Weekly Disciple
May 31, 2019
Join us for worship this Sunday!
Luke 24:44-53
44 Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you—that everything written about me in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms must be fulfilled.”  45 Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures,  46 and he said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Messiah is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day,  47 and that repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.  48 You are witnesses of these things.  49 And see, I am sending upon you what my Father promised; so stay here in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”
The Ascension of Jesus
50 Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and, lifting up his hands, he blessed them.  51 While he was blessing them, he withdrew from them and was carried up into heaven.  52 And they worshiped him, and [ d ]returned to Jerusalem with great joy;  53 and they were continually in the temple blessing God.

Romans 16:1-16

Greet my beloved Epaenetus, who was the first convert [ b ] in Asia for Christ.  Greet Mary, who has worked very hard among you.  Greet Andronicus and Junia, [ c ] my relatives [ d ] who were in prison with me; they are prominent among the apostles, and they were in Christ before I was.  Greet Ampliatus, my beloved in the Lord.  Greet Urbanus, our co-worker in Christ, and my beloved Stachys.  10 Greet Apelles, who is approved in Christ. Greet those who belong to the family of Aristobulus.  11 Greet my relative [ e ] Herodion. WHAT MUST I DO TO BE SAVED? Point 2: You Can Reject God’s Plan for Your Salvation
Our email Bible study will now examine the scriptural support for the idea that some people reject God’s plan for salvation. Why? And what is God’s response? Wesleyan doctrine teaches that God’s grace makes salvation freely available to everyone, but the same grace gives us free will. Consequently, we can reject salvation if we so choose, although this option is  not recommended ! Pick up a study guide in the Welcome Center, or email Regina Hunter, drhunter@nmia.com, for daily readings and study tips.

FIRE ALARM INSTALLATION
Over the course of the approximately 11 weeks required to complete the installation the plan is to never leave the church unprotected. All areas of the church will be affected, and activities during the workday will have to accommodate the Heights Security System workers. Heights is making every effort to minimize impact on church activities. During the first 8-10 days of the installation spools of cable will be coned off in the halls.

WAYS WE CAN SERVE
See what’s happening in June for missions at St. John’s! Come by the Hospitality Center to pick up your copy.

JUNE SPECIAL OFFERING: Hopeworks and Mobile Food Pantry
June is the month to focus on feeding the poor. Chef Tim with a crew of volunteers take a meal for 200 to Hopeworks (formerly Project Share) ten times a year. Wonderful meals complete with some of Tim's great desserts! We need to raise $300 per meal. Secondly, every third Saturday Road Runner Food Bank delivers food for fifty families, which many volunteers set up and distribute. Many of the same families come each month and have become friends. Some stay around and help too. Last Christmas the children joined with St. John's kids in making gingerbread houses. Roadrunner asks us for $175 each month. So in June think food and please give generously!

MOBILE FOOD PANTRY
Thanks to your continued generosity, we've been able to provide a "little something extra" to our Mobile Food Pantry guests these past two months. We'd like to continue this effort, throughout the month of June, by collecting rolls of paper towels to give to our guests. Wouldn't it be great if we could offer each household two rolls of paper towels? Please place your donations in the wire baskets located in the Hospitality Centers.

SILVER HORIZONS
As it strives to meet the needs of low-income seniors in our community, as well as the grandchildren who may be living with them, Silver Horizons is currently in need of granola bars or protein bars, canned meats (all types), dry pasta and pasta sauces, and powdered milk. If you can provide any of these items, please place your donations in the wire baskets located in the Hospitality Centers. Thank you!
