Staying Cool in the Heat!
|
Loaves & Fishes Cools Off!
Loaves & Fishes Gets
its First Air-Conditioning System
Diners arriving for a free meal at Loaves & Fishes of Tompkins County in downtown Ithaca this summer have been greeted with a welcome surprise - air-conditioning.
For the first time in its 36-year history, the soup kitchen in the social hall of St. John's Episcopal Church has been air-conditioned this summer. The cool air was not only a relief for patrons but also for the volunteers who prepare 140 lunches or dinners each day.
"It has proven to be a godsend during the recent heat," said Rev. Megan Castellan, the rector at St. John's. "The air-conditioning has allowed each guest to cool down, eat and feel like a different person."
The $30,000 project wouldn't have happened without the help of Sandy True, who learned last fall that Loaves & Fishes was requesting funding from Community Foundation of Tompkins County to install four commercial ceiling fans. (read more)

BOARD MEMBER SPOTLIGHT!
Linda Gasser Brings Wealth of International Experience to Community Foundation Board
Since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, Linda Gasser has worked with Cornell faculty members to help professors and business professionals in Central and Eastern Europe make the transition from Communist rule to a democratically free society through education.
But after 30 years of organizing human resources training in countries from Slovakia to Romania, Gasser is now working with communities closer to home as a member of the Community Foundation of Tompkins County Board of Directors.
"I'm at the point my life where I'm interested in giving back to the community, and this was an opportunity to think about where my funds might go, where my energy might go, and where my support for the community might go," says Gasser, who was appointed to the board in January.

Sequential Intercept Mapping
|
Collaboration Magnified!
A group of over 65 community leaders worked together for over a day and half to create
a conceptual model to inform community-based responses to the involvement of people with mental and substance use disorders in the criminal justice system. Using the Sequential Intercept Model, this collaborative group developed a strategic action plan with local priorities such as:
- Expand Affordable Housing for the Lowest Income People
- Increase the Community Outreach Worker Program
- Improve Inter-Agency Communication and Collaboration
Community Foundation collaborated with this dynamic, cross sector group, which engaged a wide variety of nonprofits, local government, law enforcement, health care providers and people with lived experience having navigated this complex system themselves.
The full report will be available soon. For more details, contact Dave Sanders, Tompkins County Criminal Justice Coordinator.
