.

I found a group of three patterns from Mason Dixon Knitting Field Guide No. 1-Stripes. All three patterns appealed to me, but only one was reasonable for a travel project ... circular needle, not too much yarn to pack and a fun technique to play with. The Breton Cowl has been a pleasant and quick project with just enough of an interesting bit thrown in. I went into my stash for the main color and then used a mix of Kidsilk Haze, old and new, to work the welt stripes in multiple colors. I'm almost finished with the first cowl and making plans for a second one. I think I found that mojo that I was missing!

Come to Heavenly Yarns and learn the simple magic of needle felting by creating your own holiday "pin-ament" (pin/ornament) on Saturday, October 27, 9:30-noon. 100 Knits, a new book from Interweave, is an amazing compilation of one hundred of Interweave Knits magazine's most-loved knitting patterns over the years. Every kind of project is here, from socks and shawls, hats and cowls, to a large selection of sweater patterns: Cardigans, pullovers, tanks and tees are all represented.

The 9th Annual KnitMaine-ia Fashion Show will take place on Saturday, October 13, at 2 pm at the Belfast Boathouse. Tickets are $12 and are available at the door.

KnitMaine-ia celebrates diverse fiber arts traditions with hand-knitted, crocheted and felted garments, both modeled and displayed. Live original music. Door prizes and reception. Silent auction plus all proceeds benefit New Hope for Women. This year's theme: Fairy Tales.

On October 6 at 1-5 pm, at Waterfall Arts, Jackie Ottino Graf will offer Fall Indigo Social for age 15 and up. Cost: $90.

Dyeing with indigo has a long history, dating back to at least 2500 BC. There are many methods and techniques for using indigo. In this class, you will learn how to make a concentrated stock, and use it to add beautiful layers of blues to your fibers. Topics covered will include proper procedure for working with indigo, making a vat, and how to "read" a vat and adjust it for proper dyeing conditions.

Jackie will provide a set of four cloth napkins and a silk scarf for participants to experiment with. You may also bring up to 1 pound of clean (washed prior to the class with detergent) yarn, unspun fibers (bring them in a mesh bag to dye in), fabric ... anything you would like to dip in the vat! Indigo also reacts wonderfully over previously dyed fibers; consider faded clothing or ho-hum dye jobs.

Wear clothing that you don't mind getting dirty, or bring an apron. You will also need a long pair of rubber gloves, such as dishwashing gloves, and a package of clothespins (the clampy kind). Optional: any resist materials to imprint on fabric (mason jar lids, CDs, marbles, rubber bands).

Jackie Ottino Graf of Forage Color is a fiber-holic and a natural dyer. She loves spinning and knitting, chemistry, and coaxing bold, striking colors from natural materials.

The Belfast Area Chamber, The Republican Journal and Our Town Belfast are hosting a Candidates Forum for the state senate race at the Crosby Center on Wednesday, October 3, at 6 pm. The evening will be a moderated question-and-answer session with the two candidates on the ballot for the Waldo County State Senate (District 11): current State Representative and Majority Leader Erin Herbig and past State Representative Jayne Crosby Giles. So You Can Sing!, a singing and karaoke competition fundraiser to benefit three nonprofits, will take place on October 6, 10 am-4 pm. The competition will be held at Belfast Area High School to raise funds for Habitat for Humanity of Waldo County, The Waldo County Woodshed and No Greater Love food pantry. The competition will include categories for children ages 5-14 and adults age 15 and up.

There will be singing competitions, celebrity judges, karaoke, prizes, food concessions, raffles and a silent auction. Come to compete, or just join the excitement.

The annual Belfast Poetry Festival marks its 14th year with a full plate of ways to celebrate poetry, community and artistic possibility from Thursday, October 11 to Saturday, October 13.

The festival events begin on Thursday, October 11 at 7 pm with a reading from the 3 Nations Anthology: Native, Canadian and New England Writers, which will take place at Waterfall Arts, 256 High St. (co-sponsored with Waterfall Arts). Poets include: Michael R. Brown, Leonore Hildebrandt, Sarah Murphy, Lee Sharkey, Ellie O'Leary, Karin Spitfire and Kathleen Ellis.

On Friday, October 12, A Conversation in Poetry with Belfast Poet Laureate Thomas R. Moore and John Rosenwald will take place at 7 pm at Left Bank Books, 109 Church St.

On Saturday, October 13, 10-10:45 am, there will be a welcoming coffee and tea at the festival headquarters at the Crosby Center, 96 Church St. The workshops run from 11 am-2:30 pm, and at 1:30 pm there will be a pop-up reading open to all who want to read. Sign up at the door.

On Saturday evening, 6-8 pm the Poetry, Performance and Visual Arts Multimedia Showcase will take place at the Troy A. Howard Middle School, 173 Lincolnville Ave. The 2018 Featured Poets, Performers and Artists are: Tremolino; Gary Lawless and Elizabeth Sinclair; Katherine Hagopian Berry and puppetry troupe Inventing Trees; The Poets' Table: Jackie Ascrizzi, Sharon Bray, Shirley Glubka, Judy Kaber, Rhoda Neshama Waller; Becca Shaw Glaser and Suzanne Stone; Doug Rawlings, Terry Grasse and Robert Shetterly; and Adrian Blevins and Annie Kloppenberg.

The Belfast Poetry Festival, one of the few community-based, non-academic poetry festivals in the country, is in its 14th year of production with support from The Maine Review, Waterfall Arts, the City of Belfast, the Belfast Free Library and the office of the Belfast Poet Laureate.

The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, tells the story of the Salem Witch Trials of the 1690s, and is an allegory to the McCarthyism of the 1950s. This classic play will be presented at The Crosby Center, 96 Church St., Belfast, by the Midcoast Actors' Studio, on seven dates between October 26-November 4, with 7:30 pm evening performances and 2 pm Sunday matinees.
