October 17:   Hawthorne Elementary is excited to announce the grand opening and ribbon cutting of the school's Idaho Native Plants Learning Landscape & Teaching Garden from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Hawthorne has received numerous grants and worked with a handful of expert community partners on this three-year-long project, including $30,000 from the City of Boise Mayor's Neighborhood Reinvestment Grant as part of the Vista Neighborhood Association and the Boise Public Schools. October 24:  Certified New Applicant Orientation, 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Boise District Services Center, 8169 W. Victory Rd., Boise.  Boise is a high performing school district with nationally ranked schools offering a quality lifestyle in beautiful southwest Idaho. BSD is hosting a Certified New Applicant Orientation, geared towards first-time, certified applicants for BSD.  At the orientation, applicants will:

• Receive important information regarding the certified application
• Hear from current supervisors about what to expect for the screening interview
• Witness a "mock" screening

October 27:  End of First Quarter - Elementary K-6 No School. 

2017 Bond Projects Update: Thanks to overwhelming support from voters during the 2017 Bond Election (86% yes vote), work is well underway on a number of capital projects  - Timberline High addition, Amity Elementary Rebuild, Dennis Technical Education Center expansion/addition, and Boise High Old Gymnasium & Performing Arts Center Remodel (see photos below).  In October, work is also expected to start on the rebuilding of Whittier Elementary School (see project rendering below).  For additional information on these and other future capital projects, please check-out the Boise School District's 2017 Bond website.   

Amity Elementary School Rebuild:   Work to rebuild Amity Elementary School on the same site began during the summer of 2017 with an estimated completion date of August of 2018. The new school will provide a modern educational facility to better serve the needs of our students, staff members and our school community.  

Dennis Technical Education Center Addition/Expansion:  Work to expand the Dennis Technical Education Center began in July of 2017 with an estimated completion date of August of 2018.

This project is the result of working closely with industry representatives in identifying the need for upgrading and expanding job training programs at the Center to help students better prepare for future postsecondary and career success.

Construction of a new addition to the Center will provide upgrades to existing career technical education programs, technology and classrooms (technology, safety, space). The following current programs will be upgraded to better serve students and local industry partner needs:

Expansion of the Pro-Tech Center will also allow students to gain valuable skills with the addition of the following, industry-aligned job training programs:

Boise High Gym & Performing Arts Center:  Work began during the summer of 2017 to renovate Boise High School's old gymnasium, which was built in 1936 and now serves primarily as a space for physical education classes.  The renovation project also includes rebuilding the music building to better serve students by the addition and improvement of performing arts classrooms. This bond capital project is estimated to be complete by October of 2018 and when finished will bring one of Boise High's oldest building up to safe, modern standards.  

Timberline High Addition/Expansion:   Work to build an addition at Timberline High School began during the summer of 2017 and is estimated to be complete by August of 2018. When finished, the project will provide modern science labs and art classrooms that better meet the educational needs of students and staff members.

Whittier Elementary School Rebuild:    Work to rebuild Whittier Elementary School on the same site is estimated to start in October of 2017, with an estimated completion date of December of 2018.

When finished, the new Whittier Elementary School will provide students, staff and the school commuity with a modern educational facility to better meet the needs of today's and tomorrow's students.

The new Whittier Elementary School will help address current student overcrowding, improve student and staff safety, meet modern education standards, and honor the overall mission of the school.

Boise District School Calendar Proposal To Be Considered In October: In his latest Data Points  blog post, Boise School District Superintendent Dr. Don Coberly reviews the 2018-19 Boise District school calendar proposal that will be considered by the Boise School Board on October 9, 2017.  Data Points is dedicated to providing student achievement and education trend analysis and is intended for parents and patrons interested in an objective, data-driven look at student performance in Boise and across Idaho.  

Grace Jordan Students & Families Participate In Walk to School Event

Students & Families Enjoy Walk to School Event:  International Walk to School Day is a global event that involves communities from more than 40 countries walking & biking to school on the same day. It began in 1997 as a one-day event. Over time, this event has become part of a movement for year-round safe routes to school and a celebration - with record breaking participation - each October. Today, thousands of schools across America - from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico - participate every October. On October 4, 2017 Boise School District's Grace Jordan Elementary School participated in the Walk to School Day Event, along with Boise Mayor Dave Bieter and officers from the Boise Police Department.   

BSD College & Career Website:   Boise School District has improved its College and Career Website by providing useful information for students and families as they prepare their student for success in college and career. Find upcoming event information, links to useful resources, as well as a link to the BSD College & Career Twitter feed.

K-6 Report Card Re-Design:  To help prepare our students to be college and career ready, Boise School District has updated the K-6 report card. The new K-6 report card will now closely align to Idaho Core Standards in English Language Arts (ELA), Math, Social Studies, Science, Health & P.E. and Music.  The purpose of the report card is to communicate the student's progression towards learning goals, highlight strengths, and guide improvement. The District has published a Parent Guide To K-6 Report Card Re-Design brochure to explain the changes made to the new K-6 report card.  In addition, the District has created a K-6 Report Card Re-Design website to provide further information for parents and guardians. 

Timberline High Band Earns Recognition:  On Saturday, September 30, Timberline High's marching band and color guard competed at the US Bands Caldwell Invitational and received 1st place overall in their division as well as all the caption awards; best percussion, best color guard, best marching, best music, and best general effect. The band also received the top score of all 22 competing bands!
