I Didn't
Know That!

Here are some great fun facts about various places in the world.

Enjoy!

~~~~~~
Did you know that
croissants aren't French and that Danish pastries aren't from Denmark?
They both originated in Austria!
~~~~~~

The 'Plain of Jars' is located in Laos where thousands of enormous jars believed to be 2000 years old, sit in empty fields.

Each jar is big enough to hold a person in it, and while some experts believe that the jars were used in burial rituals, the main purpose of these jars still remains a mystery.

~~~~~~
Most people think the Panama hat was named after the country of Panama.
The straw hats actually came from Ecuador in South America and were shipped to the US through the Panama Canal.
~~~~~~

Portland, Oregon, in
the USA boasts the smallest park in the world!

Measuring in at 24 inches only, the Mills End Park can hold only one visitor at a time.

~~~~~~
Did you think that New Zealand was the largest Kiwi producing country in the world?
Nope - That honour goes to Italy!
~~~~~~

Did you know that
beer was banned in Iceland for a good 74 years and was lifted only on March 1, 1989?

Beer day is now celebrated on March 1 and bars celebrate this day by serving the best of Icelandic beers.

Aptly, the next day, March 2, has officially been declared as the National Hangover Day!

~~~~~~
Albert Einstein was
offered the presidency of Israel in the year 1952, when he was 73 years old.
However, he declined the invitation.
~~~~~~

The Golden Gate
Bridge in San Francisco is being painted almost constantly.

It's so big that by the time the painters get from one end to the other, it's time to start again!

~~~~~~
In South Korea be sure
to never use a red ink pen to write your name with, as they consider it a sign of death.
~~~~~~

Less that 1% of the
world's population has ever ventured to Antarctica.

Travel Tips

More and more cruise ships leave from "drive-up ports," which save you money on airfare but can cost you in parking.

Plan on arriving the day before your departure - always a good idea in case you're delayed, because the ships won't wait for you - and spend one night at a hotel that lets you park your car in its lot free for the duration of your trip.

This is a common deal in port cities, more so in a tight economy.

And if the hotel doesn't offer it as a published deal, ask.

~~~~~~
When you're asking around for sightseeing or dining advice, avoid hotel staffers.
They're often on the take. (In fact, many hotels license out their concierge operations to companies that get commissions on bookings for certain attractions and restaurants.)
Instead, find establishments - shops, cafés, restaurants, galleries - that match your taste, and ask the folks there.
~~~~~~

Always visit the local tourism office.

They know about everything going on in town.

They can point you to free activities, special events happening during your stay, and everything in between.

~~~~~~
Lunchtime is the best time to visit historical sites.
The sites empty out and you'll have fewer crowds to fight.
~~~~~~

Pack a flashlight.

It will let you see at night, help you avoid stepping on stuff, and help you tell ghost stories.

Like duct tape and toilet paper, this is one of those items that it's better to have and not need, than need and not have!

~~~~~~
Get city attraction cards.
If you are going to visit a lot of museums and other attractions in a short period of time, a city pass is going to save you money on admission (plus most provide free public transportation too!).
~~~~~~

Back up your photos - or better yet, leave them at home.

If your camera is lost or stolen, you don't want to lose all the pictures you took on your trip - along with all the photos you've taken in the last few years!

Start each trip with an empty camera card, just to be on the safe side.

~~~~~~
Save money by eating at expensive restaurants during lunch.
They offer lunch specials - same food as dinner but half the price.
~~~~~~

 Send postcards!

I guarantee you there has never been anyone who doesn't like to receive a postcard.

After all, how often do we get real mail anymore?

If you have children or grandchildren, it will absolutely make their day to receive something in the mail from you.

I even send postcards to myself, so I can relive my trip once I get home, as invariably, I beat the postcard back.

Watch Out
For These Scams

The Newspaper Attack

Rome

How it works:

A group of gypsy children surrounds you, waving newspapers in your face.

The papers are merely to confuse you and block your view as the youths reach into your pocket and grab your bag-or anything else they can get their hands on.

What you can do:

Firmly brush past them and move away quickly-and shout for help if you need it.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Zigzag
Bangkok
How it works:
This crime involves a traveler who is arrested for handling merchandise in the airport duty-free shop.
Once in custody, the victim is introduced to a middleman who says he can gain the traveler's freedom-for a fee.
The police, in on the deal, split the payment.
What you can do:
Don't touch items in duty-free shops unless you intend to buy them.
  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The Fake Art Show

How it works:

Young and convincing "art students" befriend you on the street and persuade you to visit their school's gallery, where you find yourself getting a high-pressure sales pitch to buy overpriced, third-rate work being passed off as art.

What you can do:

Steer clear of anyone in China inviting you to an art show.

Tales from the Road

Mt. Nemrut - A Step Back in Time

In 2008, my Wonderful Husband and I went on a trip to Turkey.

It was absolutely incredible!

We saw Istanbul (once known as Constantinople) - along with the Spice Market, the Grand Bazaar, the Blue Mosque and Topkapi Palace.

We saw Pamukkale - we walked up the limestone "mountain" and swam in the pool at the top.  The pool was fed by a thermal hot springs.  The water in the pool was carbonated, so it was like swimming in a giant bottle of fizzy water!

We saw Ephesus - an amazing historical site full of history and archeological wonders.

We saw Cappadocia (we even stayed in a cave hotel there) - we got the chance to go on an early morning hot air balloon ride that was unbelievable.

We even sailed on a Gullet Boat for a week - exploring, and swimming in, the Mediterranean Sea.

So, with all those experiences, you can see why Turkey was such a fascinating, unforgettable trip.

Now, even if you've never been to Turkey, I'll bet you've heard of most of those places, right?

And, if you have ever been to Turkey, I'll bet you, too, have visited most of those places, right?

But there was one place in Turkey I had never even heard of.

Have you ever heard of Mt. Nemrut?

Located in south-east Turkey, Mt. Nemrut - the 8th wonder of the world - is a magnificent ancient site rumored to hold the tomb of King Antiochus.

Of course, I didn't know anything about Mt. Nemrut or King Antiochus when my Husband brought up the idea of visiting the site.

He had been talking to some people while we were touring Cappadocia, and apparently he was told that we really should check the spot out.

Well, that's pretty much all he need to hear.

Mt. Nemrut - here we come!

Tilley Radar Cap

Here's something else to keep you nice and warm so you don't catch a cold!

If you have to go outside, you know you have to bundle up.

The Radar Cap is one of the warmest hats out there, and it's perfect for our winter weather.

I got one for Christmas last year and I absolutely love it!

I walk my dogs almost every day -  and as anyone with dogs can tell you - they don't care how cold it is, they still want to go for their walks.

I promise you, this hat keeps me toasty warm, no matter how cold it is outside.

And, because it's a knit cap, if it gets too warm, I just take it off and shove it in my pocket.

It's made from a soft and stretchy (and naturally wicking) Merino wool, and has a double layer around the forehead and ears.  This means the sides can be turned up or worn down.

If you, or someone you know, has to be outside on a regular basis during this cold weather, the Radar Cap is for you (and your friend)!

Colours:   Black and Charcoal

Price:   $65.00
