Intergenerational Connections
Our ONEgeneration "Dinosaur" and "Leopard" preschoolers along with our senior "neighbors" recently had a fantastic time during one of our first ZOOM Intergenerational Programs! Children and adults were equally engaged with a myriad of music and movement activities. It's also noteworthy to mention that our participants did not hesitate to show off their best moves! At the end of our Zoom "IGP" session it was clear that our participants thoroughly enjoyed themselves as they kept on asking for "more"!

Dr. David Stern's Expert Corner: COVID-19 Update
Since the coronavirus is having a major impact on all of our lives, I will continue to provide up to date information about it. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has expanded its list of possible symptoms of the virus. Symptoms now include:

           Fever
           Cough
           Shortness of breath
           Chills
           Repeated shaking with chills
           Muscle pain
           Headache
           Sore throat
New loss of taste or smell

This revised list differs from the symptoms described by the World Health Organization on its website. The W.H.O. says that the most common symptoms are fever, dry cough, and tiredness. They also mention the presence of aches and pains, nasal congestion, sore throat, or diarrhea. Both agencies recommend that people seek emergency medical attention if they have trouble breathing or persistent pain or pressure in the chest. The C.D.C. also says that immediate medical attention should be sought if people experience sudden confusion, cannot be aroused, or if their lips or face turn a bluish color.

To this point, the known coronavirus death toll in the United States exceeds 50,000. Research continues to develop a vaccine and to identify treatment agents that could be used till a vaccine is available. There is now evidence that men are more likely to become acutely ill and far more likely to succumb to the illness than women. This clue has led researchers to try treatments with female sex hormones. Cedars-Sinai, Los Angeles, is participating in a study to see if such treatment will have any benefit. The response to the virus may reflect biological differences in immunity, as well as behavioral factors

For now, stay safe, continue to practice social isolation, wear a mask when outside your home, wash hands frequently.

Senior Resources CA, Inc.

Senior Resources, Inc., a senior care advisor, covering Los Angeles and Ventura counties in Southern California, helps seniors just like you throughout the greater Los Angeles area determine which independent living options best fit their lifestyle. Our goal is make your life healthier, happier and more independent.
How Do Seniors Shelter in Place without Feeling Alone or Isolated?
Dealing with the COVID-19 crisis is challenging enough for most of us who must stay home and shelter in place without the option of going to school, work, the golf course, the mall, or visiting friends or family, but seniors face even more obstacles. Many have underlying health conditions or suppressed immune systems that make them extra vulnerable to COVID 19, and are afraid that socializing will bring on those devastating health concerns. On the flip side, seniors are also among the most likely to feel cut off from family and friends. How can they avoid feeling desperate while keeping a social distance with others?

That seems to be the $64,000 question. And it is even more of a concern for those who live alone, about a third of the senior population, says the Administration for Community Living’s Administration on Aging. Whether they live independently or have caregiver assistance, drastic changes to their routine can be both physically and emotionally devastating.

The Health Resources and Services Administration, an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, found that social isolation and loneliness can be more dangerous to a senior’s health than obesity or smoking 15 cigarettes per day. Other research studies have reported:
  • Increases in heart attacks (29%) and strokes (32%) as well as ties to high cholesterol, diabetes, and dementia.
  • Elder abuse is more likely when others are not checking on a senior.
  • Financial scammers use a senior’s loneliness to their advantage.
  • Seniors still working or enrolled in daycare programs lose their ability to have that human connection.
  • A study by the AARP Public Policy Institute, Stanford University and Harvard found that Medicare spends about $6.7 million more on socially isolated seniors than it does on other seniors.

Encino Farmers Market - Open Sundays
Entrance gate (left) France Bakery Vendor (middle) Flower Vendor (right)
ONEgeneration's Encino Farmer's Market will be open Sundays from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM with modifications. Shop for local fresh produce in an open air setting.

We have received approval by the City of Los Angeles
to remain open with the following modifications:

Safety precautions that you will see at our Encino Farmers Market

  • Vendors and shoppers will be wearing face coverings.
  • There will be no sampling of products, or hot prepared foods.
  • Booths will maintain a distance between them, because of this you may find that the vendor you are looking for is in a slightly shifted space.
  • The tables, chairs and umbrellas will not be set-up to avoid lingering; we are asking customers to head home after purchasing their products.
  • There may be limits to the amount of a food product in high demand, such as eggs. Please buy only what you need, we will be back the following week!
  • There will be two gates open, one in the back of the lot as the entrance gate and the other as an exit only. You will not be able to enter the designated Exit. Please be kind to the volunteers.

Please keep the following in mind when you visit the market:

  • You must wear a face covering to enter the market.
  • If you are not feeling well or have recently been unwell, please stay at home.
  • Touch only what you plan on buying.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly before and after visiting.
  • Be respectful of others spaces, if there is a wait for a vendor please give room between you and the person in front of you.
  • Please limit socializing and head to the designated Exit when you are finished shopping.
  • Wash your fruits and vegetables when you get home, do not use cleaning products or other products not meant for consumption.
  • Please leave your dogs and non-service animals at home, they will not be able to enter.

Thank you for shopping at the Encino Farmers Market, supporting local farmers and small businesses, and helping the programs of ONEgeneration.

Did you fill out your census form yet?
Have you filled out the census yet? If you haven’t, you will likely be getting a census paper questionnaire right to your mailbox.

If you have taken the census in the past, you might have been expecting a paper form sooner. This year, paper forms were delayed in order to push people to respond online. If you do prefer to fill out a paper form, don’t fret! Your questionnaire will come in an official US Census Bureau envelope.

When you get your form, make sure you fill it out with a black or blue ink pen. When you’re done, you can send it back with the envelope provided by the Bureau. Easy, right? By answering a few simple questions, you are helping your community get the resources it needs for the next ten years.

If you need help filling out the form or would like to volunteer to make calls to our seniors about the Census, please reach out to ONEgeneration’s Census Coordinator: Juana Torres, at 818-708-6603 or at jtorres@onegeneration.org

Thanks!
