The City of Miami Mayor Francis X. Suarez & The Virginia Key Beach Park Trust cordially invited SOME OF THOSE WHO supported the official resolution signing of the recent unanimously approved City of Miami Resolution 19-0235, Item #5883 which authorized the request for the transfer of Miami-Dade County $15.5M in General Obligation (GOB) Funds and $5M in CDT Funds.
While the civic, social, and environmental characteristics of the Beach Park hold national, regional, and local significance, the museum will highlight the historical civil rights achievements of our local African American communities.

On behalf of Miami-Dade County Commissioner Xavier L. Suarez, Sonless Martin dropped off a Check in the amount of $125,000 allocated from District 7's discretionary office funds in support of our Railroad Renovation Project.

Vegandale FoodFest Debuts in Miami
|
|
The BIGGEST VEGAN FESTIVAL took a turn in Miami this year, bringing nearly a 100 vendors with over 25 of them being from out of town! Vendors coming from California and New York brought the best of vegan food, drinks and merchandise.
Foodies enjoyed eating, drinking, shopping, and partying til sundown!! Vegandale brought items from all backgrounds and origins, with their vegan Cuban sandwiches, fried shrimp, fried chicken buckets, rainbow cakes, Waffles&IceCream and much more, ALL WITHOUT ANIMAL ABUSE!!

Virginia Key Beach Park Trust Volunteers at
Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery

Historic Virginia Key Beach Park and 10 volunteers came out on a rainy July 6
th
to help de-weed Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery. Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery is one of the Historic Black Cemeteries in Miami.
Notable people in the Cemetery Include Mr. Dana Dorsey, Miami’s first black millionaire and philanthropist as well as Ms. Gwendolyn Cherry, who was the first African American Woman to practice Law in Miami Dade County.
This de-weeding project is the first event of many that the Outreach/Volunteer Department will take part in. The park will be working with the FIU chapter of the American Society for Landscape Architects to take out the weeds and invasive foliage at the cemetery in order to bring Lincoln Memorial Park back to life.

Despite the weather conditions, the Party still went on! The sun still shined at the Historic Virginia Key Beach Park’s 74th Birthday Celebration on Saturday, August 3rd, 2019.
We want to thank all the guests, partners and visitors who joined the party, as well as Mr. Frosty 305 and Jackson Brothers Ice Cream for a wonderful event.

Activist Highlight: Sam Grant
|
|
Sam Grant is a faculty member at Metropolitan State University and a community organizer in the Twin Cities who has used his personal experience of racism and environmental injustice to fuel his lifelong work as a social activist. Grant co-founded AfroEco, a Minneapolis-based grassroots non-profit organization connecting sustainable food to cultural skills among African immigrants. He was a member of the Neighborhoods Organizing for Change coalition that defeated a Hennepin County proposal to increase garbage burning at an incinerator in their community, which led to City of Minneapolis composting and recycling initiatives. He serves on the Executive Committee of the Sierra Club North Star Chapter.

Treemendous Miami plants hundreds of plants
in our Heron Pond area

Treemendous Miami planted 255 plants in the Heron Pond Area. The plants were mainly trees and shrubbery to enhance the natural restoration areas with more foliage.
|
|
These plants are endemic or native to Historic Virginia Key’s tropical hardwood hammock ecosystem. Treemendous Miami has been coming out for over 15 years and have planted over 14,000 trees and shrubs at Historic Virginia Key Beach Park. There were a total of 25 volunteers that participated.

"If Seats Could Talk" Art Exhibition Dance Party

On July 31st, The Miami Design Preservation League Welcome Center located at 1001 Ocean Drive in Miami Beach showcased the “IF SEATS COULD TALK” art exhibition, featuring 12 re-imagined original seats from over 60 seats from the Miami Marine Stadium by talented South Florida local artists.
This was a joyful and fun dance party hosted at the Art Deco Museum for the current exhibition: "If Seats Could Talk: the Story of the Miami Marine Stadium".
There was Live Music by the legendary
Shack Daddys
with a Musical Chairs contest. The winner got a 2019 Art Deco Weekend poster prize!!!

On September 2, 2019, the non-profit organization S.H.E.A.R., Inc., Sharing Hope Empowerment and Reaction, will host the 16th Annual Friends and Family Day at Historic Virginia Key Beach (MAIN PAVILION).
The 16th Annual Friends and Family Day is a free event taking place at Historic Virginia Key Beach from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. at the main pavilion. Attendees can enjoy live music, magic shows, games, tournaments and giveaways, as well as snow cones, cotton candy, popcorn and more. Florida Hempfest 2019 aims to unite licensed professionals, respected vendors, and medical patients through the power of hemp.
This year, Floridians from all over the state will unite together at the Historic Virginia Key Beach Park to celebrate with special guest speakers from chefs that specialize in CBD, veteran activists, to neurologists and medical professionals in the cannabis field.
Dance to live music performed by Ganja Beach & The Click Band, browse a myriad of vendors, and a holistic village offering an array of hemp and CBD products, and enjoy tons of food from some of Florida's top food trucks.
