Students Honored by Board of Education

At the May 14 virtual Board of Education Meeting, the following students were recognized for their outstanding achievements:

ALVARADO FCCLA CHAPTER HEADED FOR NATIONALS

The Alvarado Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) students competed at the National STAR regional level competition that included 12 contests and more than 100 attendees. Allison Cho and Mikayla Wilkes won first place in the Event Planning contest. The students raised almost $2,000 at their event. Natalie Munoz finished second and Jackie Xie finished third place in the Salad Preparation competition. The students had to each create a salad which contained a root vegetable. All of the students have qualified to compete in the national level competition in July. Congratulations to the Alvarado FCCLA students and their advisor, Doreen Lucero, on their outstanding accomplishments.

Rowland High FCCLA State Superior Chapter

The Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) State Leadership Conference was held via Zoom this year. The event started off great and just got better! Our very own Rowland High School FCCLA Advisor, Tracy Taylor, was the recipient of the Outstanding Advisor Award – Gold level! She was one of seven advisors nominated by the student State Officers and selected by an advisory committee. She was also awarded the Region Star Advisor award, one of seven in the state! The FCCLA Chapter at Rowland High School was awarded the State Superior Chapter Silver Award. The following students won first place awards in their selected areas: Joreen Li and Yirena Wu for Event Management Andrea Dela Victoria for Focus on Children Natalie Saelao, Vivian Lau and Pauline Kim for Sports Nutrition Two Senior State officers - Sophia Htay and Diane Chen, each won a $900 scholarship for their work and commitment within FCCLA over the past six years! We are extremely proud of these two seniors who have worked tirelessly over the past two months to reorganize and coordinate as presenters at the Zoom version of the State Leadership Conference that hosted over 900 middle and high school students.  They are wonderful young ladies with so much grace and kindness and have a bright future ahead of them. They truly epitomize the Rowland Raider Goals of Thinkers, Contributors and Communicators. The Board of Education congratulates both the Alvarado and Rowland High School FCCLA teams for their outstanding accomplishments this year .

Rowland High School FCCLA Advisor Tracy Taylor receives Outstanding Advisor and Region Star Advisor Award, and the team was awarded the State Superior Chapter Silver Award.

DISTRICT DEBATE TEAM SCORES! The Debate Teams representing Rowland Unified included 5th through 8th grade students from Blandford, Killian, Shelyn, Yorbita, Oswalt, Telesis, Ybarra and Alvarado. All students attended debate practices all school year in preparation for six scheduled Saturday competitions, three of which were completed before the school dismissal. Debate students did independent research to prepare to debate for both opposition and proposition for numerous debate topics. It is with great pleasure and appreciation to acknowledge our students who represented Rowland Unified in the Orange County and Inland Empire Debate Leagues.

Rowland High ProStart Team Wins $15,000 in Scholarships The Rowland High School ProStart Innovation Team won third place in the California ProStart Cup Virtual Competition. The team, consisting of five students, will receive $15,000 in scholarships. They created a drone food delivery system called Speedy Eats. The students researched and worked on their project from October of 2019 through April 2020. When their time was cut short with the school dismissal, they didn't miss a beat. They continued to meet via Zoom and Google to persevere through the challenges of the pandemic and modify their project to fit the new virtual rules. Congratulations to the ProStart Advisor, Kathy Stella and her students, Miles Martinez, Stevie De La Fuente, Lucas Martinez , Valerie De La Fuente and Sharon Kim on their amazing accomplishments.
