Message from the CEO: Clinical informatics "firsts"

Innovative, forward thinking and passionate! I'm so pleased to be able to introduce you to the founding members of HISA's Clinical Informatics Network announced below. Clinical informatics will underpin the evolution of digital health and this multidisciplinary group of health professionals are set to make a real difference to the way our health system works.  One of our strategic goals at HISA is to embed the right knowledge, skills and experience across the entire health sector to empower a digital health workforce.  I recently returned from the AMIA 2016 conference in Chicago where I was able to engage with many senior clinical leaders and discussed international links to foster collaboration between Australian and US clinical informatics leaders.

In another clinical informatics "first", HISA and NIA have been progressing a nursing informatics joint statement with the Australian College of Nursing (more on this as when we launch the consultative phase).  And stay tuned before Christmas for a public consultation document on the role of the CMIO/CNIO/CHIO/CXIO.  Meanwhile, the lively debate at our 5th   Innovating Health roundtable this week in Melbourne highlighted growing support for whole health system innovation. There are many challenges -  but we can be confident the conversation is changing and moving in the right direction.  There will be lots of opportunities for HISA members to get involved in leadership and contributing roles to advancing digital health in 2017.

Clinical Informatics Network leadership announced

After receiving overwhelming interest from clinical leaders across Australia and many outstanding candidates, HISA is proud to announce the founding leadership of Australia's Clinical Informatics Network.  The Network will lead and create opportunities to influence and shape the digital health agenda and the first output of the group will be a position statement and job description template for Chief Clinical Informaticians (CMIO CNIO CHIO CXIO). This will be circulated beyond the Network for public comment. READ MORE

System innovation, culture, people and change

The Innovating Health Series continued in Melbourne this week discussed the Culture of Innovation in Healthcare.  Simon Terry and Dr Vishaal Kishore guided a discussion with HISA's senior healthcare leaders network around system innovation, culture, people and behavioural change.  We discussed how to build a culture of innovation in healthcare organisations; how healthcare can do innovation brilliantly in times of crisis but then we return to 'business as usual' post-crisis when we should be taking the time to learn from what we did and implement change.

Highlights included:
  • seldom do we innovate alone - eco-systems, relationships and open collaboration matters;
  • not all players are in the same place and therefore don't think about innovation the same way - how do we bring into our thinking and workplace;
  • the appetite for innovation can be fostered and enhanced by building in time to think, reflect and plan - how can we create safe spaces to do this within a system that is built around 'doing'.
More updates from this session will be released in the coming weeks. The Innovating Health Series is run by HISA in partnership with Accenture.

Speakers, learning and networking as the HIC Reprise comes to Qld
Speakers at this week's HIC and Health Data Analytics Reprise included (from left) Michael Draheim, Susan Smith, Norm Good, Marlien Varnfield and Kevin Clark. Highlights and presentations from the national conferences were enjoyed at the Brisbane event.
HIC 2017 will be held in Brisbane 6-9 August.
