Trek for Tech Funds New Technology
When hundreds of people take to the streets for a good cause, a great deal can happen.

Lakehill Preparatory School's 19th Annual Trek for Tech, the Parent Faculty Club's signature fall event, combined all the right elements: two great races, dedicated sponsors, enthusiastic volunteers, and a raffle with fantastic prizes. The results were a great time for all who attended, and a lot of money raised to purchase new technology.

Students, families, and faculty members put their best foot forward in the one-mile Fun Run, while a large crowd hit the pavement for the 5K chip-timed race.

Eleventh grader Jason Herron-Loza was the first place overall winner and top student finisher with a time of 19:59. Parent Christell Baum was the top female overall with 21:49. Seventh grader  Avery Owen  was the top-finishing female student, with a time of 24:32.

For some, racing was truly a family affair. Three generations of the Meyer family took part in the 5K race. Twelve-year-old Ellis Meyer claimed first in his age group and ninth overall, while his father Fred Meyer crossed just ahead of him in eighth place, claiming third in his age group. Racing in his first 5K, grandfather Herman Meyer , at 88 years young, claimed first in his age group. Mom Michelle also ran the race and joined in the fun.

Organizers report that 384 people registered for this year's races. The Trek Committee is still counting the monies raised through sponsorship, registration, and technology purchases.

The seventh grade won a Chik-Fil-A party for having the highest percentage of participation with 82%.

The Pasta Lunch, a carb-loading celebration, was held on Friday. Diners enjoyed pasta and pizza, sponsored by Guess Who's Coming to Dinner.

The Trek Committee thanks those companies, individuals, and families who supported the race through underwriting and equipment purchases, and the faculty, NJHS, and parent volunteers who helped the event run smoothly.

Lakehill thanks John and Karen Owen for chairing this event again and for their efforts in making Trek for Tech a huge success!

Terrific Teachers
Three outstanding Lakehill teachers were nominated for the Greater East Dallas Chamber of Commerce Teacher of the Year Award. Laura Stout (Lower School), Ellen Kufel (Middle School), and Tracy Herron (Upper School) were selected by their colleagues and peers to be Lakehill's nominees for this prestigious award.

Each year, the Chamber recognizes six teachers from the community who are making a positive impact in the lives of students and leaving an indelible mark on their school. Nominees must display excellence in professional practice, community engagement, leadership in professional development, and attention to diversity. Recipients of this award have made significant contributions towards innovative, unique, and novel programming.

Nominees and award winners will be recognized on November 14 at a Chamber luncheon in their honor. Congratulations to these outstanding educators.

Ellen Kufel was selected from nearly 50 nominees as the Private Middle School Teacher of the Year and will receive special recognition at the ceremony.
Art Teacher Creates for a Cause
A unique aspect of Lakehill's fine arts program is that all of the school's visual and performing arts faculty are working artists in their fields. Their professional experience and the exposure it provides serve as a major benefit to the students they teach. Many of their works of art also benefit our local community.

Lower School art teacher Sacha Troxler was recently selected as a featured artist at the Art for Advocacy event benefiting Dallas Children's Advocacy Center. The event, held on November 4, featured a seated dinner with live and silent auctions showcasing work from approximately 100 local and regional artists. Troxler's painting, entitled Quiet Waters, was purchased for 150% of the listed value.

"I get inspiration from my students' creativity and ideas, just like I would collaborating with professional artists," said Troxler. "They are amazing young people with huge imaginations."

Fourth grade student Elisa Hayden had wanted a painting of water, and Troxler had been wanting to experiment with a technique known as swiping. "I was inspired to learn the swiping technique used in Quiet Waters to work on the commission piece I donated to the auction."

Troxler was also selected as an artist to participate in Art Con 13. Art Conspiracy is a nonprofit community that conspires to bring artists and musicians together, raise funds, and activate awareness for regional creative programs and causes.

On Saturday, November 4, more than 120 artists gathered in the morning at the Cedars Union building on South Ervay Street, a warehouse-turned-art studio, to create their unique works of art. Artists were given until 10:45 p.m. to finish their pieces. Provided with only an 18 x 18 plywood board, artists were required to bring all of the materials they needed to create their art on site.

Photos of the artists and their completed works were taken. There are asked not post any photos of their pieces until the event.

Art Conspiracy chooses a new beneficiary each year to receive the proceeds of the event, which attracts an average of 2,000 attendees. The original creations will be sold in fast-paced, high-energy auction on November 11, while local bands play on the Art Con stage. Find out more and buy tickets to the event here.

November 11-12
Upper School Musical: Camelot
Lakehill's talented musical theater students will bring the beloved classic Camelot to the Lakehill stage on Saturday, November 11, at 7:00 p.m., and Sunday, November 12, at 2:00 p.m. A preview of the musical will be performed for students on November 10, at 8:45 a.m.

Borrowing from the Arthurian legends, Lerner and Loewe's Camelot triumphed on Broadway in a legendary original production which led to a film version, and numerous revivals in New York, London, and across the globe.

An idealistic young King Arthur hopes to create a kingdom built on honor and dignity, embodied by his Knights of the Round Table. His ideals, however, are tested when his lovely queen, Guinevere, falls in love with the young knight Lancelot, and the fate of the kingdom hangs in the balance.

The performance is suitable for all ages.

Tickets are available online and at the door.

