2019 PURA VIDA MINISTRIES ANNUAL GALA
Friday, November 1st at 6:00 pm

Pura Vida Ministries will hold a Benefit Dinner and Celebration on Friday, November 1st at the Lakewood Country Club in Lakewood, Colorado. The gathering will provide an opportunity to join in the celebration of the continued success of Pura Vida's Guatemala ministries.

The evening includes a reception at 6:00pm, dinner at 7:30pm, and a program presentation on Pura Vida's mission. There will also be a silent auction and time to mingle with others who've participated in Pura Vida's success.

Pura Vida Ministries is currently providing scholarships for over 350 children in several rural Guatemalan villages. Many of these students wouldn't otherwise have the opportunity to attend school. A significant number of these scholarship students are sponsored by families from this church.  Many of these students, who began sponsorship in primary school, are now enrolled at university. Pura Vida is extremely grateful for your support.

Work teams have provided many news homes and school classrooms for needy communities in Guatemala.  Our English Camp has just completed it's 6th year teaching English skills to students in communities near Chichicastenango.  Your church has been instrumental in the success via sponsorships, mission trips and financial & prayer support throughout Pura Vida's history.

Please join us November 1st to celebrate our shared accomplishments and hear more about plans for the future of Pura Vida ministries.

For more details about the event and to order tickets, go to  http://www.puravida.org/dinner , or Nickie Rounds at  [email protected]  or  (303)-632-8191.

DETENTION CENTER - CALL TO ACTION
To Our Church Family:

Members of the Church & Society Team at UMCE have been nudged by God to take action regarding the current situation within our country's detention centers. The most recent report issued by the Office of the Inspector General at the Department of Homeland Security on July 2nd, confirmed the conditions that have been cited in the news lately. (See https://www.oig.dhs.gov/sites/default/files/assets/2019-07/OIG-19-51-Jul19_.pdf )
The conditions at the detention centers have become a humanitarian crisis.
UMCJustice.org shares: "As United Methodists, we believe that God has given us principles for how to live in a community. Central to Jesus' teachings, life, death, and resurrection is the Great Commandment: we must love God and love our neighbors as ourselves. (Matthew 22:35-40; Mark 12:28-34) Much of the Bible is devoted to figuring out how to follow this commandment.
...We believe that in loving both God and neighbor, we must pursue God's command of justice, liberation and flourishing for all people. We must work for the civil and human rights of every person. "
We believe that children fleeing violence and poverty who are seeking asylum should be united with their families and sponsors while they await hearings on their cases, not taken away and imprisoned. But today, the U.S. government is holding thousands of children in detention centers across the country - and that number keeps growing."
Apart from being harmful to children, these policies are immoral and contrary to our Gospel mandate. The United Methodist Church has spoken out against them. It says, "We oppose immigration policies that separate family members from each other or that include detention of families with children." ( Social Principles, ¶162.H )

Because of our faith, The United Methodist Church calls for an immigration system that is rooted in the inherent worth, dignity, value and human rights of migrants. We advocate for the "elimination of indefinite detention, [and the] incarceration of children." ( Book of Resolutions, 3281 )" - www.umcjustice.org.

As such, we are encouraging members of our church family to let their voices, together with other United Methodists, be heard by those who can make a difference - our president and our representatives in Congress. UMCjustice.org has made this very easy to do. If you are inspired to take action, follow the link below to complete a short form, and emails will be sent to the president and all of your representatives.

With God's love,

Evergreen UMC Church & Society Team

ECHO SUMMER LUNCH PROGRAM

UMCE has been given the privilege again this year to prepare meals for the EChO clients and volunteers the last week in June, July and August. Our remaining dates will be August 26 & 29.

Last year we prepared food for approximately 400 people during the summer months, and received very sincere appreciation from EChO. The ECho lunch program was started in 2010, and since then five area churches have been taking part in this program from September through May. Last year was the first time the lunch program was continued during the summer months. For some people, this is the only meal they might receive that day.

If you would like to donate the needed groceries for this cause, please mark your contribution for the EChO Summer Lunch Program.  If you have any questions, please contact Ruthanne Huber at 303-870-7322.

Sunday Safety & Reasonable Planning

I know our Lord is weeping over the violence in our country and particularly over the senseless mass shootings in public and business settings which has become epidemic - without any real solutions on the table. While FBI statistics show that over the past 20 years there is a yearly average of only 1 such shooting {where 2 or more persons are injured} in houses of worship - among the roughly 400,000 worshiping communities in the US {translating into a .0004% chance in any given place of worship}, we want our church to be a place where all who enter feel safe and comfortable.

The Red Cross recently developed guidelines for public places such as theaters, schools, shopping centers, libraries, public streets, places of business, etc. -- including houses of worship. These are reasonable guidelines which can be adapted to small places of worship, such as our church.   The guidelines also help for other emergencies such as a fire or an unwelcome intruder who is not violent. The Red Cross focus is how to help yourselves and others when such an unlikely event occurs. Paying attention to your initial response and not waiting for group think or for another designated person to act {who might not even be present}. The mantra "If you see something, say something" is true for us here as it is in other settings. And in the cell phone age, call 911 when the situation calls for it.

In the unlikely event of an armed intruder, having each person already prepared by thinking about how they might respond is the most important approach statistics have shown. Not only is the response better, but it also helps override the natural fear response.   Every person has their own way to respond in times of emergency - and they ought to be aware of what kind of response they would most likely turn to -- such as "Flight, Fight, Friend {finding allies}, Freeze or Faint". Then, noticing what is available to assist them in the response {i.e. leaving through the nearest exit, throwing hymnals & chairs, blinding with a cell phone flashlight, turning a fire extinguisher on, finding a safe place to hide or laying down on the floor}. We are fortunate that those who designed our wonderful space created several outside exits in our sanctuary as well as in the rooms we use for our children's program on Sunday mornings.

Our Trustees & Church Council have been considering what our EAP {Emergency Action Plan} might look like. One consideration we deliberated on for some time was whether to lock the outside door near our offices while the services are going on, as well as having someone stationed at that door before services as people enter. At the current time, the reality of implementing this approach doesn't seem reasonable -- people then having to go to the sanctuary door with a high risk of ice in the winter; people such as the choir coming in during the services where giving out more door codes defeats our new protocol for that area; and our usher/greeter pool team is small, dedicated and good but they desire not to have these additional responsibilities.

We will be sharing more details around this on Sunday at a short safety workshop to be held 9:30 - 10:15 this Sunday in the choir room. We invite you to join us.

Blessings,
Pastor Deb
