The Kentucky Derby may be cancelled, but it won't stop me from wearing a hat! Pictured here, I'm donning my Cinco de Mayo hat, one of my favorites for the bright colors.
Do you know the story behind hats becoming a staple accessory for attending the Kentucky Derby? In 1872 Col. Meriwether Lewis Clark brought the famed Derby races from England and France to the US. He found a track in Louisville, KY and established the first Kentucky Derby.
To attract women to the event, Clark's wife invited the women of Louisville to attend and spend the day picnicking with friends. The dress code was "full morning dress" which meant women were to wear hats and gloves. Over the years fashion has evolved, but the desire for large brimmed hats has become a staple for this annual event.
So, join me this Spring and show off your best hat, even if it's just to enjoy the shade of you own yard like me.
