Series:   "Belonging"

Sermon :   "The Puzzle
That Is Our Soul"

Scripture :  Psalm 139:1-18, and 23-24

This Sunday
This Sunday, in response to the jigsaw puzzle of last week, I would like to take some time to examine the jigsaw pieces that are our lives.  Instead of focusing on the world outside of us, I would like to instead, focus briefly on the world inside of us.  A few years back I did a study of the soul.  I wanted to find out what it was, how it functioned, if it was real, if it changed over time, and how our perceptions of it played out.   I came away with the theory that we each contain this God-shaped "void" within us.  It is as individualized as our appearance.  No soul is the same, not one.  Our souls help define who we are, how we respond to others, and how we see ourselves.  Our souls either strengthen us and our convictions, or weaken us, particularly if we pay no attention to the care of the soul.   Jesus is the example of what quality soul work can look like.  He took risks; sometimes intense risks.  He would be the first to admit that his willingness and his ability to do what he did was based on his relationship, his trust, his time with, and understanding of God.   At the same time, he seemed to know that even that depended on him doing whatever was necessary to keep his own soul healthy, alive, and whole.  He was centered on God; God's teaching, God's healing, God's accountability, and God's transformational power; a power that was flowing through him; through his soul.  Doing any of that meant spending time with God, being challenged, renewed, even reinvigorated by his Creator.  Bottom line is that it is up to us whether we do the same.  Like our physical health, our soul or spiritual health depends on any number of actions taken on our part.   So, why explore this now?  As we continue to walk through what it means to be a place of belonging, our individual souls will play a huge part as together we work our way through this year.   My hope his Sunday is to focus on a few of the soul-based exercises and activities that will help us be spiritually healthy and vibrant.   To prepare, please read Psalm 139,  and write about what you felt as you read it.

MINISTRY NEWS
The Way Forward Info Evening
Monday, October 22
Have you heard about a special General Conference in February and been unsure what it meant? Do you know what the bishops are recommending for how the structure of the United Methodist Church may change as a result of the General Conference? Are you curious what it will mean for Aldersgate? Come to church on Monday October 22 at 7:00pm and learn more. Members of the CRC committee have gathered information from the conference and the UM news service and distilled it into a few handouts and slides. The evening will have time to listen, respond, and question together. We will end the evening with a short prayer time for the church and the denomination and our siblings and family members in Christ throughout the world.
A Message From Melinda Lilley
Finance Update & Budget
There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens. Ecclesiastes 3:1
For me, this verse describes the transition not only from Summer to Autumn but the various transitions that are happening with our church finances.

First of all, we welcome Jill Swanson as our new Treasurer and we thank Marie Vieth for her years of service. Jill is also the Treasurer for the Aldersgate Christian PreSchool. She can be reached at

Second, Melinda Lilley is moving out of the Finance Chair position into a Communications role. Jim Phillips has graciously accepted the finance team leadership role. He can be reached at

Third, the Aldersgate July 2018-June 2019 Fiscal Budget that was approved by the Core Leadership Team is now available to view. Please click here to download or ask for a copy from Wendi in the office.  We went from a previous fiscal budget of $511,547.05 to the current fiscal budget of $463,613.21 (about $50,000 less). Needless to say, we were forced to cut some maintenance and other needed services in order to achieve a balanced budget. If you have any questions, please contact: [email protected].
A quarterly update with the status of our income and expenses will be available shortly. Your continued faithful giving is appreciated.

Finally, I'd like to thank the members of the Finance Team that I've had the pleasure of working with over the last years, especially Jim Phillips, Darrell Lowe, Brad Brewer, and Gary Swearingen. Thank you for serving our community.

Yours in Faith, Love, Health and Service,
Melinda
All Saints Sunday
November 4
On Sunday, November 4 at both services we will remember and honor all the people we have loved and released to God through death in the hope of new life. We invite you who have lost loved ones since last All Saints' Sunday (November 5, 2017) to fill out the Sunday attendance form now with your loved one's name and relationship to you. These names will be spoken, a candle lit for each one, we will give thanks for them, and pray for us all as we continue to work through our grief and seek renewed confidence and peace in the promises of Christ Jesus. The deadline to submit names is Sunday, October 28 .
Cluster Conference
November 4
There will be a Cluster Conference on Sunday, November 4 starting at 7:00pm at First United Methodist Church of Bellevue. Presided over by our District Superintendent, Rev. Rich Lang, this is a communal event with other Methodist churches in our area to gather the laity  to have civil, open, serious conversation about the mission of the UMC. Everyone is invited to attend.  Using a Table Talk format, there will be three movements to this Cluster Conference.
a.)     Setting the table with a teaching about stages of faith.
b.)    Opening the table with a Bible study about the content of Jesus' teachings.
c.)   The main course being conversation about The Way Forward and the future of our District (mission field).
Calling Crafters/Artists
As you exercise your creative side this fall, please consider making additional hand-crafted items or art work to donate to the United Methodist Women for their annual bake/craft sale, December 8-9 . All proceeds will be used for church and missions. Sign-up sheets will come out mid-November. For more info, please contact Clarine Goodleaf ( [email protected] or 425-643-9339).
Mod Fundraiser
Thank you to everyone who came out to support the youth by dining at Mod Pizza last week. It was awesome to see the Aldersgate family out in full force all throughout the day! We are excited to announce that we raised $290.62. We were also graciously given an additional $33 from those who couldn't make it to Mod for a total of $323.62. A BIG Thank you from Aldersgate's Youth!
S lide Help Needed
Moving in to the fall, Pastor Laura would like to work with a few other people on designing and organizing the slides for first service worship. The process usually only takes 1-2 hours a week and is a lot of fun for creative, technology-oriented people. Please contact Pastor Laura if you are interested, willing to learn the process, and can help as part of a team with this important work for the church.

Injuries often can be repaired if the victim does not bleed out.

There are two days left to build; TODAY Thursday, October 11 and also  Saturday October 13 .  The work these past two weeks concentrated on exterior insulation, exterior wrap and siding. The 10 houses are well on their way to being weather tight for the fall and to be completed in the spring. Thanks to all who worked at the site and to those who contributed to the cost of the project. There will be an Interfaith service at the Sammamish site at 4:00pm on Sunday October 14 . Come and see the progress.    If you are interested c ontact Darrell Lowe for more information.

This is also the time to help Habitat financially.  The houses are sold at cost the those in need.  Our contributions allow Habitat to find new land and to start new homes.  Mark your contributions for Habitat and place them in the offering plate.
