PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Dear Colleagues:
 As I end my term as president of the college, I would like to outline a few of the accomplishments of the last year that were made possible by the efforts and dedication of our Board of Directors, committee chairs and committee members, as well as input and activity from many of our Diplomates.
From a college recognition level:
- Achieved full recognition as a specialty college by the Veterinary Specialty Organizations Committee (formally known as American Board of Veterinary Specialties, ABVS)
- Resolved a long-running legal dispute regarding the use of the ACVSMR name and the creation of our organization that went to the level of consideration by the Supreme Court of the United States
- Won a trademark dispute with the US Patent Office over the ownership of the ACVSMR name
From a college planning perspective:
- Initiated the process for development of strategic planning for the college
- Went through the initial phase of revising and creation of a focused mission statement that appeals to the wide interests and activities of the college membership
- Conducted a college-wide survey regarding the feasibility of a stand-alone meeting
- Conducted a college-wide survey for comments on the proposed revised mission statement
- Developed standardized annual committee reports and the need for annual budgets from committees for board review and approval
- Moved from bi-monthly to monthly Board of Directors meetings to better serve the needs of the college and committee activities
From a college operation perspective:
- Hired a new Administrative Assistant for the college
- Elected a new secretary for the college
- Elected a new treasurer for the college
- Elected a new ABVS alternative representative for the college
For continuing education:
- Planned and delivered a successful day of education at the World Veterinary Rehabilitation Summit in Knoxville with financial support from generous donors and exhibitors at the symposium
- Revised and finalized a corporate sponsorship prospectus for funding continuing education
For examination content:
- Continued refinement and development of examination question creation and delivery
For residency training:
- Currently, over 90 residents in the traditional or alternative residency training programs with ongoing reviews of training logs and credentials for examination
For outreach:
- Revised and created a new college brochure for distribution to interested parties
- Re-activation of the ACVSMR site on Facebook
- Created an Instagram account for the college
- Recognition of the needs and plans for assisting the development of student organizations at veterinary medicine institutes
There are many other planned activities and items for continued development, such as updates and revisions to our Bylaws, that the Board and Committee chairs will be working on in the upcoming months. We will provide more of these details at this month's annual meeting on October 26 in Phoenix. Please stop by the Annual Business meeting if you are in town for the ACVS meeting or ACVSMR special session.
I want to thank you all for the opportunity to have served as president of the ACVSMR. As a college, we have cleared some major hurdles this year and I am very excited for the future of the college as we begin to implement more of our strategic aims over the course of the next few years.
We have great leadership across all committees and the Board. I encourage everyone to become involved in college activities as we continue our growth and recognition as a specialty college.

ACVSMR Business Meeting and Lunch
The ACVSMR Business Meeting will be held Friday, October 26, 2018, in Phoenix, Arizona, in conjunction with the ACVS Surgery Summit. The Membership Business Meeting will take place starting at 12:45 pm in room 228 A/B.
All ACVSMR diplomates and residents are welcome to attend. The ACVSMR education sessions will break for lunch at noon, and attendees are encouraged to visit the exhibit hall for a complimentary box lunch (voucher required) and return for the business meeting by 12:45 pm.

Call for Speakers: Colorado Veterinary Medical Association 2019 Convention
 The Colorado Veterinary Medical Association invites you to submit your session proposals for
CVMA Convention 2019, to be held September 12-15, 2019, in Keystone, Colorado. The program is designed to provide CE opportunities to veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and other professionals in the industry where information on critical and emerging issues in animal health and welfare can be presented and examined.
Education is designed into six tracks: Agricultural Animal, Beyond Medicine, Complementary Medicine, Equine, Exotics/Wildlife/Zoo Animal, and Small Animal.
The deadline to submit proposals is October 31, 2018.

Call for Abstracts
ACVSMR Annual Educational Meeting, hosted in conjunction with the ACVS Surgical Summit

ACVSMR is dedicated to fostering research in sports medicine and rehabilitation topics by once again providing you an opportunity to present the results of your work at our special session at the annual ACVS Symposium. Three (3) equine and 3 canine abstracts will be selected and a honoraria awarded to the winners.
Abstracts will be due January 31, 2019.

Dr. Hilary Clayton Awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons
 Congratulations to ACVSMR Diplomate Dr. Hilary Clayton who has been awarded a Fellowship of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in the UK. The award was made for meritorious contributions to knowledge and is the highest status of membership in the college.
The main objective of the new Fellowship is to advance veterinary standards by providing a resource of independent knowledge for the benefit of the veterinary profession.

Dr. Cynthia Otto Named Bustad Companion Animal Veterinarian of the Year
 Congratulations to ACVSMR Diplomate Dr. Cynthia Otto who has been named the 2018 Bustad Companion Animal Veterinarian of the Year. Dr. Otto is the founder and executive director of the Penn Vet Working Dog Center at the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Michael J. Topper, president of the AVMA, presented the award to Dr. Otto in July at the 2018 AVMA Convention in Denver.
"The commitment and passion Dr. Otto has shown in her day-to-day work that explores and supports relationships between working dogs and their owners shows how highly she values the connections that exist between people and the animals with which we share our planet," said Dr. Topper.
The Bustad Award is one of three American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Animal Welfare and Human Animal Bond Excellence Awards sponsored and funded by Merck Animal Health. It is presented to an AVMA member veterinarian in recognition of their outstanding work in preserving and protecting the human-animal bond.

Combined Diagnostic Imaging Internship and Residency Training Program in Equine Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado
- A combined 1-year diagnostic imaging internship and a 3-year residency in equine sports medicine and rehabilitation is being offered by the Department of Clinical Sciences at Colorado State University. The diagnostic imaging internship will focus on equine sports medicine issues and will include acquisition and interpretation of radiography, ultrasonography, nuclear scintigraphy, CT and MRI studies under direct supervision of a boarded veterinary radiologist. Successful completion of the internship is required for advancement into the residency training program. Initiation of the residency is dependent on finalization of funding. Help Build a Resource Library for Veterinary Students!
The public relations committee of ACVSMR is hoping to develop sports medicine and rehabilitation student clubs in veterinary schools. We are conducting a survey of all U.S. veterinary schools and are planning to establish contact with advisors of existing clubs. In addition, we will be reaching out to faculty at the remaining schools offering assistance in developing student clubs.
For our organization to be most beneficial to these student clubs, we are now requesting that ACVSMR diplomates help us to create a library of resource materials. These can include case reports (canine and equine), webinars, and videotapes of clinical conditions with diagnosis, etc. We will make these resources available to student club advisors for use in club meetings, crediting those who have supplied the resources.

Experienced Equine Associate Veterinarian, Sydney, Australia - Randwick Equine Centre,
Sydney's largest equine veterinary practice, is seeking an experienced sports horse veterinarian. The position will involve mostly sports horse ambulatory work, with some racetrack and pleasure horse work. The caseload includes a large number of dressage, eventing and show jumping clients and therefore the work has a strong lameness and diagnostic imaging bias. Ideally we would like another ACVSMR specialist to join the team but would also consider an experienced veterinarian with a keen interest in sports medicine and rehabilitation.
