Dear Friends,
Jesus's words in this weekend's gospel are confusing and maybe even upsetting if we only read them quickly or hear them briefly in church. He says he's come to cast fire on the earth, to bring a sword instead of peace, and he speaks of division and discord in families and relationships.
It's confusing and troubling to hear because at some point, we believed that following the Jesus Way would somehow make life easy, or make sense, or that Jesus will make all of our problems and questions vanish. This is not so. It is not so for us and it was not so for Jesus. In fact, Jesus speaks so directly in these passages because he is bearing the depths of his soul to his disciples knowing the trials that he himself must endure...but there is good news here...
As Christians and an human beings we know that our faith does not supply us with easy answers but we are gathering on Sunday at the beach for worship and a baptism with members and friends and guests of the Duffy family. And why do we continue to baptize people into a faith that doesn't promise us easy answers? We do this because of
our own baptismal promises, and the things they assure us of if we keep them by
respecting the dignity of all people, gathering faithfully together, and practicing acts of selfless service.
Jesus predicts that discord and division will persist but living our baptismal call is the key to being agents of healing, peace, and authentic Christian spirituality. As we gather at the sea on Sunday let us been deeply aware of the gift of our baptismal covenant which gives us no easy answers, but gives us to one another as strength and support in our own unique spiritual journeys. That's why we gather...and I hope you'll come, even if it's been a while.

A
lmighty God, you have given your only Son to be for us a sacrifice for sin, and also an example of godly life: Give us grace to receive thankfully the fruits of his redeeming work, and to follow daily in the blessed steps of his most holy life; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Adult classes will be bible-based taught by Karen Laroche
Children's lesson topics will include Episcopal practices, bible, and worship.
A monthly weekend fellowship and service project for teens is also being planned.

Financial Peace University is coming to St. Mary's!
Financial professional and St. Mary's member Michelle Freitas will be leading this 9 week series beginning September 9 - Nov 4th, Monday evenings at 6PM

Service Guild Update
The newly formed Service Guild @ St Mary's is continuing to look for ways to deepen our commitment to serving others. Part of this effort involves strengthening our relationship with the MLK Center in Newport to meet the needs of local families. As September approaches, MLK would appreciate assistance in helping to provide back to school items for children with a focus on those in Grades K-5. Teacher lists for students in these grades are available at Staples or see the list below for some suggestions.
We will collect items this weekend and for three additional weekends. You may leave items in the marked baskets in the entry to the parish house.

Community Garden Updates and Information
St. Mary's Community Garden is having a great season! New gardeners and Searose Montessori School have made our garden a great place to be! Come check it out.
Community support to local food pantries is well under way. Donation areas in the church kitchen are well marked in the fridge and counter. Home garden overflow is welcome! Please donate!

This Month's Food Donations for the MLK Center
For the month of August, donations of non-perishable proteins are requested as our focus: canned meats and fish, beans, nut butters, etc.
In the second quarter, St Mary's has donated 732 lbs. of food to the MLK center and to-date this year, 1371 lbs. Thanks to Jon Edwards for gathering this information!

We will prepare meatloaves for St Paul's soup kitchen. Dinner provided.
We are looking forward to an evening playing MANHUNT with dinner included and the upcoming schedule of service and fellowship opportunities for the fall semester. All youth--teens and tweens are invited

-COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS-
Millie Cozzens has served on the Altar Guild for 50 years!
For 27 of those years she has been the leader of this ministry.
She has decided it is time to retire.
Join our community and Millie's friends and family as we give thanks for her ministry and service on Sunday August 25th.
We will offer special prayers during worship at 9 a.m. and celebrate with her at a very special coffee hour.
Jon Walker's Egg Casserole Preparation (by popular demand!)
- 1 lb breakfast sausage (I used hot and spicy turkey)
- ½ small red bell pepper
- ⅓ white onion
- ½ small green bell pepper
- 1 lb frozen hash browns
- ½ cup sour cream
- ½-3/4 cup processed cheese, shredded
- Garlic powder (I used a few dashes)
- salt & pepper
- 4 eggs
- ¼ cup milk
- 1 cup cheese, shredded (I used a mixture of cheeses)
INSTRUCTIONS
- Preheat oven to 375
- In a large skillet cook sausage until browned. Place the sausage on paper towels to drain. Leave the fat in the skillet. (You may need to pour some of it out if it's a lot)
- Dice up the onions, green bell pepper, and red bell pepper.
- Add to skillet and sauté until just tender. ( It won't take long so be careful not to overcook)
- Place the sautéed veggies on a plate and set aside.
- In a large bowl add the thawed, hash browns.
- Stir in the sour cream until it coats the hash browns
- Stir in the processed cheese.
- Season with salt, pepper and garlic powder. I used just a few dashes. (Taste the mixture to make sure the seasonings are just right. Be careful not to over-season, since we'll also be using sausage and cheese)
- Spray a 9 inch deep dish pie plate with cooking oil and press the hash brown mixture into the pie plate getting it as flat and even as possible.
- Cover the top with sausage, onions and peppers. Set aside.
- In a small bowl beat eggs with milk.
- Pour the egg mixture evenly over the top of the casserole. (sometimes I'll use a knife to poke holes in the casserole so that the eggs mixture goes down further)
- Top with shredded cheese.
- Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for another 10-15 minutes or until the casserole is fully set. (See note below on cooking times)
- Let cool for 10 minutes and enjoy!
NOTES
Cooking times: I baked this in a 9 inch deep dish pie plate for 45 minutes covered and 17 minutes uncovered. You may need to adjust the cooking time so check it after 45 minutes. The
casserole is done when it is completely set and edges are golden brown. It should not have any liquid from the egg present at all and it should be fluffy and creamy, not runny or wet. ~TIPS~ Feel free to add in more things like bacon, broccoli, etc. Using a variety of cheeses is best! Yum!
Casserole should be FULLY set & fluffy when done. Nothing jiggling, wet, or runny!

Jennifer and the SMC staff and leaders will NEVER ask you for money directly via email.
You can always call or send an email to us if you are not sure. We are aware of the problem and this is part of the technology age in which we live and there is very little that can be done to stop this annoyance, but we should be mindful when opening and replying to emails always.
