The Impending Eviction Crisis

As restaurants and stores reopen, Chicagoans are eager to get closer to a life post-pandemic. But alongside this progress looms another crisis, a surge in evictions and subsequent homelessness as eviction moratoriums across the country are lifted. The individuals and families most at-risk of losing their housing are Africans Americans, a group already experiencing disproportionate levels of infection and economic stress because of the pandemic. Within this group single-mothers are specifically susceptible to eviction. At HOW, we know this statistic to be all too true with 77% of our family households being led by Black mothers.
HOW's work spans the entire housing continuum, beginning with homelessness prevention and ending as a housing and services provider. As such, we see the effects systemic and structural racism have played in creating disparities in eviction and housing. According to Professor Matthew Desmond, Founder of the
Eviction Lab
, it's impossible to "understand the eviction crisis without understanding the history of racism in America and the systematic dispossession of people of color, particularly African Americans."

On Sunday, June 7th over
110 HOW supporters
across the globe
took part in HOW's virtual 5K Plus! In addition to completing their chosen physical challenge, participants helped to crowdfund donations for HOW's Client Stabilization fund.

Healthy Moms Healthy Kids Findings Report
|
|
Healthy Moms Healthy Kids (HMHK) was an innovative cross-sector collaboration between HOW and the Chicago Department of Public Health designed to address health disparities experienced by pregnant and parenting African American women. Upon the program's conclusion, the Center for Urban Research and Learning released a report outlining the project's impact. According to the report, HMHK helped young mothers to develop a deeper understanding of health-related issues, gain better access to healthcare resources and information, reduce emergency room use, and more.

Essential Supplies Drive-Thru on July 18th!
|

While the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted all of us, HOW clients have experienced the economic, educational, and health hardships in acute ways. Unfortunately, many of our clients have also been hit hard by isolation, lost income, and difficulty in securing basic items. The shortages have lingered longer and the increased costs for cleaning supplies and food items have created a new level of need among those we serve.
To help fill this need,
HOW is hosting an Essential Supplies Drive-Thru on July 18th from 10AM to 3PM!
