A Message from the Children's School Division Director
Dear Children's School Parents and Families,

I am writing to you as we officially begin our year together at Back-to-School Night this Thursday, August 15. The teachers and I look forward to seeing you and beginning the 2019-2020 school year together.

I believe deeply in the capacity of your children. They will be learning, growing, and partaking in new experiences this year, and they each will do so in their own unique ways. Bearing witness to their discoveries, questions, curiosities, and ah-ha moments is a major part of the joy in this work. However, occasionally, we all meet with challenges where we need support. This reminds me of the three-legged stool.

As many of you know, I am a native of New England. While many farms have gone away, you can still see barns speckle the rolling hills of this region. A childhood memory of mine is listening to stories of my dad's work on Mr. Burr's farm. Among them was the story of the three-legged milking stool. Why three legs? Well, many of these barns had dirt floors. Hard-packed and uneven this earth provides the surface on which these structures stand. The three-legged stool can stand up and function on this uneven ground.

To me, the three legs represent the child, family, and school working together to support the development of the child, who is at the center of this relationship. Together, these three are in partnership to support the child as they navigate the uneven ground of learning and development. Our goal for the year is to stand together with you and your child as we navigate the 2019-2020 school year.

Here we go!
Sincerely,

Jody Bates Bliss
