Los Angeles County says massive sediment removal project is about to begin in Devil's Gate Reservoir
"A controversial four-year effort to increase flood protection for communities downstream of Devil's Gate Dam and restore habitat within the Hahamongna Arroyo Seco Watershed will begin later this month, County officials announced Friday afternoon. With all state and federal environmental permits finally in place, Los Angeles County Public Works will begin the process of removing 1.7 million cubic yards of sediment from the reservoir immediately behind the nearly 100-year-old dam." Health officials: wildlife, especially feral cats and opossums, driving Pasadena's typhus spike
" Urban wildlife is behind the epidemic-level spread of typhus reported in Pasadena, and keeping feral cats and opossums out of yards and away from people is the key to reining in the serious disease, health officials said. At least 20 people in Pasadena have come down with murine typhus this year, Pasadena interim spokeswoman Lisa Derderian said. While there's no vaccine to prevent typhus, it's treatable." Pasadena Now

Pasadena Police Department receives $380K grant
"The Pasadena Police Department has been awarded a $380,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) for a year-long special enforcement and public awareness program. The traffic safety program is intended to educate the public on safe roadway habits and deter people from violating traffic laws or practicing other unsafe behaviors that lead to injuries and fatalities." Pasadena Independent

"District faces wave of new cuts as unexpectedly lower attendance numbers explode spike budget reductions from $4.1 million to $10.1 million. The District is facing an unexpected estimated drop of 500 students in the current school year. The loss of State funds related to the smaller number of students has pushed the District's budget reduction target up to the $10.1 million figure." Pasadena Now

"Working together, PUSD has made significant and steady progress . Although no single assessment can measure the quality of a school, the progress we've made on state tests is exciting and affirming. The progress of our students is possible because of the work of the remarkable and talented teachers of PUSD, and I am grateful for their passion and commitment to our classrooms every day." Pasadena Now

"Hundreds of angry and saddened students, staff, parents, and teachers packed the Pasadena Unified School District Board chambers, overflow meeting rooms and hallways Thursday, while the award-winning Wilson Middle School Lion Drum Corps performed outside in formation in the parking lot."
