US Census Bureau Going Door-To-Door This August Through October
The US Census Bureau will soon begin address canvassing for the upcoming 2020 Census. This means Census employees will be going door-to-door in some neighborhoods to verify addresses and ensure the accuracy of their mailing list. All official Census Bureau employees will have photo ID badges as well as black canvas bags and laptops with the 2020 Census logo. Census employees will NOT be asking for personal or demographic information. They are verifying addresses, not conducting the actual census count which will occur in April 2020. Click here for more about the Census canvassing process and FAQs.
I have introduced an idea designed to remind drivers of the importance of driving safely on neighborhood streets.  They are  18" x 24" signs, red on one side and yellow on the other.  Let me know if you'd like one for your yard.

From Your Councilmember
This week's Council workshop had only one item on the agenda -- the proposal to sell Glendale Memorial Park Cemetery.  A lot of good information was relayed, and many good questions were asked.  For those of you interested in this topic I strongly suggest you watch the workshop, HERE.

In our voting meeting Tuesday evening, the agenda was long but most items were of a housekeeping nature and were passed on the consent agenda.  Unfortunately, the Council also decided to move the Public Comments portion of future meetings to the end of the agenda.  Generally, public comments take up about 10 minutes of our meetings.  I believe it is a courtesy to our residents to hear from them at the beginning of the meeting so they may get on with whatever else they need to do for the night.  Others felt it was a disservice to the business people who have items later in the agenda to expect them to wait while the public shared their thoughts with us.  Granted, it can be a bit embarrassing at times in that the public is not always complimentary in their remarks, but such is the nature of public service.  Better to have a thick skin and a soft heart than the other way around.

One bright spot on Tuesday evening was that we accepted a grant from Firehouse Subs of fifty (50) nozzles and tips valued at nearly $38,000 for the Glendale Fire Department.  These new nozzles will allow our firefighters to operate more efficiently and seamlessly with our surrounding municipalities, and to more rapidly and efficiently extinguish fires.  There are two Firehouse Subs locations in Glendale -- 57th Avenue and Northern and 59th Avenue and Thunderbird.  Feel free to stop by and express your appreciation for this generous and important contribution to our Fire Department.

Stay cool and hydrated!

Have a Great Weekend,
Bart Turner

Recycling Tip

All recyclables must be relatively clean, empty and dry. This does not mean to put them through a dishwasher. This is especially important during our current drought period.  An example of relatively clean, empty and dry would be: a mayonnaise jar that has been wiped clean of residue with a spatula or emptying a soda bottle completely in the sink. Both of those are clean and dry enough.