Senior Spotlight
National Junior Honor Society Highlights Lakehill's Soon-to-be Graduates

In an effort to reveal the hidden talents, personalities, and accomplishments of Lakehill's most experienced students, the National Junior Honor Society presents:

NJHS Spotlight on Seniors
This week's senior: Jacob Besser
Jacob Besser has attended Lakehill for two years. His favorite classes have been American Literature with Mr. Jones and Digital Film Making with Mr. Guerra. He enjoys participating in Choir, Film, Yoga, and Drawing. He is a part of the Sticker Club and the Warrior Alliance. He also loves musical theater, portraying Mr. Mushnik last year in Little Shop of Horrors , and Pellinore in this year’s musical, Camelot .

When Jacob looks back at his memories of Lakehill, he remembers his first day of school, and how he couldn’t figure out how to open his locker. When Vanya Suchan helped him open his locker, they became the best of friends. “My Lakehill experience has been so enriching, I couldn’t possibly divulge all my favorite memories.” Jacob is proud that he was nominated for the Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass Scholarship for Rochester University. He also volunteers in the community by working with teenage education through Dallas’ Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas. Jacob loves to play music and one of his greatest inspirations for music and creative arts is David Bowie. Jacob also enjoys camping and backpacking.

Jacob plans to study Advertising and Film in college. His career plan is to eventually work as a creative director in advertising.

Jacob’s brother, Max, has had the biggest impact on his life. It was especially important for Jacob to grow up with someone who sees the world differently than he does.

Jacob’s advice for younger Warriors is that they should never forget to have fun, and that they should learn Yiddish, to keep the language alive. The greatest lesson that Jacob has learned at Lakehill is to express himself without worrying what the world thinks of him, or, as he would say, "At the end of the day, we are all just a jar full of clams."

Varsity Football
The Varsity Warriors football team ran its season record to seven wins and two losses and its district record to 2-0 with a 75-44 victory over Rockwall Heritage Christian.

The Warriors were led by senior Gerard Franklin. He threw for two touchdowns, ran for 148 yards and four touchdowns, and caught one pass for 15 yards, plus had an interception on defense.

Avery Meiteen and Ryan Henry each caught a touchdown pass.  Warren Lester, Ben Palmer, Ryan Henry, and  Gaige McKnight each had a rushing touchdown.

Defense was led by Palmer‘s 11 tackles, five of which were for losses. Jonah Shaw had 10 tackles, Lester and Henry had seven tackles each. Senior Jonathan Kelley was 5–7 on extra points and had several good kick offs.

On Friday night, the Warriors play for the District Championship against the Dallas Lutheran Lions at 7:00 p.m. The Warriors have already secured a home playoff game for the first round.

Middle School Football
The Middle School Football team ended the season with a heart-breaking 59-58 loss to Rockwall Heritage. The Warriors trailed most of the game, but battled back on many occasions, and didn't take the lead until there was only 1:30 left on the clock. The Warriors could not hold the lead, however, as Rockwall scored on the last play of the game to tie it 58-58, and won on a one-point conversion with time already expired.

In the first half, Rockwall seemed to have control of the game, and led by two scores early. But Lakehill was able to stay close with touchdown runs by eighth graders Brett Peacock and  Charlie Borowczak, and a recovered onside kick by eighth grader  Mitchell Crow.

The Warriors kept it close in the second half, but with only 2:30 left in the fourth quarter they trailed, 52-42. The Warriors then drove the field using a no huddle offense they had not used all season. Quarterback Alex Dondis was able to hit some nice passes to  Cullen McCaleb and  Jaden Lambert. The team scored when McCaleb caught a pass near the goal line, was hit and fumbled it into the end zone, and  Henry Hopkins jumped on it for a touchdown. After Hopkins made the PAT, the score was cut to 52-50.

All Heritage had to do was run out the clock, but Lakehill forced a fumble and McCaleb was able to recover. On the very next play, Dondis threw a pass down the middle to Peacock who caught it, broke a tackle, and scored to give the Warriors the lead, but they could not hold on. The Warriors finished the season at 7-2.

"This is one of the best games I have ever been a part of," said Head Coach Denver Bowden. "I could not be more proud of these players for the heart and determination they showed."

Varsity Crew
Lakehill rowers with White Rock Rowing and Dallas United Crew competed on November 4-5 at the Head of the Hooch Regatta in Chattanooga, Tennessee. More than 200 teams from 26 states and four countries competed in the 5,000-meter (3.1-mile) head races on the Tennessee River.

The Head of the Hooch is one of the world's largest rowing regattas, with more than 9,000 athletes in 2,000 boats racing over two days. With 1,200 boats competing on Saturday alone, more in one day than any other regatta, they must start a boat racing every 15 seconds to finish all the events before the sun sets.

Connor Alexander finished second out of 63 in the Men's Youth 4x and 13th out of 94 in the Men's Youth 2x. Anders Ekstrom placed 13th out of 88 teams in the Men's Youth 4+ and 13th out of 76 in the Men's Youth 8+. Posting times within 10% of the top boat in each event, Ekstrom and Alexander earned their teams two guaranteed entries each in next year's Hooch.

Both clubs are wrapping up a successful Head Race season. They will continue practicing all winter, preparing for the S.W.E.A.T. indoor competition at Jesuit in February and the spring Sprint Race season.
