WORD FROM THE PRESIDENT

"We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give." - Winston Churchill

The Greater D/FW Chapter's fifth and final goal for 2017 is to continue mentoring students. And, we have a couple of ways we are working to achieve that goal.

The first is working with our student chapter at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA). A panel discussion was conducted in early May at UTA, which allowed our members to talk about WTS and how it has helped our careers. Students were encouraged to ask questions and following the discussion, students had one-on-one discussions with members. The July monthly program was held on the UTA campus and members of the student chapter are always welcome to join other programs we present.

Another way our chapter fosters interest in transportation planning and engineering is through Transportation YOU -- a hands-on, interactive, mentoring program that offers young girls, ages 13 to 18, an introduction to a wide variety of transportation-related careers. This year, the Greater D/FW Chapter offered these students a visit to Southwest Airlines and a tour of the maintenance hangar, as well as a visit to DFW International Airport. Students were also participated in a day-long Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) event at UTA.

Though it might be a stretch to consider our scholarship program a mentoring activity, I think it's appropriate to mention our scholarship success. Since forming our chapter in the early 1980s, the Greater D/FW Chapter has awarded more than $100,000 in scholarships to young women.

All-in-all, I think our chapter excels at helping young women see their potential and we will continue to do more to support these future leaders.

CORPORATE SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT

When infrastructure is involved, connections are vital-connections between the built and natural environments; private and public interests; urban, suburban, and rural settings; planners, scientists, surveyors, and engineers; management and project teams; speed and accuracy; time and money. Infrastructure makes community, that backbone of modern life, possible.  BGE, Brown & Gay Engineers designs infrastructure and all of its connections. BGE's highly connected culture is the context in which they think, work, and serve others. It's also the basis for the results they achieve. And it is these results on which their clients judge BGE-and have for nearly a half-century.
