Board Loosens Halloween Restrictions

In response to elementary school students' advocacy (including writing to the superintendent, creating a petition, and speaking at Board of Education meetings), trustees this week directed staff to loosen prohibitions on Halloween activities at AUSD schools. You can read the full story here

New Partnership with Mills College

We are excited to announce that AUSD and the College of Alameda are building potential new partnership opportunities with Mills College as they work towards increased college access and affordability for local students. You can learn more about Mills College and our emerging  partnership by attending the "Experience Mills Open House" on October 20th.

For more information and to RSVP, visit:  www.mills.edu/visitprograms.

Special Event: "Reducing Food Waste"

On October 17, Community Action for a Sustainable Alameda will screen "Just Eat It," an award-winning documentary that examines the devastating consequences of food waste around the world. The event will be held at the Elks Lodge and begins with a book-signing and reception at 5:30. The film will be shown at 6:30 and will be followed by a panel discussion. General admiss ion is $25 for adults. Teachers and students can attend for free.

More information on the event is available here.

Earthquake Preparation Tips

Schools across AUSD will hold earthquake drills on October 18 in honor of the Great America Shakeout. This is an excellent time of year to check your at-home earthquake supplies, too! Last year, AUSD and the City of Alameda partnered to create an 8-week, step-by-step guide to getting your disaster supply kit ready. You can find it here!
Asian Pacific Islander Round Table

Alameda's Asian Pacific Islander Round Table  has been created to advise the District on educational issues that impact Asian Pacific Islander students, families, and staff in AUSD.  The API Round Table hopes to have diverse membership that reflects Alameda's community and includes representatives from the student population, families served by the District, District staff ,  and the broader Alameda community.  The API Round Table plans on meeting once per month, with additional meetings as needed.  If you are interested in joining the District's API Round Table, please come to this year's first meeting!
