Middle Schoolers prep for National Spelling Bee
Our Middle School will hold its level of the Scripps National Spelling Bee on November 30th in the library. Students will compete for their Houses--any student who is interested may participate! Roycemore's winner is then invited to move on to the regional-level spelling bee.

The Jetsons? No, Our Children!
One of my favorite TV shows when I was a child was The Jetsons, a cartoon show about a family circa 2062 and their daily lives. Watching the family get around "town" in their flying car and seeing their house get cleaned by their robot, Rosey, left me entertained by that possible future. Read more . . .

Our bank, First Bank & Trust in Evanston, is participating in the ABA Foundation
"Lights, Camera, Save!"
video contest to engage teens in educating themselves and their peers about saving and using money wisely. They're looking for creative, innovative student videos with unique savings scenarios! The entry period runs through December 1st.

The Social Cognition and Intergroup Processes (SCIP) Laboratory at Northwestern University (PI: Sylvia Perry, IRB STU00205846) is seeking parents and children between the ages of 4 and 12 years old to join their registry of potential research participants.
The studies are focused on children's changing attitudes about topics like social groups and categories, intergroup interactions, and social development.

Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood
Thanksgiving is a special time for many families to be together. It may even be the one time a year that certain members of the family get together. The idyllic family Thanksgiving celebrations of perfect meals, watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade, and cheering on your favorite football team is often held out as the goal, but sometimes holidays can be stressful. (For a giggle, watch National Lampoon's "Christmas Vacation" with Chevy Chase and you get the picture!) For parents, there could be stress around which side of the family to spend the holiday with. Then there is the stress just getting there on congested roadways. Young people might act out in front of members of the extended family because their normal nap routines have been thrown off due to the holiday and they might be a little more cranky than usual. Truth be told, often family members might be unaware of the things that are going on in their relative's lives and they can say things that can really get on one's nerves, or the time spent together can be surface and superficial--just another thing on the checklist of things we must do.
Roycemore School embraces Stephen Covey's
7 Habits of Highly Effective People
as a framework for character development throughout the school. In the Early Childhood and Lower School it is applied in an age-appropriate way as presented in "
The Leader in Me
." In the Middle and Upper Schools the framework is
"The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens."
The habits that are encouraged to be cultivated can be universally helpful for all of us. Habit #5, "Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood," is a great one to cultivate as we head into the Thanksgiving holiday and could be quite helpful in cultivating peace and understanding among family members.
This habit encourages us to listen--I mean really listen. When we listen to others with our whole being, we open up space for true understanding and for empathy. Often times in conversation, we are thinking more about the next thing that we want to say rather than really tuning in to the person we are talking with. Or we might be thinking, I really don't want to hear what my ____ (mom, brother, uncle, cousin...) is talking about--it has no relevance to me--I'd rather be doing _____. Ok, I was guilty of that just yesterday in a conversation with a family member. I was thinking, "I need to get off this phone call and get back to work." Writing my newsletter article for this week was one of those things on my "to do" list--how ironic! I hadn't yet picked the topic for the newsletter. Perhaps if I had written this article before the phone call I would have LISTENED to my own advice. In the haste of my busyness, I wasn't truly present for the call.
When someone feels that we are truly listening to them, they feel valued, appreciated and understood--and being understood is one of the deepest needs we have as humans. I invite you to join me in making an effort over this Thanksgiving holiday to be present--to slow down and listen. Seek first to understand. Where there is understanding, we create pathways for unconditional love.

The Roycemore Book Fair is December 4-8 in the library
This year, we will host a Follett book fair, with fresh new selections just in time for the holidays. There will be easy readers, independent readers, popular series, graphic novels and more.
The Book Fair runs the week of December 4th in the library, and visitors are welcome to browse during the school day and after school until about 5pm. We'll be open late the evening of Winter Program on Thursday, December 7 too. Perfect timing to get some of your holiday shopping done and support our library!
