Ve Vant Your Blood!! | Fall blood drive 10/19, Auxiliary Gym from 8:45 a.m.- 2:45 p.m. (Closed 10:45-11:30). Donate blood and you will get a cookie and save 3 lives.The community needs you! The local blood center is struggling: many blood types have reached an Emergency level. High school donors make up 20% of their collection, so the success of the upcoming blood drive is extremely important. 

LIBRARY NEWS

Representation matters! At Ballard High School staff and students are actively involved in making sure all students feel welcome and seen. Our World Language teachers, Ms. Rodriguez and Ms. Lopez worked with the Spanish Club to create a Hispanic Heritage display for the school. A student in Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) created a display for National Coming Out Day to honor individuals who combat ignorance and silence and encourage self-affirmation. We appreciate all members of our Beaver Dam and want everyone to know they belong!

Making a Difference Foundation scholarship Attached is the 2018
scholarship application . The scholarship will be awarded to a student with financial needs and can be applied to room and board and is $1,500.00 renewable for up to 4 years. The   deadline is 10/15/18.   Questions? Contact  [email protected].

Elks Most Valuable Student Scholarship Contest  | This is a generous scholarship and they acknowledge 6 local students with at least $1,000. The Elks National Foundation will award 500 four-year scholarships to the highest-rated applicants in the 2019 competition.  Deadline is 11/15 . Click HERE for more information and to apply online. 

MOCK ELECTIONS
BHS Mock Elections | Ballard High is piloting an all school mock election this fall on 4 "real" ballot initiatives.  This is exciting stuff and it may be the largest mock election in school district history! King County Elections is publishing over 2000 Official BHS Voter's Pamphlets that will mirror the "real" pamphlets parents/citizens receive on about 10/15.  The pamphlet will help guide students through the learning process so they can vote wisely on 11/6 in their social studies classes. The initiatives are: Washington Taxes on Groceries Initiative The Carbon Tax The Police De-Escalation Initiative ; and the  Gun Control Measure Parents are encouraged to discuss the initiatives and help their kids learn how to vote!!! Take the ACT | Students (Juniors/Seniors) who wish to take the ACT, the next testing date is October 27 at Franklin HS, Nathan HS, and Seattle Central. 
SENIORS: The October test might be your last chance to take the ACT and get your scores back in time for college application deadlines.You need to register by Friday, September 28 to avoid late fees! To register, click HERE

ATHLETICS
Ballard Girls Basketball Mandatory Pre-Season Meeting | Monday, 10/29 from 3:45-4:15 p.m. in the Health Classroom NE116. If you are planning on playing or interested in playing for Ballard this Winter, you are expected to attend this brief informational meeting. Questions? PERFORMING ARTS

BHS Playmakers explore gender politics, love, violence, and migration in Big Love October 18, 19, 20, 7:30 p.m. curtain. BHS Earl Kelly Center for Performing Arts.  Several of today's most relevant cultural questions are broached in Ballard High School Playmakers' new production of the seriocomedy Big Love! Inspired by a classic Greek tragedy, Big Love follows the tale of 49 Greek brides who have fled to Italy to avoid marrying their cousins. The grooms soon follow-ready to claim what they consider theirs. You won't want to miss what happens next!  The cast  features 17 BHS students and the play is directed by BHS Theatre Director Shawn M. DIGITAL FILMMAKING PROGRAM 
Academy Nominates Ballard Film Students for National Student Production Awards!!  The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) has nominated students in Ballard High School's Digital Filmmaking Program for six National Student Production Awards. NATAS industry professionals and university professors selected the nominees from regional winners by students throughout the nation.  The awards will be live-streamed from the Los Angeles on Thursday, October 18 at noon, and will be hosted by television personality Tom Bergeron, star of AVC's Dancing with the Stars. Work at the Seattle Public Library -- APPLY NOW THROUGH OCT. 31 | Teens ages 16 and older are invited to learn about and apply to the Student Assistant Program at Seattle Public Library. Eligible students have until 5 p.m. 10/31 to apply. Click HERE for more information. The Student Assistant Program gives young people valuable work experience at the Library. Applicants must be enrolled in a school program, but may not yet have completed bachelor's degrees. Students accepted into the program may participate for up to three years, or until they no longer qualify as students. Hi Students! The undergraduate students of the University of Washington psychology major would like to invite you to a Free One Day Conference on our campus. This conference: Dive into Psychology with Diversity in Psychology (the Double DIP Conference), focuses on introducing diverse high school and transfer students to the field of Psychology and the Admissions process to the University of Washington. The Double DIP conference is on Saturday, November 10 from 9:00-4:30 at the Samuel E. Kelly Ethnic Cultural Center on the UW Seattle Campus. A light breakfast and lunch will be provided. The Interagency Academy Recovery School at Queen Anne is Seattle's only public "sober high school," focusing on helping students in their recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. The program is completely voluntary and very valuable for kids coming out of rehab, or those simply unable to stay sober in other environments. There is a full time drug and alcohol counselor on site and a complete academic program focused on credit retrieval and getting students to graduation. College Application/Admission Seminar: Thursday, 10/18/18, 7:00 - 8:30 pm, Free. Phinney Center, Blue Building, Room 6.  Do you have a teen preparing for college? Dr. Mark Hofer guides students and their families through the application and admissions process to identify the colleges that will best serve their academic, social, personal, and financial needs. Join Dr. Hofer at this free introductory talk for parents and college-bound high school juniors and seniors. No RSVP necessary.  Dr. Hofer received his doctorate in Education and master's degree in teaching from Seattle University. He is a graduate of UC Irvine's College Counseling program and is one of only four Certified Educational Planners (CEP) in Washington State. For the last ten years, he has been the college admissions advisor and taught leadership for the Bezos Family Foundation in Seattle. With other degrees in the sciences, Mark has also worked in psychology, physiology, biology, chemistry, physics, and aerospace research labs and has taught high school science and psychology.

Seattle Architecture Foundation 2018-2019 Youth Design Workshops |  Designed for youth ages 10-16, students tackle social, environmental, and engineering challenges. With an emphasis on conceptual issues and concepts, these workshops are perfect for older students. Hosted at local architectural offices and supported by SAF staff and volunteer architects, participants learn as they plan, build, and present solutions to imaginative and thought-provoking Design challenges.

Classes cost $35 per student or $30 for SAF Members.
