CES kicked off the summer academic session with a Massachusetts Salt Marsh and Sea-Level Rise Workshop on May 6th at the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, led by Dr. Polsky and graduate research assistants Hallee Meltzer and Bridget Huston. Attendees included representatives from local environmental planning and consultant agencies, engineering firms, non-profits, and federal agencies, along with university students and scientists.

Researchers from the Woods Hole Marine Biological Laboratory, the University of Virginia, the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, the Center for Environmental Studies at FAU and Clark University presented updates about their NSF-sponsored study. The research study focuses on the Plum Island Ecosystem, which is the largest salt marsh in New England and touches Newburyport, Newbury, Rowley, and Ipswich. READ MORE.
FAU CES Neighborhood Resilience Research Study
Listening session was held on 7/15/2019 at Estates of Ft. Lauderdale
FAU CES researchers continued their efforts with Broward County's resilience mapping by beginning the FAU CES Neighborhood Resilience Research Study this summer. The study examines factors and dynamics that influence resilience to local environmental hazards, including flooding (tidal plus heavy precipitation plus storm surge), wind and heat at the neighborhood level in Broward County.

Our CES team held a listening session this summer with stakeholders in the Estates of Fort Lauderdale to identify leaders willing to address resilience issues, identify community assets and vulnerabilities, and initiate relationships that inspire community action and community involvement in the study.
Magic Leap Headquarters Visit
FAU faculty and staff at Magic Leap headquarters
CES' Dr. Colin Polsky and researchers Glen Oglesby and Jon Stonger joined FAU faculty representing disciplines and Colleges across the university to meet with Magic Leap representatives to discuss teaching and research opportunities and to demo spatial computing (SC) gear developed by Magic Leap at their Plantation HQ.  This effort was coordinated with help from several FAU Colleges, including Dr. Aimee Arias, Associate Dean for the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters.

Unlike virtual reality (VR) which isolates users from reality by presenting a virtual environment, or augmented reality (AR), which overlays a virtual environment on a physical environment, Magic Leap's SC technology provides an interactive integration with the real world.
Climate and Resilience Public Opinion Poll
CES began collaborating with FAU's Business and Economics Polling Initiative (BEPI) to administer surveys to assess Floridians' perceptions of climate change and associated resilience questions. CES and BEPI seek to understand how Floridians' perspectives vary over space and time in relation to ideological markers, socio-economic status, and lived experiences of exposure to heat, flooding, and hurricanes via the Climate and Resilience Public Opinion Poll.
Congratulations to CES Graduate Student Researcher
Hallee Meltzer & Dr. Colin Polsky
We would like to congratulate Hallee Meltzer, a CES graduate research assistant, who successfully defended her master's thesis, "Lawn Management from the Mesoscale: How communities shape residential lawn care in Baltimore City" on August 12!

Hallee has been instrumental with CES' NSF Multi-Scale Coupled Natural-Human Systems Dynamics of Nitrogen in Residential Landscapes Research related to lawn care, as well as the NSF Coastal SEES research.
CES Staff Honored at Annual Employee Service Awards
FAU recently held the Annual Employee Service Awards Ceremony honoring FAU employees for their years of service. We would like to congratulate CES' Associate Director Dr. John Baldwin, who celebrated his 20-year milestone anniversary, and CES' Budget Coordinator Charlene Hickson, who celebrated her 10-year milestone anniversary.
